Yeah, I feel bad for Ginger. I don't have live TV but I sometimes stream into GMA on Hulu and they always cut the weather forecast segment, which I never understood, you hardly see her (or whomever does the weather). You realize how much her role was cut through the years, I remember when Sam Champion had a prominent role when he was on the show and he would do segments that didn't have to deal with weather.

Michael's addition cut into the amount of leftover fluff segments for the meteorologist to pick up.

With Amy (when she was there) and Lara around to to handle the lifestyle pieces, then Robin, George and Michael all in the role of primary anchors, there's little besides the weather left for Ginger.

Exactly what is the brandng? WCCO News, CBS News Minnesota, WCCO News on CBS Minnesota? Go the KYW route and simplify it. "4" in the black box, "CBS News Minnesota" in the blue box. Maybe WCCO is like KCAL or PIX where the call sign is famously known otherwise referencing them isn't necessary.

I'm confused by that KYW look. Why bring back a throwback logo that few people probably remember? It seems counterproductive to what I thought was CBS's ultimate goal of unifying all the stations' branding and eventually de-emphasizing channel numbers. Yes, I know they want to have local elements in there too, but this just feels like it's going in the opposite direction.

Also, why let stations pick their own colors? The whole point of standardizing graphics equipment on Chyron Axis is that you can roll out different animations and monitor graphics for all kinds of news topics really quickly to all the stations. Other station groups have done this for years. Stations like KYW and KDKA with one-off looks are going to perpetually have a mismatched look or will not be able to benefit from the resources of hubbed graphics.

Fair points. IMO channel numbers should referenced in some way so people can quickly find the station on their tv. Most people probably say Channel 3 anyway instead of CBS Philly or KWY.

According to the Nielsen website (CLICK HERE), the majority of us Americans are streaming MORE than watching OTA and Cable TV.

Most people aren't coming home to watch the local newscasts on TV. People get their news online. Gone are the days of local newscasts at convenient viewing times.

How are local stations getting with the times? I tried finding local stations to stream live on my ROKU TV but no luck there.

I do know that Paramount+ not only lets me stream CBS shows, but there's a way to watch my local CBS affiliate LIVE with commercials with my subscription. On the Peacock streaming service, I discovered that for $10 more a month, I could stream my local NBC affiliate LIVE.

    Viewing trends.jpeg

I'm surprised cable still beats broadcast viewership. The main reason I can assume is that cable (and satellite barring severe weather) gurantees a clear signal. OTA digital channels glitch and sometimes are temporarily unavalible due to poorer signal and antenna brands.

  4. This video explains the concept of "channel drift" really well, a topic we've heavily discussed.

I recall Flavor of Love, I Love New York, Keeping up with the Kardashians and Rev Run's House really signaled the programing shift in the mid 2000s for me. At least Game Show Network, Food Network and HGTV have largely retained their niche.

Word is they we’re looking for something ‘distinctive’ and after playing around with 2-3 different colors.. settled on green. They wanted to get away from using blue (arguably the most popular color currently used) and red is, of course, synonymous with breaking news.

While they may not admit it, I think , subconsciously, they were likely leaning toward green to play off the Eagles colors from the beginning. I do wonder what other colors they were considering.

I hope design packages embrace black, browns, yellows and purples more instead of the general blue and white, breaking red, and morning orange looks. Not CBS but Nightly News woth Tom Brokaw used brown and purple effectively in the early 00s.

  6. Green is a rare color for stations but KYW pulls it off well. Loving the Philadelphia Eagles shade of green. The new CBS package in't all that great, but touches of uniqueness like these is what adds flare and authenciticty.

Nice to see they're both getting new shows. I think it will be weirder to me not seeing Marilyn on the People's Court. I'll miss so much of the elements People's Court had, such as the music, the iconic logo, the typewriter and gavel sound effects, and Curt Chaplin's deadpan introductions. Now I'm waiting to see if Byron brings back judges Joe Brown, Alex Ferrer or Lynn Toler back to Daytime TV. I just feel Byron's new shows won't be the same compared to WB's longrunners.

On an episode of Allen's Judge Mablean Show, many youtube users commented the plot was very similar to "The Imitation of Life" movie.

And management where I work definitely frowned upon being friendly with people from the other stations socially.

All things that didn't happen in any other market I worked in. Healthy competition? Yes. But respect and understanding the biggest difference we all had with the people working at the other stations was the name of the company on our direct deposit.

What a shame. There's a saying that goes "don't go too hard on the competition, you never know if you might end up working for them".

The scripted part is what kills Allen's court shows. Is there not a production company out there willing to do a real cases?

I'm surprised it took this long for Waterman to sell after Bernie Waterman's death several years ago. It is great to see Hearst buying. It will be interesting to see how it shifts the culture of the market, which as someone who worked there for a few years, is beyond toxic competitively. And all the stations have toxic internal cultures too.

Now we wait and see if the McBrides realize now is the time to cash out WINK.

Asked this in the Sinclair Chat. With the concentration of local ownership between a few companies, if a talent falls out with management at one station (and either quits or gets terminated), does that blacklist them from working in the station group totally?

I read the report and now I’m more confused and concerned as to why was this allowed to go on for so long unchecked. There’s been a few time his ratings were subpar so why not get rid of him then? This seems like a set up to an ouster.

Once again broadcast news proves itself to be a hotbed of inflated egos and back biting. Sucks.

Never been a fan of Lemon's. This confirms things.

  12. I was surprised that unlike MSNBC, CNN broke away from Trump's Florida departure to cover other stories. MSNBC temporarily did so just for the southern tornadoes.

It's hard to think of recent time where MSNBC has covered something non-Trump/politics related with the exception of severe weather.

  13. Don't know where to pose this question but I'll ask it here.

With the concentration of local station ownership by just a few companies, what happens if a talent has a falling out at one station? Does it now blacklist them from all other stations in th group, or do individual station managers have the disgression if hiring someone ousted from another station?

Overall, is this media oligapathy, so to speak, good for the local news industry?

  14. Multiple outlets (Radar, OK Magazine, Rickey Smiley Morning Show---take what you will from their legitimacy) are reporting that Gayle King will sign a $12 Million deal with CNN. This would make her the highest paid talent at the network.

Congrats to Gayle! As for CNN, is she and Charles Barclay really the answer to the network's problem?

Maybe they’re preparing for Gayle’s eventual defection to CNN?

I doubt it but if so Vlad is not the answer. They'd need a well known perhaps older female talent to go up against Hoda and Robin.

Vlad seems like a nice guy, good for him.

This reminds me of when CTM tried to add a fourth person with Bianna Golodryga. This might work as Vlad would be heavily involved in the program doing features more so than the actual fourth host. It does seem like CBS Mornings/CTM is rather unsettled however.

According to this video, they still used the Enforcer cut as a close:

Even in the last package they were using their early 2010s enforcer theme as the close.

Agreed, the new theme is bland and forgettable.

The orange looks good. They maybe just need to blend in another color so it doesn't look overwhelming.

  18. What is it about network news that so many of these personal scandals occur? Perhaps these workplace scandals happen in all industries but network scandals are magnified because they're on television? Whatever it is, this must make aspiring journalists be cautious of entering the profession.

On another note, I believe Ojinika Obiekwe is out as entertainment reporter (her bio is no longer on the website). I believe Dan and Hazel have been handling entertainment reports. Marysol or Ben would probably be the best replacement?

The set and graphics look great. The L3s however are terrible.

Alot of unknown faces at WPIX from that video.

Oji was great, she had personality.

With that, Doug and Danielle might be the last surviving true veterans of News12.

I also found this part interesting. I'm guessing this clause wasn't in place for the people who were let go earlier (Eileen Lehpamer wound up a PIX pretty quickly after):

Are News 12 anchors that well known to require a non compete clause?

I find those strange. We want you out because we dont want to pay you a certain amount, but we also don't want you working anywhere else.

What a shame for viewers to hear that Doug and Danielle are out.

Even though News 12 often felt like a cheaper version of the city stations, it was nice getting local news from people who know the island and you've trusted for decades. But with more and more veterans leaving, and the station apparently covering more city and national news, there's less of a reason to watch, unfortunately. Still plenty of good people in front of and behind the camera (and the new people may be fine as well!) but it's feeling much less familiar.

Agreed. NYC is a saturated media market. The entire appeal of News 12 was hyperlocal focus on overlooked areas in a massive media market. Now that News 12 has lost it's defining trait, the only reason to watch is a quick news update at anyhour.

Will the network evening newscast expand to 1 hour on a regular basis?  I don't believe they will in the near future because they're investing in other news programs for their online and streaming news sites.

Maybe in a few years when the networks are in desperate need of more programming, they will put 1 hour editions of the evening news.

if that were to happen, it would be cool if the first half hour focused on domestic events and the second half hour focused on global events.

Why not air classic shows on certain nights of the week with old shows and movies that they have?  They should do this on Friday and Saturday nights.  Then put more recent shows that have been off the air, put them at 10pm if needed.

NBC should make all the films and TV shows that are part of their studios available on peacocktv.

I used to wonder why networks don't do this during off seasons.

The question with classics is, how will they hold up in the ratings against new episodes on other networks. That's why I think the elimination of 10pm might have to be on all three networks for it to work.
