  1. What a shame. I wonder if they will be able to come back from this.

They are both good anchors but their future is now in cable news only at least for several years since the broadcast networks will not touch them. I wonder if their buyout of their contract will still have a non complete clause for a year or so. Amy should have stayed with NBC News Group.

I really think Amy would have been a solid successor to Ann Curry had she reamined at NBC.

  2. Starting at (10:04) BET, MTV, VH 1 Coverage of 9/11 via CBS

BET Tonight (non CBS) coverage of 9/11

NBC News OJ Verdit Coverage featuring Tom Brokaw in Studio 1A. Looks like they had an alterante backdrop with the blue background saying "NBC News" instead of "Today".

  3. I know that the point is to de-emphasize channel numbers because people are watching on multiple platforms.

Is it safe to assume however, that television is still the dominant way people consume local news? If so, there should be at least some reference to channel numbers so people know where to find the station. One way might be to include the station's channel number along with the call letters that are usually placed below the station's logo.

    Example:     CBS News Los Angeles

                          KCBS-TV | Channel 2

This might be especially useful for higher up double digit channel numbers like WWJ 62 in Detroit. Someone without cable may not know what dial CBS is and might not take the time to flip as far up as 62 on their OTA television.

The new set is very beautiful and spacious! I’m glad KTLA is not following some other Nexstar stations and it’s in market #2 so expectations are high.

Ironic as Nextar (or what used to be Nextar's) station in the #1 market --WPIX-- looks sub par.

I like the logo.  It's unique and perfect for an app icon.  And I assume that's what they were going for.

I’m gonna disagree here, I actually like it. Granted, the graphics definitely have that “in house, small market” quality that I can’t quite put a finger on, and there are better ways to do minimalism, but for a station in freakin Northern Michigan, this is great. I’d prefer it if my local station used something like these graphics instead of the Frankenstein’s monster of a package that WISH-TV is using now.

Not everything has to have a bunch of glossy, flying 3D BS distracting you from everything. Those looks are far too common these days (looking at you, Nexstar and Gray). It seems like a lot of designers are stuck in that late 90s to early 2010s period of design, and it’s good to see a station break the mold.

The graphics aren't top of the shelf but --- considering the market ranking -- it's pretty decent looking by YouTube channel/mobile standards. At least 9&10 went for a good online look rather than a crappy attempt at TV level graphics. This looks neater than alot of super-small market aesthetics I've seen. The logo isn't bad either. It's minimalist but it creatively combines numbers for a multi-frequency tv station. It's more creative than Long Island's WLNY 10/55 fraction bar logo.

  6. Don't know if this was reported already but Mark Traub the male voice heard laughing in the background on "Today" died last month. RIP, been hearing that voice for years and never thought to look up who it could be.

Well Linsey Davis could be a good successor, to Robin's seat. But that if Roberts decide to throw in the towel.

TJ and Amy looked like the likely successors...but not now.

  8. https://thehill.com/homenews/media/3816899-cnn-considers-prime-time-comic-host-as-gutfeld-thrives-on-fox/

According to The Hill, CNN is considering a late night comic like Trevor Noah or Bill Mahr, given Fox News' Gutfeld's sucess in the ratings against Colbert, Kimmel, and Fallon.

I don't think CNN gets that Gutfeld isn't doing well because of comedy. Many critics say his show isn't funny at all (may be some political bias there). Gutfeld is doing well because his show offers a perspective other than the same streamline pov on Kimmel, Trevor Noah, Colbert and and a host of other political comedy shows. Is funny news the answer to CNN's primetime problem? Probably not. More of the same opinions is the issue.

The unfortunate causalty is that Jimmy Fallon who is the least political of the bunch has taken a hit in the ratings.

  9. Wow! First Pete Williams now Kerry Sanders, not to mention Chuck Henry at KNBC and other vets retiring from NBC. For years I knew Kerry as the Florida guy! Wishing him the best.

I wonder if Andrea Mitchell will call it quits next, and many have asked about WNBC's Churck Scarborough. Hopefully they dont.

The Daily Mail is reporting that TJ Holmes also had an affair with an intern. Their source describes Holmes as “a predator who took full advantage of his position”

One should proceed with caution considering the source, but if it’s true, this can’t be good.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11649639/T-J-Holmes-sex-office-ABC-intern-13-years-junior.html

NY Post is reporting this as well. Happening just as we predicted.  It may only be a matter of time before harassment allegations surface. At this point, I don't see ABC bringing TJ back.

I am not TJ and Amy's personal attorneys so heopefuly it doesn't come off that way lol. Again, still bad that he repetedly cheated on his wife, no sympathy points for that, and that he s*at where he ate jeapordizing a job many would dream of having, not smart. BUT the source's description indicated the affair was consensual (despite calling Holmes a preditor). Both parties are accountable.

The headline makes a point of saying the intern was 24, which is old enough to make your own decisions. TJ aside, I notice we're infantalizing 21+ year olds alot these days. I'm sure their stunted independece (living at home, having children & marrying later due to the economy) plays a big role this growing image. 24 isn't as smart as you'll ever be, but it's certainly agebale enough to decide wether or not you want to sleep with a married co-worker, mentor, superior or whatever position.

  11. I did definitely notice a shift to more serious content towards the end.

Sometimes Katie came off a bit snotty like when she told Britney Spears "I told you to stop calling me ma'am" or the Ann Coulter interview. It also seemed like sometimes Katie let her political bias is bleed into her interviewing.

Maybe it was because Diane had a long career before the morning time which allowed people to accept her in an evening role?

  12. I'm assuming the justification for this is to force people to watch local newscasts live on TV?

If they counted the streaming numbers, wouldn't that not make a difference? Plus, being online opens up your viewing audience to anyone anywhere in the country, such as residents who out of their market but looking to see what's going on back home.

  13. Katie Couric's book has been out for a while now and I just got around to reading the chapters about her time at CBS (which she didn't enjoy). Aside from citing sexism, she seems pretty dumbfounded about what exactly went wrong during her tenure. I think it was the shift to softer news and the Katie's Notebook/Talk Back op-ed segments for starters. Largely, it was the belief that her popularity in the mornings would translate to the evenings. Thoughts?

Comparibly, I don't recall Diane Sawyer's nightly run being as criticized though.

That point there I was thinking about. If the image was projected to be a bit more like Morning Joe or even Good Morning Football where it was more of a comradery than a "family", I feel the impact of the fallout would be less severe.

I see your point, especially because Joe and Mika are doing well after their mini scandal.  To be fair, 'Frozen' sing-along 'Deals and Steals' GMA is not a serious news cast. GMA3 even less serious.  ABC News is fighting to protray an internalized image of Good Morning America that isn't in line with reality.

Two adult coworkers began a relationship after separating from their spouses.  It became publicized after a tabloid sent a photographer to spy on them. What lack of judgement? That they wanted their private life to remain private for the time being? Yes, let’s punish them for that.

Agreed. We live in a time of increased public scrutiny. These days, companies knee-jerk reaction is cave ito public pressure, forgetting that this is an era of short attention spans. A new media frenzy surfaces every week.

It also seems like people who double down and stay the course, rather than retreat, are the ones who survive cancel culture. Translation, ABC should've kept them on the air and allowed this to blow over.

Are they still building the new studio?

I was fortunate enough to visit LA a few weeks ago and I was able to witness KTLA's local coverage. They just debuted a great looking studio and they seem to have a better designed look to their graphics. KTLA's use of the graphics package makes WPIX's look second rate and not worthy of the number one market.

WPIX (and WABC) have the aesthetics of a lesser market. At least in WABC's case it's always been that way hasn't ever affected its popularity. West coats stations like KTLA, KABC and sonmewhat KNBC continue to beat NY set wise.

  16. Going back to news, another issue I see is everything feels contrived. Local or national, tv news outlets appear to be going extra hard to seem like they care about the viewer or are invested in the comminity. Be it through excessive hours of news programming, overly dramatic weather coverage, ornate graphics, or gimmiks, it feels forced.

I watched an Australian newscast from the 90s and it struck me how raw, no nonsence and simply news oriented foreign broadcasters like the BBC and SBS were, without being boring. Even the "feel good" story at the end about a man duplicating his grandfather's flight across the English channel comes off as a magazine piece rather than cheesy or selling false hope.

Even now, foreign countries like Jamaica with a lot smaller production values deliver a much more straight newscast than what we get in the states today.

    Some interesting changes...

So after reading the press release the new schedule will be:

    5AM-6AM: Early Start (NYC)

    6AM-9AM: CNN This Morning (NYC)

9AM-12N: New 3 hour show co-anchored by John Berman, Kate Bolduan and Sara Sidner (NYC)

    12N: Inside Politics (WDC)

1PM-4PM: New 3 hour show co-anchored by Brianna Keilar, Boris Sanchez and Jim Sciutto (WDC)

    4PM-9PM remains unchanged

The 9PM hour still doesn't have a permeant host.

    10PM: Alisyn Camerota (NYC)

    11PM: Laura Coates (WDC)

Victor Blackwell will return to Atlanta for This Morning Weekend, Pamela Brown leaves her weekend show (new chief investigative corespondent), so Jim Acosta will expand til 7 on Saturdays and 8 on Sundays, I'm interested to see what programing they put on after that, obviously too early to end coverage, maybe CNN International?

I'm curious as to why CNN thinks they need 3 co-anchors and 3 hour blocks during the day, I'm glad they didn't go the MSNBC route of a new anchor every hour but it seems overdone. The changes will roll out over the next few months but are expected to be done by the end of Q1, I wonder if the newsroom set has been taken off the air for these changes and not CNN This Morning like many thought.

Anyone else think Licht could launch new graphics with these changes? The current look is almost 9 years old and works fine but since he's changing everything else...

Wow, no more "CNN Newsroom" on the weekdays presumably, and nothing on this list originating from Atlanta.

WSVN, please... this is better than 7News....

It compares to WSVN in terms of newsroom set. The camera movement definitely  tops 7 News. As for newscast content, I'd need to sit and watch more indepth for comparison. I do like the bits witt in the news writing that I've seen though. Again CNN should definately take a page from City TV.

Keep in   mind the newsroom wander was perfected at CITY-TV CityNews/CityPulse Toronto...starting in the early mid 80s

LOVING the camera movement in the '99 and '95 broadcasts. Getting a very WSVN feel from those tapes. CNN take notes.
