  1. I didn't think of that possibility, but you might be right on that.
  2. Yeah I wish KOZL still carried live newscasts during the week. But I'm just glad they still have one on the weekends.
  3. Now that's interesting. I wonder why they don't just simulcast KRBK's newscast live. But it might be they don't want KRBK's ratings getting diluted.
  4. I believe they only do that on the weekends. KRBK 9:00 newscasts are run on weekdays only, I think.
  5. Some shocking news from the KOLR10 studios. A van drove through their security gate and starting speaking some weird unintelligible stuff. They were arrested. Damaged some vehicles and a satellite dish at the station. Literally just saw this and thought it was important enough to share. (The story only takes up the first 1:45 or so of this video.) Hopefully they get the help they need.
  6. So it's becoming increasingly likely that this will be a mass rollout to Scripps stations, especially because they wouldn't issue a style guide unless they had plans beyond WTXL for this package. Of course, we'll have to see what happens to certain stations...namely the former Journal stations like KGUN. It's going to be interesting to see if stations like KSBY adopts the WTXL gfx package. Honestly, I think KSBY looks and sounds much better with what they have right now. KSBY has used "Tower" for many years, and I'm not convinced that the new "Scripps 2.0" music pkg is going to work well at all on that station. The graphics on KSBY are far better than what WTXL just adopted. But like I've said before, as far as music goes, I'll need to hear more cuts before knowing whether the music pkg is going to work or not.
  7. I'm sure they can coordinate with each other, if needed, especially if a storm is close to the edge of each other's market. But each station has their own chopper, I think. Here's an older picture of the choppers from both KWTV and KOTV.
  8. Some markets can better justify it better than others. In OKC and Tulsa, there is no doubt that it seems to be a vital part of their coverage on some of the stations. Without it, KWTV/KOTV and KFOR would be forced to rely solely on chasers on the ground (which they also do) and maybe a camera on the transmitter tower (if they have one and if the storm is close enough). The quality of their coverage is vastly improved by having a live chopper. It gets more people to take shelter than it would by showing blurry livestreams and the radar. I wonder how much they offset the cost by having those sponsorships (i.e. Bob Moore Chopper 4, etc.). For the remainder, they probably just consider it the cost of doing business. But I'm sure you're right about how much the chopper loses by being on the ground in the off-season.
  9. In the town in Arkansas I grew up in (just a few counties over), one of the low-powered TV stations there actually has a program whose sole purpose is televising court proceedings. They even make that local TV show available on YouTube. So maybe some counties are more uptight than others. I feel so bad for the reporter. Given the market KNWA is in, she's probably early in her career. I hope everything works out well for her, and I have a feeling that everything will work out well for her. Maybe she can get that overturned and expunged from her legal record. She wasn't recording for broadcast--just for notetaking. I have a very hard time imagining that ever happening in the county in Arkansas I grew up in.
  10. I agree, the whole thing seems bizarre to me. The reporter maintains she did that previously in other courts and nothing was wrong. I think the judge should've been more understanding of that and left it at a warning. I hope she appeals that and maybe gets the ruling vacated by a higher court.
  11. At KNWA, a reporter was jailed for making an audio recording as part of her notetaking in court (such recording wasn't aired). If I was her, I'd appeal that verdict. https://www.ftvlive.com/sqsp-test/2019/11/21/judge-gives-reporter-jail-time-for-recording-in-court
  12. I totally agree...the in-house team at WAVE are very good at designing gfx--that is for sure.
  13. Wow, I didn't know that. I figured more stations in Tulsa would have helicopters. That would probably partly explain why I tend to watch KOTV (online of course) when I'm interested in watching storm coverage there.
  14. There is no way KFOR will lose its helicopter. It's a critical part of their storm coverage. And I think Nexstar knows that they need the helicopter for tornado coverage and looking at the storm and see if the funnel cloud/tornado has touched down. I'm not sure why Nexstar got rid of KLAS' helicopter and I wish they hadn't. But I don't think that will happen to other stations, especially KFOR and KTLA.
  15. I noticed that as well. I wonder why they prefer to run their newscasts using a "cold open". Maybe it's my personal preferences, but I don't think a newscast is complete without an actual open.
  16. Is there a tape of that somewhere online? That would be very interesting to look at.
  17. Good to know. I wonder if it's possible that it started even before the 80s. It makes sense that they have been running lake levels for a long time. The market is heavily agricultural with lots of places to boat on.
  18. Interesting. Do they use the same color scheme? How does it compare to WTXL?
  19. So this confirms it was in-house. This is really refreshing to see. I wish more stations would design packages in-house these days.
  20. I searched through a few vintage videos on YouTube from KOLR10, KY3, and KSPR and I didn't find any lake level reports prior to that time. I'm thinking that KOLR10 may have only recently added that to their newscasts. But I'm not certain on that.
  21. So there isn't as much to move over to KNXV, then. But Wikipedia is claiming on KASW's page that KASW's master control and "most internal operations" are "based" at KNXV's studios. I'm thinking Wikipedia might need to fix that. Slightly off-topic, but I'm curious how they deal with moving master controls. Do they need to take the station off the air while the switch is made? Or can it be done internally without interrupting the signal or programming?
  22. Based on this promo, Local 10 has reporters in Venezuela and Haiti, as well. On a side note, it seems like they are using the phrase "Local 10 News is everywhere". If I recall from earlier in the decade, WTVJ heavily promoted themselves by saying "Team (or NBC) 6 is everywhere". Not sure if that slogan is just for this promo, though.
  23. That's really unfortunate. As for the L.L. Bean jackets, I wouldn't be surprised if they keep using the existing "24-Hour News 8" logo on those until the next time they place a bulk order. I think Nexstar knows that it would be a really bad idea for them to dump their news helicopter in the #2 TV market in the country. Notwithstanding what they did at KLAS, I would expect Nexstar to keep it at KTLA.
  24. I would be surprised if they didn't consolidate. But I'm sure it takes some time to get the master control, transmitter link, and all the other equipment and stuff relocated to KNXV's facilities. Especially if KNXV is going to be debuting new gfx anytime soon, I'd assume getting KASW relocated isn't at the top of their priority list.
