Daytime Drama: How will ABC 7 make room for Katie & Kelly?

NBC 5 Chicago

Interesting article today by Feder. Thoughts?

With this move there may be questions about Windy City Live and/or General Hospital like he said. And furthermore it complicates the matters with the new GM. Granted its 16 months away but very interesting with all the schedule change ups.

I have a comment pending with Rob, because alot of loose ends aren't accounted for in the article...

Unfortunately I forgot my questions, but when the comment gets the okay, I'll report it here.

UPDATE: There are no loose ends, "Katie" will be at 3 (not 2), and the station has already picked up "Live".

Current ABC 7 GM Emily Barr was instrumental in starting Windy City Live, if she's gone (she's leaving this summer), the station may not stick with the program and go with "Live with Kelly" that is pretty well an ABC O&O standard program now at 9am even though it is syndicated by Disney and not an ABC network show. The only other option would be to air "Live" at midnight after Jimmy Kimmel.

WARNING: This may be disorganized and rambling-

I don't know, but I see this as a sign of things to come at ABC7. With new management coming soon and a slow (but noticable) ratings decline, I'd expect in the next 2-3 years...

- WCL gets cancelled, OR...shortened to a half hour, and put in the 11am hour either before, but probably after the 11 o'clock news.

- Aging talent like Magers, Yu, Taft and even Giangreco or Rose may be in line to get the boot (especially Yu if the 11am show gets shortened).

- Even if there's some talent changes, I wouldn't expect much in the way of anchor promotions, seeing as they have a deep anchor team on weeknights.

- When personel changes do get made, I think hurt feelings and angry exits may be possible...

- - Alan Krashesky may seem a shoe-in for the 10pm news (32 years in nearly every role), but in a town that still hires reporters by ethnicity and diversity before talent, Cheryl Burton may fight to move up from her 10pm "contributing" role. Of course, they both could get passed up in favor of the younger, "diverse" Ravi Baichwal.

- - WLS could be in a real bind when Jerry Taft leaves, seeing as fellow meteorologists Mike Caplan, Phil Schwarz and Tracy Butler are all about equally qualified to succeed him (20+ career, about 50 years old). Caplan joined in 1994, worked mornings, weekends and now the 4pm news, but became certified last; Butler also came in '94, and also worked weekends and mornings; Schwarz joined in 1995, works weekends and regularly fills in on all broadcasts. I put Butler as least likely to get the chief position.

- - If WCL gets cancelled, Ryan Chiaverini may re-enter the sports department as a reporter, but could land higher if the sixty-ish Giangreco and Rose retire. Rafer Weigel is clearly in line for the top spot once Giangreco is gone.

Now remember, I'm no expert and ABC7 is notorious for playing it safe, but these are all legitimate issues that the station could face...and new leadership may not want to push it off much longer.

I couldn't imagine airing "Live" only at night. Do any stations do this?

No, most all markets air "Live" at 9am. Some stations (mostly NBC affiliates) air it at 10 or 11 around the Today Show.

It'd be nice if WLS would just let Inside Edition and Jeopardy! go, so another station could air Jeopardy! in a later timeslot in the evenings. WCL could air in the afternoons at 2pm and "Live" could air at 9am.

I don't see jeopardy! moving out of ABC 7, maybe 4:30pm next year? Also has Inside Edition always been with ABC 7 since the beginning? ('88) That being said, don't you think WCL is at least popular enough (or sufficient ratings) not to get cancelled a bit too soon?

Where/when does Wheel of Fortune air in Chicago? I know the syndicator likes them to go back to back.

@ 6:30 PM after 6 PM newscast on WLS (ABC 7).

Also has Inside Edition always been with ABC 7 since the beginning? ('88)

YES (I believe), @ 3PM
