Not "ALL" HD Is The Same...

As we all know New York's Top 3 stations all now broadcast in high definition. However there are some High Definition broadcasts that are more "High-Def" than others. For instance, today I was watching WCBS and WABC today, and I found that although both of them are in HD, WCBS is in 1080i and WABC is only in 720p. 1080i is significantly clearer and better than that of 720p. I believe WNBC is also in 1080i, but I did not see a newscast so I couldn't tell. But from what I've seen the clarity is over 10x better on WCBS than WABC. WCBS is just extraordinary with its HD look, so again, I'm not sure if WABC will be switching to 1080i cameras, but as far as I know, it is still not the clearest in the studios. Does anyone know the pixel rate for WNBC? Thus far, WCBS has the BEST HD clarity in the New York Market.

WABC can't broadcast in 1080i until the fall when the Super13/14 Soundstage is built. The current set isn't HD compliant really, and when tested in 1080i, you could see way too many flaws. So it's 720p until the overhaul.

I've noticed those black dots as well. Hopefully that will be resolved when the full HD stuff comes in Fall. I think nynewsguy mentioned that the logo will change (slightly) to the "shiny"/"metallic" version of the ABC7 logo...the one used in the news opens and promos.

Yes, the logo, will change slightly, as mentioned. It will be "grapically enhanced" - slightly animated, more three-dimensional, and "reflective" (the shiny effect). The L3's will animate from the logo, in other words, the ABC7 will animate, the L3's move in from the right, animate, change, then move back to behind the logo. It's all HotHaus stuff. Pretty cool.

Has anyone else noticed since the news went HD there are black flickering dots that appear on the upper right of the 7 on the abc7 logo?

All the time, I find it to be quite a nuisance, in fact since December that flickering has been there, I guess it all shows how their current graphics are just not suited for 720p HD.

OH MY GOD HOTHAUS CONFIRMED!!!

Also, will the ABC logo be glossy like what we've seen in Network promos? I'm a bit surprised that we don't have a spinning Circle 7 like in WXYZ's Giant Octopus graphics and WTVG's mods to KABC's old look.

While there are more lines of resolution between 720p and 1080i, the quality is about the same. Some would argue that 720p is better because it is a progressive scanned picture. 1080i is interlaced but with more resolution.

Also, remember, most stations have sub-channels that take away bandwidth from the HD. So that will hurt the HD quality. WCBS does not have any sub channels, so you get the highest bitrate at the highest resolution available from WCBS... WNBC and WABC each have two sub-channels that take away about 5-6Mbps total from the HD.
