A3N 1002
I highly doubt that the call letters would change to WTPA since those calls are currently being used by a radio station in Central PA. It wouldn't make sense either. Truly a sad day for the broadcast industry, just hearing about the news makes me wanna vomit. A tv station can have the same call letters as a radio station, the only difference would be the tv, am or fm. In fact KFMB's call letters are used for tv, am and fm (KFMB-TV, KFMB-AM, KFMB-FM). Mrtraveler01 738
There's a lot of talk about Sinclair's plans for News Channel 8. Without making any definitive comments about the creation of a national cable news channel, Mr. Smith said NewsChannel 8 “provides the perfect platform should we decide to expand it into other markets, especially given the amount of local news we produce across our entire portfolio. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/30/business/media/sinclair-to-buy-tv-stations-from-allbritton.html Unless they're willing to spend big bucks to compete with Fox News and the like in the already oversaturated cable news industry. They're setting themselves up for failure. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/12568-sinclairagain/page/22/#findComment-86326 Share on other sites
GoldenShine9 1513
How high is too high for Sinclair in terms of the biggest market they could try to get? If a station in NYC came on the market (doubtful, but hypothetically), would they be able to afford that? If a station in NYC came on the market (doubtful, but hypothetically), would they be able to afford that? With Sinclair, anything is possible. All they'd have to do to buy such a station is put down an offer, transfer about 15-20 stations to a shill company and BAM! Sinclair gets a NYC station and they'd keep control of the stations they "sold" through the shills. kjohnson 17
Good grief. Are there any good companies in media to work for left? Sinclair keeps buying companies I'd like to work for. SInclair produces a lot of local news (everywhere but St. Louis). When do they plan on investing some money in the stations? Buying them is one thing. Running them is another. This is their first time in a Top 10 market so it will be interesting to see if they're going to run WJLA just like they run their mid-market stations. GoldenShine9 1513
Now the rumors begin of who their next targets are. Clearly if a company goes on the block, no matter who, Sinclair will be always the frontrunner. Rusty Muck 4374
Now that Sinclair has WJLA....what will the new call letters be? WJSS? WDDS? WSIN? WTPA? WGOP? :rofl!: Sima Birach owns the WGOP call letters, so that's not going to happen. skbl17 188
It can't be WSIN either: 1) If any station ever gets calls named after the company, it will be WBFF, not WJLA. 2) Sinclair wouldn't want to commit a SIN by rebranding WJLA as WSIN now, would they? GoldenShine9 1513
There may be a few people who probably think that WJLA stands for Jesus Loves Allbritton. That assumes that Sinclair makes WJLA a flagship of sorts and doesn't try to break into even higher markets. The only reasonable opportunities I see opening in markets higher than #8 are WHDH (if Sunbeam comes up and NBCU passes) and KRON (if Media General decides it's not worth keeping). tyrannical bastard 3953
Well damn....WJSS is taken too...and it's based outside of Baltimore! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WJSS ...and WSBG is taken too! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WSBG So much for naming a station after the founder! (Julian Sinclair Smith).. and even WDDS (David D. Smith) http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/callsign/query.hts?Form_Level=callsign&Call_Sign=wdds Ironically, WTPA used to be the call letters WHTM had, but is now an unrelated radio station. I chose them for another reason (along with WGOP) I think WJLA is going to stick around since the call letter changes back in the 70s were tied to different owners keeping the old call letters alive on their radio stations, forcing the TV stations to change. It's not like they need to blow up things, i.e. WBMG or WPTY turning into WIAT and WATN, respectively. Rusty Muck 4374
If WJLA is in fact forced to change calls, it'll probably just go back to WMAL-TV... It depends if Cumulus Radio drives up a hard bargain. The odd thing is, WMAL was one of a few legacy ABC Radio AM stations that Disney doesn't own the call letters to. (Disney actually owns the WABC, WLS, KGO and KABC calls, leasing them out to Cumulus.) If ABC had bought WJLA, the reverse would likely have happened. Oh, well. We'll see how long WJLA is continued to run like a virtual ABC O&O and eventually gets turned into a NewsMax outlet, which won't fly in Northern Virginia. Whenever Ansin puts WHDH on the block, it's NBC's to lose... but with the way Ansin has stuck it to NBC over the past 30 years, anything's possible. Hell, MG could unload KRON to Sinclair for a pittance and get that dead weight off their backs (after all, THEY weren't the ones who paid $800M for that turkey). And for all practical purposes, a Sinclair-run KRON could actually be an improvement. And i'm sure that if Ansin sells and tries to stick it to NBC, then NBC will have no problem returning the favor by threatening to strip the affiliation away (i.e. KRON). I'm sure that the threat of stripping the NBC affiliation away from WHDH will ward off many buyers (and make the station lose value). This is not Jeff Zucker's NBC, Comcast won't have any problems showing who's boss. Media General could use the money from a Sinclair acquisition of out-of-place KRON and do one of two things: 1) Strategic upgrades of stations that have growth potential but are lagging, such as WSLS, WCMH and WVTM 2) New acquisitions of stations that could strategically fit, such as Bahakel They don't even have to offer it for that much, and I can't see anyone else willing to buy KRON since the networks already have O&O's except for Fox which is unlikely to leave Cox-owned KTVU (a very strong station, notwithstanding the controversy recently).
