Sinclair...Again

The subsections are *mostly* left up to the station. Then there's a list of one or two Sinclair makes them list, like Behind the Headlines or Waste Watch, etc.

on WGME's See It Shoot It Send It, Your Voice Your Future, Political Pulse, Health Care Reform, Waste Watch, Washington Times, and Behind the Headlines are all from corporate office.

WWMT's selection is similar but they've seem to have put in more local ones.

That's my gripe though, why does Sinclair need to mandate this much junk on their webpage? The overall layout wouldn't be too back if they cut out the unnecessary junk and decluttered their website a little bit.

I think rather than referring to stations as "flagships" within Sinclair, it's more of a "hub and spoke" system that's been developed over the years.

With WSYX/WTTE/WWHO, they've been a Sinclair station for over 18 years, and was a major part of Taft/Great American, AnchorMedia and later River City, despite their third place ranking in the Columbus market. I remember an old NewsBlues posting when they allowed anonymous postings about stations, and the poster said that WSYX was a "cash cow" and possibly the most profitable of all of Sinclair's stations (at the time). This was back in the late 90s when they were in the midst of being eaten alive by WCMH and WBNS, and trying to "merge" with WTTE. Keep in mind that this was right before duopolies were legal, and Columbus has been a thorny market for this since they lack the number of full-powered signals to permit a duopoly.

With the purchase of stations and entire groups, I would imagine Sinclair will continue to utilize facilities and strong, established stations to leverage certain efficiencies over their stations.

That station has ALWAYS been a cash cow. For that matter, the entire market is for six reasons:

-few signals

-no adjacent market signals

-political advertising (Columbus is the ultimate battleground city)

-Buckeyes

-slightly upscale/better educated than average market

-steady slow growth for 50 years

WCMH is also treated like a flagship. It is MG's #2 revenue station.

Yeah It always made lot of $$$ for whoever the owner was, and I was told the #1 reason from an employee was Buckeyes and I always feel without having the two stations together ABC/FOX...The ABC affiliate makes alot $$$ by itself. I would like and hope that with the growth of the market. The ABC affiliate would have a reputable owner and Sinclair could own FOX/CW and have a (4) newsroom operation....WSYX makes the most $$$ in the Sinclair food chain as well too!

I'd put the Buckeyes at the top of that list, and in bolded lettering. It's why the Wolfe family (the WBNS stations) has been so deeply tied to tOSU for decades.

Of course, given the long history of the Taft family and their connection to Ohio, it meant a lot for Taft Broadcasting to have WTVN-TV in the state capital, even if it was nowhere as successful in the ratings as WKRC-TV was.

I don't know ... I think the money they make from the ads trumps anything the Buckeyes bring in. Ohio is a battleground state and Columbus is THE battleground city. We get BOMBARDED with political ads in this market because Central Ohio doesn't consistently vote one way or another. It was ridiculous during the last election. Wall-to-wall election ads.

My point, though, is that that station (and all the stations in the market) have ALWAYS been money-makers.

By the way, that Lawrence Rogers book is a very interesting read. It talks about how Taft came to flip all of their stations over to ABC. WKRC was hemmed in by WHIO, WISH, WBNS and WHAS and did rather poorly in terms of revenues as a CBS station. They flipped to ABC because of their success with WTVN-TV and because Dayton didn't have an ABC station at the time and it wasn't surrounded by strong ABC affiliates. They didn't have to share viewers with WHIO.

Ahead of their time maybe? Maybe they also understood they could make more money even with lower ratings because of ABC's young demographics.

Sinclair hosted another one of those "Town Hall" Meetings.

This time they held a town hall in Toledo, discussing about their ongoing carriage dispute between them and Block Communications' Buckeye Cable systems. Monday was their 50th day since WNWO been off their cable systems.

They're kidding, right? WNWO is not worth $2.00/per subscriber. Hell, I think 24 cents was a stretch. WNWO is worth about maybe 15 at most. They're low-rated. They showed a graphic comparing their proposed rate against other cable networks. The broadcasting business model differs from the cable networks and really I have no idea why they think they're worth as much as those cable networks. I have the feeling they're asking for higher retrans fees not to give to the network, but to help fund their buying spree.

Speaking of Buckeye cable system, they've said that viewers of Buckeye cable system can watch Sochi Olympics on CBC Windsor(CBET).

From the looks of the logo, it looks like Buckeye is a division of Time Warner Cable. I know they aren't, but that's the way it looks.

Buckeye is owned by Block, isn't it? Why don't they just use WLIO, which they own, like Time Warner does when they get into these disputes.

Sinclair won't let NBC available. They also dropped WDIV as result. That's why.

One of the many problems Block has with Sinclair is they want a clause in the contract that says Buckeye will carry ANY cable channel Sinclair owns on their extended basic tier at the same rate.

I also heard WDIV pulled their signal (I don't think they aired NBC programming anyway) as a show of strength.

Post-Newsweek throwing in with Sinclair? LOL!

Time Warner plugged in stations from Terre Haute when Hearst pulled WLWT off in Cinncinnat. That's why I suggested that WLIO could be something to plug in.

I would love to see how much stations like WTOL and WTVG charge Buckeye to see how far off Sinclair's estimates are with them. I think Sinclair is biting off more than they can chew with this feud.

They should be lucky. CBC's coverage is superior to the sap-fest that NBC turns the Olympics into. Wish I had access to CBC.

What in the world?! it looks like StlNow is not cancel I guess you was right they did extend the agreement or......

It's gone now. Not sure when this happened, but it must've been either this week or sometime in mid to late January.

Just looked at my guide and now KDNL is airing Family Feud at 5pm and The Simpsons at 10pm.

Syndex & Network Non-duplication rules prevent this.

Yes, I'm aware of Time-Warner's importing Nexstar stations during disputes. Apparently, the language in Time-Warner & Nexstar's retransmission agreement was somewhat ambiguous. Time-Warner has chosen to use this to their advantage in a sort of "Try and stop me" move. The courts have sided with Time-Warner so far. However, Had it been Hearst suing and not Nexstar they would have been stopped as Hearst really was the infringed party not Nexstar. And, I also expect Nexstar to "correct" this language when the contract comes back up.

That said I can almost guarantee you if WLIO was imported Sinclair would file suit so fast their heads would spin.

About time they got rid of StlNow now we just have to wait to see is they gonna bring back their own news

It's not just that Block owns Buckeye Cable and WLIO. They also own the cities' lone daily newspaper, The Toledo Blade.

S!nclair would have a legitimate case against them.

Last Friday was the last day for STL Now. They are working on a local newscast. Has been delayed.

I had a feeling they were doing something like that just based on the job postings on Sinclair's website. But I haven't heard how far along they are in developing that and when it might air. And also if it's going to be a traditional newscast or if they're going to try to do something similar to *shudder* WJZY.

If they're smart, they'll hire that Larry guy who was fired by Belo for making statements about the IRS.

I think you mean Larry Connors. Remember, he has an non-compete clause on his contract for a year because of his termination from KMOV.

Based on these postings...it's no longer a question of IF...but WHEN....

I too hope it's a real conceited effort to put on a news program, not some joke that the FOX O&O is putting out in Charlotte....although the roles and job responsibilities seem lumped together and could be a "shoestring" effort at best...

May Sweeps anyone?????
