Now read the updated post.

p.s. I don't watch Bill or Sean because I don't care for their views. Yes, I share their views but I don't watch these programs because I can develop my own opinions and don't need Bill, Sean or whoever to do that.

And fox has definitely gone in the right direction by giving Gretchen Carlson and Megyn Kelly their own shows. Well deserved.

I'll stick with NPR for my news, political commentary and scientific analysis. Thanks!

Actually NPR isn't that bad, miles better than the cable networks as far as content is concerned. It's just that their presentation style is just so stale and boring...

This puts all other news outlets to shame, as most only have one touch screen in their studios. FOX News Channel has taken a giant step in tech, and I'm loving it.

I never imagined that any news set could come close to making the WSVN Newsplex look normal in comparison.

Let's see if I have the correct word for this. How about gaudy?

Liberace is apparently alive and well, and designing news sets for Fox now.

See but half of the negative people here are just saying it because they are on the left and want to make the right's new state of the art studio look worthless. Just remember which station is the most watched cable news network...

I'm on the right (borderline libertarian) and I can't stand Fox's emphasis on gimmicks and inconsistent and flashy (and most times, poorly done in-house) graphics. Opinion programming is another story.

Just give me the damn news.

...and go to the Internet or pick up a good newspaper. :D

Seriously, broadcast and cable news is a joke in this country. Either you have sensationalist "news" (NBC, ABC, CBS* to a lesser extent,) nationally-shunned international news sources (DW, France 24, NHK, BBC, Al Jazeera, etc.,) or opinion programming that defies the very meaning of "news", especially on so-called "cable news" channels like Fox News, MSNBC and to a lesser extent, CNN.

Not watching Fox News isn't enough; MSNBC and CNN are terrible alternatives, and the other listed sources are incredibly sparse and hard to come by on cable, IPTV and satellite. Myron Falwell, I actually have a better suggestion: turn the television off.

* I am aware of CBS's flip from the Couric era to the present Fager/Pelley era.

No, It is not the 1950's - The news shows then were only about news and not the way the studio and person delivering the news looked.

Anchors today don't necessarily need to be sitting at a desk with a dull background behind them, but today - What are we really getting from an anchor screaming a tease about Miley Cyrus who then walks quickly in endless circles around a studio in red heels while a steadicam follows her that's so revolutionary?

The only thing I'm saying is that I don't see how a news set with relatively new uses for technology changes the way news will be deliverered or puts its competitors to shame. Will it steal away and attract new viewers because they like what they see? Well, sure, but that's not changing news. That's dangling shiny car keys in front of their faces.

I have two words: absolutely ridiculous. I dislike people being used as props, which is exactly what is going on here. I can't imagine that these people are any more productive using these ridiculously over-sized touch screens on set than they would be on a traditional computer in a newsroom off-set, especially since they appear to be a typical computer monitor resolution zoomed to fill a big screen.

Yeah, it looks just as unnecessary as the Situation Room does.

And as we have seen, technology doesn't make you a better journalist. Hopefully these gimicks don't dumb down Shep's program too much because it's pretty informative by Fox News standards. ;)

Daily Show just covered it as well. I'll post a link tomorrow if no one else does.

Seems like the general consensus here is that it's over the top and unnecessary. It's interesting because I've read some international forums and they seem to like it quite a lot.

Personally, while it's exciting to see something new, the FOX news deck is disappointing. The design is interesting but too awkward for TV and I don't think that having the "information specialists" in the studio is going to help on a day to day basis, only during major breaking news. From what I've seen, the show is still heavily produced, meaning the content isn't really a "stream" of what's currently happening. For example, Shep Smith walked up to a guy at a big screen, and you could tell he was just sitting there, waiting for him to come talk. Graphics for the segment had to have been created ahead of time.

The several large video walls are not that great. They are made up of many small panels with visible lines and/or uneven color balancing! When will set designers realize that is distracting and not ignorable?! It makes anything on the screen look cheap.

I'd say the worst part is when Shep uses that remote to control the screen. No point to it. He needs to focus on talking and someone in production should control the environment. I'd say the best part is really only that this is something new and shiny to look at, and that hopefully it will either become better or fail miserably (what are the chances?), so then they can try something else.

The set up of the studio itself is interesting but the quality isn't great and the concept isn't great either. But that's a whole other post. ;)

I think it only seems over the top to people because of those absolutely GIGANTIC touchscreens.

Exactly. Otherwise it looks good.

I think it is a horrible set. Most the people at my station think it is horrible. It just looks cartoonish!

I bet your station uses an FX set. ;)

You know, we have had the same set for over 9 years (as long as I have been here) so I couldn't even begin to tell you who built it.

hehe, you took my post seriously.

What I meant is that FX builds ugly sets (for the most part, but their newer stuff has been really good). This set is much better than anything FX can build.

For the record, this set and this discussion is a good reason why I get my news on TV from Al Jazeera America, or at least straight from the source online via the Associated Press.

  • 5 months later...

So I just caught a bit of the FOX News Alert from earlier this evening regarding the missing plane... and Shep's in the newsroom.

Did the Content Specialists or whatever all go home? Have they been using the Deck for it's original purpose at all lately?

He only originates from the News Deck during weekdays and primetime. I personally would like to see FOX Report Weekend and weekend breaking news to broadcast from the News Deck, seeing as how they put the FOX Report logo in Shepard Smith Reporting's graphics for small news updates.

My friend made a funny assumption:

"They probably shut down the News Deck at night and shove Shep into the broom closet."
