Savannah Guthrie & Meet The Press

I was surprised to not see something about this here, so I guess I can take the liberty of starting something about it. Savannah Guthrie filled for David Gregory on Meet the Press this weekend. This was interesting because NBC made a rather large deal out of promoting it on twitter and facebook. Usually, I can't imagine that a network would make a any sort of deal about a fill in anchor for a sunday show. She filled in, and people think she did pretty well. It's no secret NBC is probably looking to sack David Gregory, who has succeeded in making MTP #3! Do we think they are considering removing David from MTP and bringing on Savannah? What happens to "Today" then?

I remember in the weeks and months after Stephanopoulos left and Amanpour began at 'This Week', there were several weeks when a higher-profile anchor filled in. Everyone from Elizabeth Vargas to Ted Koppel and even Babs sat in the chair. Each of those weeks was fairly well-publicized. Even if they're not dumping Gregory at NBC, I could understand why they'd promote Guthrie's appearance.

Right, but DG has hosted MTP for some time, and there have been plenty of fill ins over the years w/o nearly as much buzz. Not disagreeing, just think it's a tad odd.

Similarly, Amanpour led a ratings decline and was eventually let go.

I remember watching Savannah right before she became co-anchor and Matt was on vacation. It was when the Supreme Court handed down the ruling on Obamacare(...after watching JKL I have to put Affordable Care Act in here) and she was handling the NBC News coverage solo. I think she has the hard news chops. Also, I think she is better without Matt.

I don't think they would let Savannah take over as moderator of MTP. I would think there would be other correspondents, like Koppel and Harry Smith to name a few, at NBC that would want a shot, especially since they were brought in for Rock Center.

If NBC was to remove Savannah Guthrie from Today and put her anywhere else, then it would most definitely either be Dateline or Meet The Press. However though, since she's only been on Today as a co-anchor for only a couple years now, moving her would probably be a huge ass mistake (yet again) as people would have finally been adjusting to her only to, yet again, have some turnover. She NEEDS to stay at the Today Show for several more years before being moved so it won't seem as if NBC is just yet again, canning a female anchor in preference for Matt Lauer.

1. Unless you guys know something I don't, there's no way Brian Williams is leaving Nightly News anytime soon, but if he were to leave, I would be shocked if NBC didn't pick Lester. Lester would be the first African-American solo anchor if I'm not mistaken. Lester faces the same exact issue Ann Curry did being that he has been there for so long and is always stuck doing the sidekick roles but I don't think NBC would pass over him because of being afraid of having another Ann Curry. Let's keep in mind that Lester was the lead anchor throughout NBC's breaking news coverage of Newton, Brian Williams wasn't brought in until his 6:30pm newscast if I'm not mistaken.

2. Savannah is the future of the Today Show. I've said in the past that I feel like Matt will leave at the end of the year or beginning of next year to do something else (maybe primetime specials/interviews or co-host of Meredith's new show or move to another network?). Whenever that happens, Savannah will take over as the lead face. With that being said, now that Carson has been added to the Today Show fray (and I'm sure Tamron Hall will also be added soon); Savannah's load won't be so heavy especially on Friday's similar to what ABC does with George. Because of that, I'm almost 100% sure that Savannah replaces Gregory and that Gregory leaves to cover politics for CNN.

There's no reason why Savannah couldn't do both Today and MTP.
