Airport Newsstands

Those of us who have been through airports have surely seen the branded newsstands (CNBC, CNN, Fox, MSNBC).

It appears that that is going local - at Reagan National Airport (DCA), there will soon be an NBC 4 Washington Newsstand.

I didn't see any at O'Hare (where I'm writing this from).

This is very smart branding. I would love to see these go to more big cities.

I don't really see how these stores are news though. These stores have practically nothing to do with news, they are really just stores to get a drink and a bag of chips and maybe a newspaper.

It does make sense from a promotional standpoint. Washington, DC is a tourist destination, it makes the media impression for travelers and the fact that it's branded as NBC 4 rather than NBC Washington people will immediately know what channel to turn to when they get to their hotel room rather than channel surf. Also I guess it could portray a sense of "news power" that a particular station has if they are able to run a shop. In reality this deal is probably connected to the CNBC shops where NBC Universal probably licensed out the name as well. Looking at DCAs website it appears a CNBC Shop is opening soon probably 300 feet apart.

But I'd imagine most people don't realize that all the shops are all commonly owned, for example The Paradies, which runs the CNBC stores also runs The New York Times Bookstore, WFAN 66 AM, WXIA and their 11 Alive Store, Univision shops, along with more convential retailers that would have shops in a mall like Lacoste, Pandora, Bass Pro Shops (but what would they sell in an airport?) and Vera Bradley. http://www.theparadiesshops.com/brand.asp

After doing a quick google search it appears, NBC 4 News, is opening a second location at Dulles International. I wouldn't expect them to open one in the regions busiest airport, BWI Marshall, because despite Anne Arundel County being in both Baltimore and DC media market the DC stations don't really cover news in AA County.

If you fly through PHX there are golf shops. Recently a new concessionaire took over the airport's restaurants and has made major strides. You can now go to PHX and scattered throughout not only are national chains but local restaurants (I've eaten in two of them).

The list reads a bit like a who's who of Valley eating, both upscale and fast casual: among the choices available to travelers are Chelsea's Kitchen, Cheuvront Kitchen and Wine Bar, Dilly's Deli, Four Peaks Brewery, Sauce, Modern Burger (from Sam Fox), Sweet Republic and Tammie Coe Cakes. Most of them are in Terminal 4, which handles the vast majority of airport traffic and is home to US Airways/American and Southwest.

Compare that to O'Hare. That's the other airport I tend to find myself in. Sky Harbor puts O'Hare to shame in terms of eating options, not to mention a lot of other things.

In the terminal redo (that will finish up later this year) at Love Field in Dallas, there are new storefront and restaurant tenants. As far as a TV-related store brand goes, according to the tenant list, CNN will have a branded store there by later this year. The other branded stores on the list there are magazine- or newspaper-related (D Magazine, Texas Monthly, Travel & Leisure, etc.).
