Breaking News 839 Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 Hey Fred; Have you seen the facebook boycott? The viewers are pissed, and I've been a fan of Ludlow and Strickler. I know you like Kendrick, and I have my good days and bad days with him. There days I like him and others I can't stand him. Kendrick, In my opinion should go back to Denver. I thought he would be perfect fit at KMGH with Anne. I wish Ludlow and Strickler could go to WSYX. As for as Dispatch if they were to sell I could see Gannett buying the paper/tv. I don't see any radio in(Gannett) their portfolio and maybe CBS radio could be interested in Dispatch radio if they were to ever sell. Don't get me wrong, because I'm all for locally ownership/families owning these tv stations. Just like The Hubbard's in Twin Cities, or The Wray Family in Shreveport, LA and of course The Cox Family that owns Cox Media Group. The family ownership are starting to dwindle to a very few family companies.

You know, when the Wolfes are playing in the same sandbox with other power brokers you can be a bully and get away with it. But it doesn't work so well when you're going after an Average Joe. Nobody likes a bully and sending Zeiger and company after a disgruntled viewer is being a bully. At a time when local TV news is watched by fewer and fewer people, they should be happy someone cares enough about their product to voice their opinion. A smart station owner would kill them with kindness instead of sending lawyers out after people. I could see Gannett buying the stations. Gannett is an awful newspaper company but they aren't a bad TV station owner.
tyrannical bastard 4036 Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 The way things are going at WCMH....they could benefit from hiring Strickler and/or Ludlow as soon as their non-competes are up. They are paling in staff compared to the other stations in Columbus. The competition has had a lot of shifting amongst themselves over the years. This was the case with Angela Pace going from WCMH to WBNS, Ellie Merritt going from WBNS to WCMH, and Chris Bradley going from WSYX to WBNS. Even Carol Luper spent a good portion of her career at WSYX after a decade-long stint with 10TV back in the 80s.

You do make an interesting point, and as much as I'm team-syx...You do have to ask yourself how long will MG will keep Colleen, Cabot and Jym? I know Jym had some health issues, but signed a six year deal with the station which will take him to 70yrs of age. Colleen and Cabot have been a mainstay for the last 20 years. Would the new MG clean house at WCMH and bring in a new young team w/ Ellie & Duane as the replacements of Colleen/Cabot who've both been with the station since the 80s. I do wonder could they get Strickler as Cabot's heir to the throne. Ellie get Colleen's job and Dunae also part of a new generation team. You do have to wonder who would take Jym weather job, because the man been on 4 since 1979. Seems like WCMH wants to keep their vets, but you never know with this broadcast news climate. 10 has had it issues with many of their vets. Kaylor retiring, Pace moving upstairs to mgmt, Cambern retired, Ludlow/Stricker not renewed. 6 didn't invest with their vets with firing Countiss, Hetherington, Brown, Wagner, Scoville, Speigal not renewed. Cabot/Colleen (along with Revish at 10) have had many decades on Columbus television.
tvjay 6 Posted June 5, 2014 Posted June 5, 2014 The way things are going at WCMH....they could benefit from hiring Strickler and/or Ludlow as soon as their non-competes are up. If their contracts were NOT renewed does the non-competes clause still have any power? Just curious. My gut says no.
PupReporter 0 Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 WSYX made it to number two in the May books. I give it two years before they're number one. They have the largest news staff, 27 LiveU backpacks, and their morning show is stellar. They recently leased a helicopter called "Sky6" and they're sponsoring almost every festival and event in town. I agree with another user, they're lacking anchors. I extremely dislike Mitch Jacob for personal reasons, but he's taking that newsroom to number one in the market.

Rusty Muck 4405 Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Their lawyers (Zeiger) have a reputation for being jerks. My impression of them is that they are the kind who pull out the proverbial bazooka to kill a butterfly. Don't these people read the papers? This move is about as bright as the one last month where a vendor sent a cease and desist letter to an Amazon customer for writing a negative review. They should be inviting them over to the station for free bumper stickers, t-shirts or key chains instead a pulling a boneheaded move like this. Amazing that people pay $500 an hour for so called "legal expertise" that is so lacking in common sense. Great job Wolfes, sue your viewers. LOL Upon further evaluation, perhaps the Dispatch should be sold to Gannett. After all, Gannett's legal counsel seems to forget how the Internet functions as well.

Gannett is an awful newspaper company but they aren't a bad TV station owner. But who gets WBNS AM/FM? Gannett hasn't owned a radio station for decades. And that's kinda important, because the OSU flagship rights that have been on WBNS AM/FM for decades are a literal ATM for the Wolfes. Plus the last remaining shard of the Ohio News Network (a radio service with only one main news anchor and actualities produced by the affiliate stations) is still tied into both WBNS-TV and WBNS-FM. Or would Gannett buy the entire Dispatch operation anyway, with WBNS AM/FM entering the fold as their sole radio properties? Clearly, Hearst is fine with WBAL and WIYY and S!nclair is not actively looking to sell KOMO, KVI and KPLZ.
Samantha 2902 Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 Gannett would run into a problem in Indianapolis, too (Star + WTHR), unless they got a cross-ownership waiver.

I'll bet they have less, not all 27 work every day so why would they need so many?
PupReporter 0 Posted June 8, 2014 Posted June 8, 2014 I know for a fact they have 27 backpacks. They want one for every talent. I'm dating one of their former reporters, it's my home market. I freelanced for them and I follow some of their photogs, who posted last week about the 27 backpacks.

Or do they bring them home?
DirtyHarry 727 Posted June 9, 2014 Author Posted June 9, 2014 Would that be in case of nuclear attack or something? That seems overkill to me for some reason. Or do they bring them home? Maybe they serve some other purpose, like editing or faster uploading of stories in HD instead of 16:9 SD.
ns8401 957 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Maybe they serve some other purpose, like editing or faster uploading of stories in HD instead of 16:9 SD. It's certainly possible, It would certainly save money on proper editing tools.
PupReporter 0 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 They edit on clamshell and feed back via the liveu.
PupReporter 0 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 WCMH was edged out BARELY by WSYX. WBNS still takes the lead by far but WSYX is gaining on them on the weekend shows. After all, six is the only one with a five hour weekend morning show on both days. Mitch Jacob is a horrible person. He only hires young ectomorph guys that he thinks are gay and/or cute. He's evil and mean. He micromanages but isn't afraid to spend money. He likes showing his power. He sends a crew to national stories all the time, even when there's plenty of affiliates on the ground, including sister stations. Oklahoma tornado and Washington mudslide are the most recent notable trips.
tyrannical bastard 4036 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Count out Kai Jackson, Kristine Frazao and Shelia Gray, since they're not based in Columbus....Kai and Kristine are based out of Baltimore and Sheila is based out of WKRC in Cincinnati.... Comparing WSYX's staffing to WCMH is convincing enough that Sinclair is really pulling their weight in Columbus, while Media General is not...and the ratings are starting to show it.... For years, WBNS had the reputation of not only buying the latest toys, but more than one of them at the same time. And to my consternation at the time, Dispatch "paywalled" their newspaper way back in the 2000s, before relenting, and now going to the gated model that is commonplace with many newspapers, where a number of articles are allowed in a month free of charge. As long as Dispatch isn't hemorrhaging money, I expect the Wolfe Family to keep things the way they are with their grandfathered media monopoly of radio, TV and newspapers in the Columbus area. With WSYX and WCMH owned by out-of-town mega companies that have had their brushes with massive growth and teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, it is a sense of consistency with Dispatch that will keep things status quo at WBNS through the good and bad.

I can see installing the app 27 times cause well the app is free. I mean we just started the process here of installing it on every reporters phone.
PupReporter 0 Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Sorry, my mistake. They actually have 29 backpacks. Look at this instagram by WSYX photog Aaron Nestor. And they do have them on all their iPhones and they use that option maybe once a week.
PupReporter 0 Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 WSYx takes another big jump toward number one: http://forums.tvnewstalk.net/index.php?/topic/13916-sinclair-rolls-out-new-graphics-in-columbus/
