lanman 58 Posted September 22, 2015 Author Posted September 22, 2015 A new secondary stand-up desk was used for a segment on Pittsburgh Today Live this morning:
jbnews 344 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 Okay. They must have to use part of this in their new studio. They are going to run themselves into the hole! That is a nice set, though!!
rkolsen 1685 Posted September 22, 2015 Posted September 22, 2015 It looks great. Could these parts be set up in the temporary studio and moved into the new studio over a weekend? Wouldn't it be difficult / annoying having to work around a construction site. Having trouble quoting the WJZ comment but I have to say while the set is old the main shot of the anchor desk looks dated but fine. That being said it would be GREAT if they upgraded the set but I don't think this current look would go with WJZ's folksy / kitschy style. It would fit in for WBAL or WBFF.
news89 468 Posted September 23, 2015 Posted September 23, 2015 This set at KDKA will be great. As far as WJZ, I do believe they will get a set and graphics. Just one thing that local GM won't let go is something.
MidwestTV 1240 Posted September 24, 2015 Posted September 24, 2015 I don't understand the whole situation with WJZ not wanting to get a new set, that set has been used since 98 and needs replaced badly. That set wasn't designed for HD which didn't occur till 11 years after it was built and they made little change when they transition. Hoping they are in the works for a new one right now. We had a conversation on here one day about it, but my understanding with WJZ is that they refuse to change anything because they're *afraid* to change anything. The old look of theirs is so iconic now that they think changing it will turn viewers off and force them away, so they're keeping everything around.
news89 468 Posted October 2, 2015 Posted October 2, 2015 I'm watching KDKA right now this temp set on air looks good.
lanman 58 Posted October 4, 2015 Author Posted October 4, 2015 The LED lighting they have is quite dynamic! On The Lynne Hayes-Freeland Show this morning, the news desk was red:
lanman 58 Posted October 4, 2015 Author Posted October 4, 2015 Also, I just found this website called TV Set Designs that shows the newsdesk that is commonly used as a standup desk on Pittsburgh Today Live (notice the file name in the picture below): http://tvsetdesigns.com/broadcast-design-photo-albums/modular-news-desk/ Could this be a hint at the designer or the upcoming main studio, or could they have hired this company for the temp set only?

Makes me think the idea that this set is just part of the new set is correct.

But I'm having a hard time thinking that a CBS O&O would go with this vendor.
news89 468 Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 This was taken from my phone. Not the best picture. However gives you an idea of what this "temp/new set" looks like via 16x9 SD feed.
Eat News 4745 Posted October 10, 2015 Posted October 10, 2015 Indeed, from this other photo by a KDKA staff member you can see the new floor: Looks like a laminate from Lumber Liquidators. Bet they got a good price after that 60 minutes piece.
lanman 58 Posted October 11, 2015 Author Posted October 11, 2015 I'm a bit late on this one (2 weeks, in fact). Jennifer Antkowiak posted this picture on Instagram of the old set being demolished:
lanman 58 Posted October 11, 2015 Author Posted October 11, 2015 Here's another picture from Paul Martino (source: Facebook):
jbnews 344 Posted October 11, 2015 Posted October 11, 2015 Does anybody know when the new set will debut?
Weeters 1969 Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Does anybody know when the new set will debut? Probably on or before October 29th since that's when Sweeps starts...
NEOMatrix 1307 Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 With WPXI and KDKA getting new sets, thats means that WTAE easily has the oldest set in Pittsburgh. Does anyone if WTAE will get a set redo sometime soon?
jbnews 344 Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 I don't know. They need one. They will probably get one soon with both their competition getting new ones.
Weeters 1969 Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 I don't know. They need one. They will probably get one soon with both their competition getting new ones. It's Hearst. Don't hold your breath...
jbnews 344 Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 I thought the local operations made the decision.
Weeters 1969 Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 I thought the local operations made the decision. Corporate sets the budget. If you want a new set and corporate disagrees, well, no set for you, try again next year.
rkolsen 1685 Posted October 13, 2015 Posted October 13, 2015 It's Hearst. Don't hold your breath...I thought they got new ones every eight or nine years about. But then again they decided to spend probably $100,000 refreshing WCVB's set (which is 9 years old).
EHTVnews 21 Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Sneak peek of the new set (from an employee at KDKA), will launch Monday at 4pm
