It's temporary...they're premiering a 30 for 30 doc tonight based on the Celtics-Lakers rivalry (more emphasis on the 1980s era), hence the '80s throwback logos.

I may be in the minority here, but I feel like the existing ESPN logo is beyond stale and I would love to see it replaced. Not sure if the 1979 logo is the solution though...

And 1985 was when the current ESPN logo debuted, making it one of the oldest in cable TV history (along with CNN, HBO, and MTV (though the "M" was trimmed down a few years ago)).

The Celtics-Lakers coloring confirms that the throwback is merely for the '30 for 30'. It doesn't appear that any other sport's profile has been changed.
