The original concept seemed to hope that affiliates would start their own small local news departments, that would insert 5 minutes of local news twice an hour. But, surprise, very few stations actually did that. Most stations ended up being low-power stations with 10 other "throwaway" networks that just ran NewsNet national and collected whatever tiny amount of ad revenue they could. The new model seems to be convincing stations to replace most of their existing local news departments with an hour of the NewsNet feed with a few minutes of local news sprinkled on top. What that tells me is the original concept is a failure, and they're now moving on to Plan B. They have to make this work. Eric Wotila is riding the already-in-freefall rollercoaster that is local TV news, and is now working on pulling out the brakes. T.L. Hughes 890
NewsNet has apparently started a video wire service for TV and radio stations, newspaper websites, and online publications. Quote NewsNet, America’s free, over-the-air 24-hour news channel, has launched NewsNet Wire, a free content-sharing service allowing stations to access stories of regional and national interest — produced both by the NewsNet network and other NewsNet wire affiliates — while sharing their own video with other stations. “In this day and age, we’ve found that stations are looking for more content while dealing with tight budgets,” said Eric Wotila, NewsNet president. “That’s why we’re initially launching NewsNet wire as a service that’s absolutely free to stations affiliating with the service.” NewsNet Wire is designed to provide a source of video from across the country to independent stations which have limited options for video from outside their local area, and also aims to supplement any other sources of video that station groups or affiliates of other networks may be utilizing within their newscasts. YIKES! Honestly, if they realize that NewsNation isn't working on WGN America, I could see Nexstar eventually buying NewsNet, integrating their staffs (offering NewsNet staffers to relocate to Chicago to expand the NewsNation staff), and putting the network on Nexstar's stations and station websites (maybe even going the route of ABC News Live, NBC News Now and CBSN by inking deals with AVOD live streamers like Pluto TV, Xumo and Samsung TV Plus). It might be a bit of a cost-efficient way to expand NewsNation to a 24-hour offering, rather than what they could do by converting WGN America into a news channel. Plus, a company like Nexstar would be better able to distribute NewsNet to news-producing network affiliates and independent stations, compared to the current ownership, which has only been able to get WSWG as its only major-network-affiliated outlet in a sea of mostly low-power, diginet-only affiliates. (I won't count KTWO and KYUR since they don't carry the network, even though it produces their newscasts.) What exactly would Nexstar be acquiring in such a transaction? NewsNet has a staff of what, like 15 people of ...questionable qualifications and capabilities, and a cute little broadcast facility in the middle of Michigan. Not gonna happen, just let NewsNet die; the money has to dry up at some point. NewsNet has a tight 30 minute newscast all originating in Cadillac Michigan, relying on AP and other wire services. It's not leveraging anything that News Nation can't. News Nation can leverage thousands of stations (with any investment) to report news worthy of national attention. NewsNet, on the other hand, relies on the resources of AP, and is never ever having an exclusive. Basically, NewsNet is advert filler. Not gonna happen, just let NewsNet die; the money has to dry up at some point. NewsNet will be on and off various subchannels for years to come, never lasting more than a few years on any PSIP. When a better subchannel concept comes down, either at a lower cost for the same ratings or at the same cost for higher ratings, NewsNet will be replaced. Why do you think we see several 480i subchannels squeezed onto the frequency instead of a few really strong first-run subchannels in 1080i? Few people watch them. Providing a wider variety of mediocre, often syndicated programming ensures more ad blocks at standard pricing than discounted ad rates on high quality (and more expensive) subchannel programming. There are fewer big fish in a large pond, than several small fish in thousands of small ponds. DMA 135
Newsnet's NYC affiliate WJLP has dropped Newsnet, after (mercifully) being bought by Weigel. Prior owners PMCM (notorious for using an FCC loophole to move the station from Nevada to New Jersey) had crammed the RF with like 12 barely watchable subchannels, including right wing ones like Newsmax2 and Newsnet. Can't say I'll miss having access to Newsnet, especially now that Newsy provides a much higher quality OTA service in the DMA.
