tyrannical bastard 3951
They must be souping up the station in time for Gray to come in. Anyone thought of that? All Raycom has to do is "surrender" the license of WUAB....right? "Cle 43" or "CW 43" can simply become WOIO 19.2. Given Gray's desire to spinoff excess stations in advance of their merger with Raycom, it's highly doubtful. Rusty Muck 4374
Had the Sinclair-Tribune merger been cleared by now, I betcha Fox would be swooping in right now to buy WBNX and the MyTV affiliation away from WUAB (the latter for $1.98) and end up with a nifty duopoly in Cleveland. tyrannical bastard 3951
Another theory.... Retransmission Consent. If I'm reading the FCC file correctly, WBNX was classified as a "must carry" station all the way up to last year. Starting this year, they opted for retransmission Consent. If WBNX even balked at the cost of carrying the CW, it's almost certain that WUAB abd Raycom gave them a better deal. Plus, WUAB and WOIO have been on cable everywhere in the market forever while WBNX had to build up their viewership by "forcing" their way onto cable.... ColDayNews 438
WUAB was available on cable here in Columbus until 2011... largely to compensate for the market's lack of a UPN affiliate, which dated back to the mid-1990s...Time Warner added it to the lineup because WTTE served as UPN until 1998 when NBC traded WWHO and WLWC to Paramount in exchange for WVIT. WTTE aired UPN stuff in undesirable timeslots which pissed the network off... so the network asked Time Warner to pipe in WUAB until they could get an affiliate in the market. It served as Columbus' de-facto UPN affiliate, as WWHO was still tied down to The WB and didn't run UPN until weekends, which lasted until 2000. CLETVFan 367
Could WBNX lose any of the syndicated programming currently on the station? CLETVFan 367
And had WBNX continued with the CW, they would have probably been stuck with it! Maybe WBNX pulled a WPGA because they felt the CW programming wasn't family-friendly enough... (Back in the independent days, they actually edited mild swear words like "god" "hell" and "damn" out of shows.....) I remember the days. That editing ruined a lot of shows they carried. It was hard watching "Martin" without all the "damns." "Harry" is already going off the air, but what about the rest of the lineup? If they couldn't afford to carry the CW, then affording to keep the existing first-run syndicated inventory is absolutely in question (depending on how much is barter or not). Remember when CBS Television Distribution pulled all of their shows off of WLNE and moved them to WNAC in the span of a few hours? It definitely could happen here. Another reason may have been the dominant Cleveland Indians telecasts in the mid 90s. At one time, they were the highest rated in America. They went to cable in 2001 despite the objections of fans and even local politicians. Of course, with WUAB juggling both UPN and WB at the same time as this meant something had to give....and the WB left for WBNX in 1997. Had it not been for the New World deal that saw WJW go to FOX, WBNX could have remained the sleepy independent it used to be with old made-for-tv movies and ancient TV shows.... As for now, most of their daytime syndication is bottom of the barrel Byron Allen court shows...which is the equivalent of searching through the clearance section of Big Lots for DVDs.... Time Warner in Dayton didn’t add it until the mid 1990s - Dayton was served under Time Warner Mid-Ohio with Columbus until the early 2000s and being reorganized to Cincinnati. I recall getting WUAB, WCMH, WBNS and WWHO with Cincy and Dayton locals. tyrannical bastard 3951
The netlets and syndex rules were the beginning of the end for the smaller "superstations" like WUAB and WTTV. Given the lack of signals in the Columbus market, WUAB was more of a necessity. Digital TV, subchannels, and the end of free sports on TV contributed to it's demise. Meanwhile, the Ernest Angley ministry has been pumping out the "Ernest Angley Hour" for decades, even before WBNX and their purchase of Rex Humbard's former complex that they all own except for the unfinished tower.... I think it airs on one of the religious channels on Directv, and episodes can be viewed on YouTube. The entertainment value alone of the bad singing and lip-syncing is enough to watch.... T.L. Hughes 890
What would WUAB even put on the MyNetworkTV channel? That would be weird. I think WOIO/WUAB should just get W16DO and the rights to WBNX's license. Oh, I posted on the Winston page the new WBNX lineup after the CW leaves. 3pm will be filled with "Dateline" repeats, 8pm with a full hour of "The King of Queens," and two episodes of "Funny You Should Ask" will get a full hour at 9pm. It's entire latenight lineup will either move up, double up, or move around. All on the schedule page of WBNX's website (wbnx.com/schedule). Keep in mind also that WBNX has rights to a lot of Jack Hanna programming, including every single episode of Animal Adventures. Don't be surprised if that fills up Saturday mornings now that the CW will be on WUAB. According to the station's TitanTV page, the One Magnificent Morning lineup will be replaced by four extra episodes of Animal Adventures (from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m.), followed by an additional episode of the Canadian family drama Heartland (which WBNX already airs at 1:00 p.m. Sundays). TitanTV appears to have also unveiled WBNX's post-CW logo, which is just the existing one, eliminating the CW emblem and introducing a new slogan: Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/16532-wuab-taking-cw-away-from-wbnx/page/2/#findComment-207337 Share on other sites
