scrabbleship 429
Wasn't WUSA that station? They had weekend morning newscasts a few years back but at present do not have any. Correct. Even with WTTG expanding their weekend morning news, DC still lags behind even many medium markets on weekend mornings (10:00 too but that's more the fault of Tribune twiddling their thumbs and not hitching up with someone). Rusty Muck 4366
That's surprising...Gannett ADDING newscasts! WKYC is doing the same on weekends, come September. tyrannical bastard 3942
Here's a question....what's the largest market with the least amount of weekend morning shows (or none at all?) Mobile/Pensacola is pretty high up there since WEAR is the only station in the market to do a 6-7am show on Saturday and Sunday. WALA and WKRG did shows back in the 1990s, but later pulled them. You could pretty much do live shots at a 5K or a marathon every weekend morning if you wanted. There's a huge gulf in weekend news among Tribune stations. Some like WXMI and WJW have three or four hours of weekend morning news, and some like KTXL or KSWB have no news until 10:00 at night on weekends. Personally I prefer less since most weekend morning news is what we call "copy-flow" -- repeats of last night's stories and often one hour looks just like the next. If the stupid, worthless E/I rule didn't exist, I bet most stations would literally program their entire Saturday morning block as one extended newscast. (The one hour of E/I programming will supposedly move down to the 11am hour on Sunday). Of course, WKYC has had weekend morning newscasts continuously since 1991. I saw their lineup earlier this week, and I was wondering why they don't have an earlier newscast at the 6am hour. I guess they will fix that within the next month and some change.... And it's still the same setup today. So expanding it should not dilute that much to begin with. If the stupid, worthless E/I rule didn't exist, I bet most stations would literally program their entire Saturday morning block as one extended newscast. I wouldn't say every station. But I would suspect the bigger cities with big budgets would do it. Personally I prefer less since most weekend morning news is what we call "copy-flow" -- repeats of last night's stories and often one hour looks just like the next. Stations like WFTV have a 4-hour weekend show on both days (5-9am + a 12pm show), and WNEP have a 3 hour show (5-8am). I don't think it necessary to have news on at 5am hour on because you don't really have a heavy amount of viewers who are even up at that hour, unlike the weekdays. GoldenShine9 1513
The E/I rule needs to be abolished. Thundershock MN 169
Fox's massive local news expansion continues, and here's what's coming next: KTTV's noon news will be expanding to a full hour on June 30; WAGA will add another half-hour to its Saturday morning news (8:30am) on July 5; WHBQ adds a Sunday morning newscast on July 6; WTTG expands its weekend morning newscasts (two more Saturday hours and one more Sunday hour) on July 12 and 13; KMSP will have an hour-long Sunday 10pm newscast and a Sunday 10am hour beginning July 13; WJZY will debut several newscasts. A 6pm hour is programmed for July, while August will bring a 4:30-9 weekday morning news, 5-8 Saturday morning news and 5-9 Sunday morning news; On September 6, WTXF adds three more weekend morning hours, while KMSP adds a weekday 6pm newscast; and KTBC will return to 10pm five nights a week for the first time since 2000*, listed as coming in August. *Not a misprint. KTBC inexplicably had no 9pm newscast until 2000! ^The expansion on KMSP started a week later than originally planned. But, I think it's worth noting that of the additional hour and a half on Sundays it's not a straight expansion of the newscasts. The Sunday 10pm newscast will expand to a full half-hour...well, actually 35 minutes. The additional nighttime half-hour will be dedicated to a new Sunday Night sports show titled "Fox 9 Sports Now" running from 10:35pm-11:05pm. This replaces the 15 minute (actually, 20 minute) "Fox 9 Sports Primetime" that aired from 10:15pm-10:35pm on Sundays. The 15 minute versions of the former "Fox 9 Sports Primetime" will continue on Fridays (10:15pm-10:35pm) and Saturdays (9:45pm-10pm) however, they have been retitled with the new "Fox 9 Sports Now" name. The extra Sunday morning hour (10am-11am) isn't a straight expansion of the morning newscast. The Sunday edition of the "Fox 9 Morning News" will only be expanded a half hour from 10am-10:30am. The additional half hour from 10:30am-11am is being filled by a new show titled "The Reporters" hosted by Tom Lyden. "The Reporters" will feature more long-form stories, one-on-one interviews and interviews with reporters covering the "big stories" of the week. It's a pretty interesting program and definitely something different. Since it has now aired I feel safe posting a link. But, . TVIntheDesert 183
Sad news from the Phoenix TV front: Bill "Wallace" Thompson, one of the hosts of KPHO's iconic "Wallace & Ladmo" children's show that ran from 1954 to 1989, has passed away at 82. And, KPHO is still planning on moving out of 4016 N. Black Canyon, where the show was taped from 1971 to 1989, in what is now the "CBS 5 Newsroom," in the near future. Samantha 2895
I was born after Wallace and Ladmo ended, so I've never had the chance to watch a single episode of the show, but I don't think it's that hard to understand the importance of the show as an Arizona cultural institution. The Arizona Republic article is excellent, and so is the one from KPHO itself. Keeping in the Valley, I had posted a review of our two Spanish-language newscasts just two days ago on RadioDiscussions and mentioned KTAZ doesn't do weekend news. I didn't say it but I expected that to change pretty quickly—what I didn't expect is "pretty quickly" to be this weekend. 12 new staffers are being hired to support the new 4:30 and 10pm weekend newscasts; the anchor last worked in Monterrey. There's also mention of a new set, though I think it's already in use; the one I saw on the broadcast this week looked like it was very new and aesthetically reminded me of what's in use elsewhere in the network. Their earlier "set" wasn't even a set, just a duratrans. And staying with Telemundo: It's sort of old news, but it's worth posting because it's part of a trend. Back in May Telemundo Puerto Rico also added weekend news for the first time in a decade, brought forward from 2015 in response to the end of weekend news at Univisión there.
