WLOV will become the first non-Alaska property of Coastal Television, owner of the Fox and ABC affiliates in Anchorage. The sale is probably related to that of WTVA that was announced late last month; it also will mark a separation of WTVA from its longtime LMA partner. Follow-up time. WTVA & WLOV made amendments to their applications (posted this morning), that stated that they were willing to modify its JSA to reduce it to no more that 15%. The FCC went ahead today and conditionally granted both deals. But on the grant, they were ordered to send an amendes JSA document to the FCC, before closing. CircleSeven 1944 Posted January 7, 2015 Author Share Posted January 7, 2015 New M&A. This time we go back to Nebraska. It appears that Pappas wants to acquire KFXL outright, for $300K. As of now, Pappas operates KFXL under an LMA. But now its wants the station outright, and they're saying the station's coverage area doesn't overlap with its other properties out west. As of late, Pappas has been selling the remaining of its stations. So I'm thinking, them buying KFXL might attract buyers for the whole NTV cluster. It'll sale WQCW's translator station WOCW-LP to DTV America Corp. for get this, $100. DTV America Corp. owns a plethora of LP stations all across the country. That company comes up in TVNewsCheck's station trading roundups almost every week. Here is their portfolio. Seems like they're launching new MyNetworkTV and Telemundo affiliates in some places. What really makes it interesting is that KEVN does not have any subchannels. So that theory is out the window... For those not aware of the market, here's the rundown: NBC: KNBN (channel 21; brands as "NewsCenter 1") CBS: KCLO (channel 15; a satellite of KELO in Sioux Falls) ABC: KOTA (channel 3; the #1 station in the market by far) Fox: KEVN (channel 7) The CW: KWBH-LP (sister to KNBN; broadcasts on 21.2) MyNetworkTV: secondary affiliation on KNBN's .3? I think it's nothing other than overlap. KEVN operates its main signal on channel 7. Given the VHF operation, and the terrain in the region, it may simply be used to fill in some dark spots. Well 368 days after posting this (and their eventual plan to re-evaluate any deal with a sharing arrangement), the FCC just greenlighted the KCOY deal to VistaWest (the shell of NPG). With every English-language television station in town under common control, it's been a mess to try and get them on the same page in terms of facilities. Problems have included overruns from CBS sports events on KSWT; transferring KSWT's master control from Texas and bringing over all the CBS receiving equipment; the NBC satellite equipment; and sun outages. Also, the transition of KYMA and KSWT news to high definition is another hurdle. So where was KSWT being master controlled from? KDBC?? Follow up time! The previous KECY website was at "yourtvfamily.com". The KYMA logo is a redrawn version of the Sunbelt-era look and has about 15 years on it. The KSWT logo was similarly revised and is based on their redesign from a couple years ago. Looking at Facebook, the stations have new graphics (at least for weather) and even separate branding. It appears that University of Georgia is selling it's Toccoa, GA's non-commercial station WUGA-TV (formerly WNEG-TV) to Marquee Broadcasting for $2.5M ($2,500,002). So it looks like to me that this group is another one of those 'speculators', who are only in to buy so they can cash-in after auction time. Looking Wikipedia and found out that WUGA-TV/WNEG was CBS affiliate in MG era because WGCL wasn't available in that area. Why MG need to sell that station? Samantha 2878 Posted April 2, 2015 Share Posted April 2, 2015 In re WNEG/WUGA: It was always an odd station. It signed on as a local independent serving an area too small to support it. The station was barely afloat for the first half of the 90s. In fact, it was saved by the Fox switch, which saw CBS move from VHF to UHF in Atlanta. Spartan Telecasting converted it into a semi-satellite of WSPA, but it was always neglected. Media General never bothered to give the station a crescent logo and left it with its logo from Spartan Telecasting. In 2008, Media General sold the station to the University of Georgia. From 2008 to 2011, WNEG was operated as a commercial independent relying on America One and This TV. But in 2011, with advertising having taken a hit in the recession and the station no longer being a CBS affiliate, the university transferred it into their broadcasting unit with the radio station, changed the calls to WUGA-TV. As to the station's programming, after a review that found the station was too costly to operate, the university discontinued its local program production and began to air the PBS World Channel around the clock on July 1, 2014. The university has wanted to shed the station since at least November 2013. It's worth noting that the station has always had an uphill carriage fight stuck between two media markets. You need satellite to see it in the Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville market, and some cable systems and DirecTV offer it for Atlanta viewers. Marquee will have to choose which market it wants to operate in in the interim, but this is definitely a station with spectrum speculator potential near a major city. KTMW has been sold for $3,000,000 from Alpha Omega Communications to Serestar Communications Corp. Serestar's only television holdings seem to be KCSO, the Telemundo outfit for Sacramento, and KNSO in Fresno (operations only). Apparently NBCU didn't take back operation of that station after ZGS and gave it to this guy. The head of Serestar, Philip Wilkinson, apparently came from Entravision. Telemundo is in Utah on a network of LPTVs branded as Telemundo 10 (KULX), operated by Airwaves but with one of the translators owned by NBCU. There are no full-power stations in the system.
