Michael Murphy who was a backup pilot for SkyForce 10 died in a helicopter crash near New Castle Airport in Delaware on Thursday. The helicopter landed in a drainage ditch at Route 13 and Frenchtown Road short of the runway. The helicopter was a twin engine Eurocopter and Michael was conducting Approach Training after departing in from Atlantic City. Michael was the only person on board the medical helicopter operated by Metro Aviation. Metro Aviation was the operator of PennStar which supplied medical helicopter services for the University of Pennsylvania Medical System. Michael Murphy was 37 years old. My condolences go out to his family, friends and colleagues.4 points

KOAT also debuted the "rings" package in the fall of 2004. But their set refresh was in 2007. And then they switched to the "floating logo" package in the spring of 2008, a few months before they debuted their current set.2 points

I'm not so sure about FTVLive. He should know better than to attribute NBC Montana's ownership (and editorial judgment) to Sinclair (ownership change is pending, but Bonten still owns and operates the station.) Even the Huffpost article that started the feeding frenzy eventually appended a clarification that Sinclair hasn't taken over.2 points

Where they are healthy is in morning programming ('Studio 10' has built an audience from nothing, and with no lead in, to beat Nine's 'Today Extra' on occasions). Their early evening doesn't set the world on fire, but if you look at demos, their key hour of 'The Project' from 6.30 to 7.30 does very well, and that show is something that is always talked about as likely being copied by other networks (because it attracts exactly the right type of audience). In fact, they just exported the show to New Zealand, where they make their own version. In prime time, Ten has some big hits and some mild hits and then a lot of not much. Masterchef, Have You Been Paying Attention and Gogglebox all win their time slots. I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here is not as huge, but it's still a hit. The strength of those shows - particularly the game show HYBPA and Gogglebox - is that they have Ten stamped all over them.. they are very funny and cheap and irreverent (like a Japanese panel comedy game show) and the show just built and built from such a low base, but Ten stuck with it. And, now, in this era of downloads and streams and TV dying, these topical, funny, news-related comedy shows are proving to be what young people like to watch and Tweet about at the same time. So there is still hope for Ten. As for news, Ten is not in the same league as Seven and Nine, but, in reality, it abdicated this responsibility when it took its news to 5PM in 1992. For now, Eyewitness News is STILL their highest-rating program on many nights (or second-highest after another news program, The Project 7PM). The dilemma for Ten is if they cut their news operation further, they risk a massive drop in their 5-6PM audience. For example, a networked newscast from SKY (as some have speculated) would be a disaster. They will have to come up with a very good plan to both save money and keep their news strong in the early evening. Here is an example of 'Studio 10' changing gears and going into Breaking News mode for daytime coverage of the Manchester Bombing:2 points

So WGN here in Chicago is gonna be undergoing some big changes later on today, they're debuting a new set and a new logo, and I figured I may as well post some of these classic WGN videos from the 2000s. I found an entire 40 minutes of WGN Morning News from March 2004 (description says 2001, but he's mistaken. They only started using that logo and graphics around December 2002/January 2003, plus one of the events they described in the headlines was definitely in late 2003). Robin was still doing traffic and rocked a Tony Montana-style suit, and they still talked via satellite to Sam Rubin of KTLA. You can where they do the 8:30 am intro and read the news. At that point in the video, there's a graphics error in the headlines and the wrong clips are shown with the stories being read. Also, the song in the background during the headlines after the intro that they still sometimes use in the mornings isn't a stock music piece or something that they made in-house. It's the extended version of ! When I was a kid, I figured it was just their own news music. "Girls on Film" is used during some Dean Richards segments, so I guess someone at WGN is a big Duran Duran fan. While we're on the subject of WGN, I think this is the best open music they've ever used, and I wish they would have kept this tune when they redid the music packages in 2007 and 2014. And the Noon/9pm variant (complete with their even older logo) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gP-vQFpyJd82 points

Tracey Rogers VP/GM of WMC5/Memphis will head down the road for the same job at WKRN2/Nashville. Betty Nguyen will move over to PIX11/NYC Morning News. http://pix11.com/2017/05/16/betty-nguyen-joins-wpix-as-anchor-of-pix11-morning-news/ Newsblues.com has a new owner; Rick Iler former news director at KSHB, KARK and slew of other stations. Here's the article from newsblues.com NewsBlues has a new owner. Rick Iler, the former news director at Scripps-owned KSHB-41-NBC in Kansas City (Market #33), Nexstar's KARK-4-NBC in Little Rock (Market #57), Gannett's KCEN-6-NBC in Temple, TX (Market #87), and Nexstar's KSNF-16-NBC in Joplin, MO (Market #151), has acquired the legacy TV news insider website NewsBlues. Terms of the deal were not disclosed (because it's none of your damn business), but I can tell you (and this is just between us) it was more than an 18-pack of Busch Light and less than a 2007 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano. "This is really a dream come true for me," said Iler. "NewsBlues has been a staple of broadcast news for nearly 20 years and I have been reading it since the beginning. Having the opportunity to continue a great media broadcast tradition is an honor." Iler says his vision for the future is to refresh the site while staying true to its iconic, subversive brand. "I am very excited for some of the changes people will see in the near future with NewsBlues. It will have some of the old mixed in with a new aggressive look, style and feel. I think people are going to love it." For the immediate future, your Surly Editor® will continue to write and produce the daily newsletter through Friday, May 26, at which point Ilerand his staff will take over production. Initially, the website will remain pretty much the same...sort of a NewsBlues Lite. But, later this summer, the website's look and feel will change dramatically. There are big things ahead. What does this mean for you? Your current NewsBlues membership will remain in place, and we will soon begin selling extended memberships again of 3-and-6 months. The valuable SourceBook will continue. Mrs. B's Grammar Yammer will live on in re-runs. Personally, I look forward to working with Rick and his crew and will continue in an advisory role for the foreseeable future. Good things are ahead. Stay tuned. (You can reach out to Iler at .)2 points

I don't think CNN would license their graphics package in an area that they cover and the channel is available widely. Actually no, they wouldn't license the package at all as it's a worldwide brand and available almost everywhere. They wouldn't want to dilute the coverage or make it look like a channel is affiliated with them. I do believe CNN does license individual illustrations and animations.1 point

SagamoreHill was assigned to acquire KASW after Sander spun-off KTVK & KMOV to Meredith (KASW would eventually go to Nexstar). SagamoreHill had nothing to do with St. Louis.1 point

Couldn't agree more especially since,it seems they are taking a harder news approach. However I remember when Muller came back to PIX he said he would never do mornings again1 point

Marissa Torres (yes, the Traffic Girl and anchoring is in her resume) anchored the PIX News @ 5 on Saturday 5/27. Presumably she did the 10 PM as well. I'm Happy Scott is going back to sports. I like his style of presenting it. I watch the PM news more than the AM news.1 point

I feel like there's been a dry spot in new classic video lately! Hopefully those with ways to capture can scour for VHS tapes on Craigslist, eBay, their local thrift shop, etc. Always cool finding new stuff.1 point

KFOR-TV intros since 2008: 2009: 2011: (The only change from 2009 to 2011 was "Chopper 4" was replaced by "Bob Moore Chopper 4" 2014: Brian Lee instead of saying "You're watching NewsChannel 4 at Ten" at that point says "You're watching NewsChannel 4 at Ten, The News Leader." 2016: 2017: New graphics plus KFOR went back to the "Oklahoma's NewsChannel 4" moniker that they used from 1997 until 20081 point

I'm speculating here but Lawrence O'Donnell missed The Last Word three days this week. The first was on Monday where he was in Boston taping an interview with Senator Elizabeth Warren but was bumped for the Manchester Bombing breaking news. The interview played out on Tuesday with him hosting from Boston. On Wednesday they had Ari Melber fill in and Thursday Joy Reid filled in. He tweeted that he was in Boston covering the Harvard Graduaton and Zuckerbergs speech: And this Friday night he is broadcasting from Boston. He also missed other days during May sweeps with Joy and Ari as his primary fill in. This seems highly unusual for someone with a contract expiring on June 4. Could this be a power play by Lawrence to show the MSNBC executives how his absences affect ratings? Or could this be MSNBC testing the waters to see if the ratings hold for Ari and Joy to see if the show could survive without Lawrence?1 point

If I remember right, though, that was Monday-Friday for the win. If you looked at all seven days WPVI still came out on top.1 point

If the FCC changes the rules for Sinclair those same rule changes apply to other station groups too... Just sayin' before we head down the "CONFLICTS!!!!!!!!!!!11!" path yet again.1 point

I swear to god, how that gross POS thing still exists? Oh yeah, douchebaggery rules. Newsflash: IT'S. NOT. FUNNY. EVER. I just feel like reporters have to prepare to counterattack perps who do this. Like throw a dart at them or shoot them bullets. Stations gotta gather for plans to stop this nonsense. Youtube clips of these 'incidents' encourage more of this douchebaggery.1 point

That's still a thing? Wow, we're on a roll. All I'm waiting for now is someone to go flashing on the Fox 32 plaza when they do an outdoor segment on GDC.1 point

I'm not Lawrence's biggest fan, but it would be stupid to get rid of him. He's getting high ratings and letting him go would create hysteria on the part of MSNBC's viewers because they'd view it as MSNBC being too afraid to stand up to the administration. I hope all this noise is simply a negotiating ploy1 point
