Well I posted something a few weeks back, because FTVLIVE.com was hearing whispers that Cox "might" sell Boston 25 and they moved the ND from Boston to Charlotte. Speculation on several things. etc.3 points

Some rare things from WSM-TV & WTVF, as well as WBBM & WMAQ are in this compliation, including a WTVF open from 1982/83 with the rare non-NBC version of Mike Randall's NewsCenter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=UypvRGMWlME;m=23;s=513 points

the Koplars, who owned KPLR at the time, were never interested in selling until the late 90s when they sold it to Jamie Kellner, it also had the Cardinals and Blues that would have pre-empted a lot of ABC programming, KDNL had just formed a news department before it switched to ABC under a local company that $inclair later bought2 points

what about CBS, FOX, or NBC affiliates in the top 100 with fewer followers? are there any ABC (or CBS, NBC, FOX) affiliates where the CW or MNTV affiliate ranks higher than them? $inclair claims KDNL is ranked 5th, below CW affiliate KPLR, it had the Cardinals and Blues games before most of them moved to cable, doesn't have any sports now2 points

Investigative reporter Sasha Jones is leaving WMC. "She's off for big, exciting things," the station says... but no word yet on where, exactly.2 points

Sinclair is a big ABC affiliate, plus ABC hasn't been a player in St. Louis since the affiliation went from KTVI to KDNL back in 1995 (prior to Sinclair owning KDNL)...that's nearly 23 years now. ABC essentially not mattering in St. Louis has become the status quo. The ratings and potential money ABC has lost over the years because of a lousy St. Louis affiliate apparently hasn't mattered too much. To my knowledge, ABC has never made even a halfway serious attempt to find a new St. Louis affiliate. In defense of ABC, the station deck in St. Louis has been stacked against them: No way KMOV or KSDK were going to switch; KPLR was owned by Acme for a number of years and tied to the WB; KPLR became the CW affiliate and Tribune is heavily tied to that, etc. Add to that, if the Sinclair-Tribune deal goes down, ABC will be dealing with Sinclair anyway. ABC's best hope would be to end up on KPLR with the CW being sent elsewhere. The only real alternative outside of Sinclair would be for ABC to strike up a deal with Weigel, who just bought KNLC and made the station a full-power Me-TV affiliate. I really can't think of a logical reason why ABC's ratings would be better on KNLC than KDNL. ABC apparently tried harder to get off of KTVI back in late 1988 or so when the network was upset about KTVI's lousy ratings at the time (plus ditching the 6PM local news for "Geraldo"). ABC had a meeting with Koplar (then-owner of KPLR) in New York that was supposedly about the technology of interactive TV, but the subject of an ABC affiliation for KPLR was apparently on the table. ABC didn't realize just how bad things were going to get just a few short years later.2 points

Mike was in the open. John B. Wells does the Lincoln-Mercury commercial before. As long as Tegna owns this website now, it seems right that I should post classic clips from one of it's stations: A nightime version of their 1979 open, this would have have to been no earlier than 1982, as this was after they moved to their current studios: From September 1983, the first generation of "Clearly The One/The One For You": An updated open from April 1985, this was after they bought a chopper:2 points

So was ABC considering dumping KTVI before the 1995 switch? When it was announced in the 1990s just like the CBS affiliates jumping to find new homes. Did ABC consider KPLR at first in 1994, because I'm sure when ABC saw that this would happen and they could of bought KPLR like CBS did with Atlanta and Detroit. Did KTVI really dump 6pm news to run Geraldo? Also the Party Machine didn't last a season.1 point

A KPNX Action News Digest from November 1985, complete with some quick teases, a station ID with the We're Going Where You're Going theme and in the middle, a radio promo for KKLT "K-Lite 99 FM" featuring Lisa Malay. Yes, the Lisa Malay that later became KPNX's station voice (and was brought in to do other Gannett stations like KTHV):1 point

Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere but WSOC in Charlotte got a new news director about three weeks ago. Mike Oliveira joins the station from WFXT in Boston where he was the news director during the Cox takeover. Before that he was at WPXI in Pittsburgh. Inside sources tell me that Oliveira has been a welcome change and is bringing fresh ideas over the stagnated previous management who apparently wasn't too open to new ideas and change. The rumor mill is that WSOC might be getting a new set in the next year to replace the BDI set that premiered in 2012. WSOC also dropped Bill Ratner as their VO guy and replaced him with John Cramer (the guy who is the main voiceover guy on the EntertainmentStudios court shows). It's an interesting choice but having heard his voice on WSOC, it actually works well.1 point

Wow, this is absolutely fascinating. I think a contributing factor is that St. Louis has very few full-power TV stations compared to other markets. Commercially, St. Louis has just seven stations — a very low number for a market of its size that I've never completely understood. WRBU was only a commercial independent/netlet outlet between 2003 and 2013, and it only signed on in 1989. KNLC was religious for the longest time. That meant that there were just few places to shop around and stations had a lot of leverage. Weigel's conversion of KNLC to Me-TV is perhaps the most exciting change in the market in quite some time. If ABC wanted to leave KDNL, it only would have KPLR or KNLC as options. Consider that at the time of the affiliation switch in 1994, Koplar cited KPLR's sports programming as the reason not to affiliate with ABC. Koplar decided that the Cardinals and the Blues were worth more to their station than ABC and potential disruption of those relationships. As to local news, I want to point something out that is forgotten. When KDNL began local news in January 1995 (under the name "News 30 Now" and at 9pm), they were the first TV news operation to set up shop in the market since 1959. That's a long time, 36 years. And we're already at 23 years since another attempt was made at building a new TV newsroom in St. Louis.1 point

WOWK 13 New set alert. Nexstar’s WOWK 13 Huntington/Charleston WV has received the standard Nexstar CBS affiliate set and graphics makeover. It debuted with the 11 PM newscast. There were some technical glitches and a mix of old and new music. But otherwise a huge, huge, huge improvement over what they had under West Virginia Media Holdings http://www.wowktv.com/weather/crazy-weather-snow-to-70s-and-our-new-look-stormtracker-13-sunday-night-forecast_20180402033009/10925191871 point

Bizarre promo for Canal 13's news service from 1993, which shows a homeless man sleeping in an alley covered with paper sheets while being ignored by a TV news van. The promo begins at 0:39 and ends at 1:30. I hope this commercial didn't affect the credibility of the station, which was #1 in news back then.1 point

Agreed! I’m not sure where they found her! But her delivery is cringing; and, she should not be the primary fill-in for Bill. I’d prefer Strehl.1 point
