Alan Krashesky and Cheryl Burton are holding down the fort on the WCIU newscast tonight. It's definitely a funny holiday weekend quirk when the A-team is available, but everyone else is off.5 points

It was more of a case of trying to get back to #1. They were tying/beating WTVT in 1985-86 and then ratings fell and they hired Terry Cole as ND in late summer 1988. It appears, based on what I've read, that Cole hired Shapiro from WTVT with the express intention of breaking into WTVT's servers. They also broke into Frank Magid's data. It was discovered in early 1989. At one point, a folder full of WTVT's personnel files was found behind a storage shed at WTSP's studios. Speculation is that other WTSP employees knew what was going on, but nobody other than Cole and Shapiro were actually committing the act. The state could have seized WTSP under anti-racketeering laws but the ownership agreed to pay out a hefty settlement and donate to the state attorney's office.5 points

In this 1984 clip, WLS is using a blue backdrop because of the election, so the similarity to the '90s look is even more apparent:3 points

He did work for CNN when he came out and revealed that he was abused in high school by a priest. Then I think he went to work for The Insider but then supposed nude photos of him came out and he didn’t appear on the show but I believe they continued to pay him. Since he didn’t appear on the show makes me think the photos may be really him. Then he started filling in for NBC and MSNBC for a year or two before getting a regular gig.3 points

WOOOWWWWW.... *mind blown* Say hello to Minneapolis-St. Paul! Btw if you’re wondering the first thing I do when I make news open compilations is go through ALL of NewsActive3’s compilations and take notes on where a specific station open is in there (ex: WBAL’s 1995 open pops up in Various Newscast Opens Part 21 at 6:25.) This can take up to several weeks.3 points

To prove that TV weather is more accurate and more friendly than internet or smartphone weather. It's one of the few beaches left where the weather battle can still be fought. Root for them...or they may just be gone soon and replaced by some AI app named "Doris"..3 points

Thanks. This isn't my regional specialty, so I didn't have a lot of context. It makes sense given when Foulkes started in TV weather that he didn't have a met seal. Looks like the Turn To package was in by the end of '85.3 points

1984 would sound right. This must have been used for only a couple years, and then “Turn To” and “Spirit of Hampton Roads” must have come out in 85. I think this new unknown theme is related to their “For People Like You” campaign of the time. The KHOU/WISH Corinthian theme was still being used in 1984 after the Belo purchase, as evidenced here at the end... Joe Foulkes was actually chief weathercaster... no meteorology degree there. The Daily Press covers the Virginia Peninsula, which is Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg. The Virginian-Pilot covers Norfolk, Va Beach, etc. Now Tronc owns both of them so they’re one step closer to merging into a regional super-paper3 points

I think the WVEC clip is from early 1985! Roger Cawthon was named WVEC's sports director in June 1984 after working there two years, replacing Brad Face. But it's Len Randolph's presence on the 6pm that is interesting. He was the weekend met until around February, when he was moved to the 6 to replace Joe Foulkes. (Foulkes, who had already been the chief met for 20+ years, remained on the 5:30 and 11pm shows as he began his transition toward retirement, which he completed in 1988.) In Newport News at least, the school budgeting process seemed to take shape in March (unfortunately the Daily Press didn't cover Norfolk schools for some reason), so my guess is that this would be from March 1985. Randolph must not have been at WVEC that long. He had previously worked at KENS and KUTV, and by the end of the eighties, he was back in Salt Lake as the weekend met at KSL (apparently he's still there!). ——— This KYTV promo from 1986 features a mix of mid-80s graphics and by-now-out-of-date music:3 points

WLS, a very conservative station, used that KABC-style setup for ages -- since 1984 (I believe). Only the backdrop and the shape of the desk changed slightly over all those years. I like their early '80s set better:2 points

And what’s odd is that this open debuted during the Gannett era - in fact the waning days of the Gannett era, as you had posted in the Discovered composers & publishers of music themes thread: “WLVI: Channel 56 is a last-minute entrant in the fall set-remodeling contest. Its "10 O'Clock News" gets a makeover Oct. 25 - which, not-so-coincidentally, is the same day WSBK-TV (Ch. 38) begins broadcasting a WBZ-produced 10 p.m. newscast. Look for a new anchor desk, an expanded background with brighter colors and new computer-controlled lighting. The station will also modify its graphics design to match the set changes.” This was from October 1993, and Gannett would sell the station the next month, finalizing the sale to Tribune in 1994. This video also shows proof (17:37):2 points

I’ll raise you an ATV, Hulkie. For a time, this was used to open up the broadcast day in the Midlands. (Two different sequences, but the same song. While the first one is focused on two children and an adorable dog, the second one is endless aerial shots of the region.) It would’ve lasted a long time, had the Independent Broadcasting Authority interfered. (“NO LYRICS!”) But the song is...you get the idea.2 points

Gary Radnich is retiring at KRON after a stellar and amazing 34 years. He plans to remain until the end of August and they'll air a tribute show on him on September 1st but will continue to do his sports radio show at 680 KNBR. http://www.kron4.com/news/bay-area/gary-radnich-retires-after-34-years-at-kron/12497027892 points

This wouldn’t be the first Belo station that used an image for only about a year. KXTV used its supposed 1986 theme from 1984 to 1985, when they switched to Spirit. EDIT: Check out a KMGH promo for Robin Robinson (yes, her) from 1983 at 10:42:2 points

Sometimes it's good to pass it on, since one of our friends here posted up the vids, it's time to share the favor: A rare look at THE Ten O'Clock News (formerly The News at Ten) off WLVI-TV56 in Boston in 1995, Week 3 of the then-new WB network.1 point
