  2. Problem is Sinclair ain't going to get anywhere near what they paid to acquire the RSNs in the first place. Plus Ripley probably would rather let the RSNs bankrupt Sinclair by doing nothing and playing hardball with MVPDs a very common thing for Sinclair to do so as seen on numerous occaisions throughout this thread than fixing the business by upgrading the programming quality. Sinclair has failed to understand its not just rebranding of a certain property (such as the RSNs) what matters is content and as the late Summer Redstone would say, content is king. COVID proved that the RSNs in general aren't worth a single nickel to pay for them.

  4. Three small M&A closings tonight. Gray has completed its Odessa acquisition of MeTV station KWWT & Cozi TV outlet KMDF-LD. More on that in the Gray thread. Religious broadcaster TCT has completed its acquisition of Fresno station KAIL from Aperio Communications. No word on if the MyNetwork affiliation or syndication programming on 7.1 or the subchannels will be kept, post-closing. Weigel has completed its acquisition of WHCT-LD from Venture Technologies Group. This is the first time MeTV is carried in the majority of the state of Connecticut. WZME was the last MeTV affiliate in the state prior to 2015. But it only served parts of it (primarily Fairfield County). MeTV & the sister diginets were launched on WHCT on Wednesday (9/30).

  5. At least had the Royals invested in say a 20 to 30 percent stake in Fox Sports Kansas City things would've been okay at least on the Royals side (at least Sinclair would've still owned a pretty significant chunk in FSKC too) Teams such as the Dodgers has proven that being their own middle man doesn't help get deals done, all we have to do is look at how long it took SNLA to finally be on AT&T.

  6. It is easier said than done. The teams don't want the hassle of negotiating directly with video providers, hence why the RSN/Parent company handles that . Also, the team can request that the RSN make as many deals possible with all parties involved, but ultimately that responsibility lies with the RSN. If the team is so adamant to have its games widely available, and the video providers are not on-board 100% with the fees being charged, then one side will have to give in. Will the team/RSN accept a lower payment in exchange for distribution, or will the video provider decline to pay for the channel? There's not gray area-- they either air the games or they don't. Also, a majority of the sports teams have an equity stake in the RSN's. No matter how bad things get, don't expect them to magically disappear and have all content migrate strictly to online platforms.

  7. Unfortunately, the cost of airing sports is so expensive, that subscriber and retransmission fees are such an enormous factor as the cost of sports has shot through the roof. I was devastated when WUAB lost the Indians in 2001. But it was one of the last stations to do their own telecasts (with an increasing slate of Fox Sports games), and what else was to be expected when the Dolan Family bought the team from Dick Jacobs? Larry Dolan helped start STO in 2006, and they owned Cablevision. They ended up selling their Cleveland-area clusters to Adelphia, whose territory became part of TWC in their bankruptcy collapse. Sports just needs to break away and let those who want to pay for it get it. The system is broken and is long overdue for a reality check that COVID-19 has certainly helped with.

  8. How was it a "big mistake" for the Royals to re-sign with FSKC? The team still gets paid its rights fees, even when providers drop the network. It's Sinclair and the rest of the ownership group taking all the risk regarding carriage. As for the Royals having their own RSN, been there done that. It lasted four years before going dark and signing with FSKC.

  10. They didn't say they're going to use "8.1" on the UHF allotment. You cannot assume its going to be 8.1, because they haven't announce what virtual channel they're going to use. As long as they still own WFAA on RF 8, it's still going to be VC 8.1 on WFAA. It could be 8.4 or 8.8, etc., but it's too early to tell what VC they're going to use on the UHF once the KMPX deal is completed. Now Estrella's option agreement to get VHF 8 (and its just the VHF assets (antenna/transmitter, not WFAA's studio or programming), that transaction will come after the KMPX transaction is completed. And that option will last for five years after closing. And then once that option transaction get exercised and completed, you'll likely see a callsign and virtual channel swap. Post-Option Closing: WFAA - VC 8.1 - RF 30 - Decatur - Tegna - ID 73701 KMPX - VC 29.1 - RF 8 - Dallas - Estrella - ID 72054 So Tegna is paying Estrella to go on the UHF allotment, and the Option price for Estrella is $5M. So Estrella is essentially pocketing $14M to move to VHF (should they exercise on that option). This was similar to the KNSO/KGMC facility swap that happened earlier this year when Telemundo swap sticks with Cocola, getting Telemundo off VHF 11 to UHF 27.

  11. RSN's are only good for live sports and team-centric shows, All other content is a dumping ground for stuff that few people care about, like golf tours and air racing, along with low-budget documentaries. Move it all to streaming services and just focus on live sports. All RSN's are a big waste outside of live sports.

  12. Yeah, you're right. WLBT Is on 30. 28 was WDAM's former allotment. WLBT's former RF 7 antenna moved to Hattiesburg for WDAM to use.
