  1. KXRM in Colorado Springs had some Twitter problems tonight (the tweets, indeed, the station's account are all gone).

  2. The better-performing newscasts on the non-CBS stations aren’t going anywhere. That goes for WPCW’s 10pm news and all newscasts on KCAL 9. I’m pleasantly surprised that WSBK kept their 8pm, which makes sense since they’re the only Boston station carrying news at that hour.

  3. Two comments: 1) It seems like they are going about this backwards. I think you should start with local and then cut over to CBS NewsCentral. 2) What a jarring difference in picture quality between the national feed and what they have in Seattle. Is CBS really that cheap? Can't they send over a used camera from one of their other stations?

  4. RE: that 2016 open in there that is inspired by the spinning world 80s and statue of liberty mid 80s opens - happened to run into Lester and his wife on the street and told him kudos to whomever did that work - it was really classy, approachable, identifiable work. He was appreciative and liked it too. Wish the open lasted longer.

  6. These graphics are so clean and sleek. WABC needs them ASAP. WABC quite frankly has the worst graphical presentation of all the O&Os. KGO and KABC look the best IMO.

  7. Yeah, I also think Elliot Rodriguez stinks. He can’t hold a candle to Antonio Mora. Honestly, I’m asking how the hell he is still on CBS4. Must be Nepotism. M-Fin’ Nepotism. The moment he’s finally gone, likely by retirement, I’ll start watching CBS 4 again.

  8. WBRZ reporter Earl Phelps will do his last story July 24. He's leaving after six years at the station to join the Delta News complex in Greenville, Miss.

  9. I'm not liking the trend of filling programming gaps with news news news to the point of fluff and repeats.

  10. The NOW aka NewsCentral 2 REPLACED the 9 pm WCBS newscast on WLNY in DMA 1. There is no other newscast on WLNY.

  12. I'm guessing the graphics team is still getting used to the new lower thirds because that's a lot of empty space for the text to be that condensed. Not really liking the extra large logo, but that's on par with the national network design so it's unsurprising that local is trying to mimic the general style.

  13. Wow. How early are these newscasts being recorded? Karen recently moved to a “family friendly” shift, doing the 11a and 4p newscasts for KTVT. The whole point was to be able to have dinner with her kids. (She did evenings for years, before moving to mornings.) So they must be recording these in the middle of the afternoon. Like 2p or 3p.

  14. Whether or not we are, I’d rather ask myself Not whether America really needs all these newscasts, but rather whether Americans WANT them? Are Americans really asking for the end of syndication as we know it?

  15. However, I still think that whatever new “O&O package” comes out will be extremely similar to this one, especially now it’s seeing more use on-air and not just online.

  16. There’s a bit of personality at WCBS to be fair - Marcia Kramer certainly adds a local flavor but overall I tend to agree with you. - WABC’s vibe is an unusual combo of familial and tabloid. As much as I dislike the increased opinion segments, visual mess, and Disney corporate synergy, it still feels like the default for me. Coverage all across the Tri-State - they go all out, highest use of copters too. -WNBC is straight to the point but has the appeal of local-born talent and 30 Rock gravitas. Coverage is a little more focused on the boroughs, with a strong Jersey presence. Collaboration with WNJU reporters has been great, providing coverage into communities overlooked by everyone else. -WPIX targets straphangers and the NY1 demo. Used to have the Daily News connection which though diminished still feels present. -WNYW is a bit dull but I think has been targeting a tone similar to WABC’s tabloid/human interest take. At least they’re coming up with interesting branding like “The Noon” -WCBS is just…there. It’s visually polished but the tone is wooden and really feels cookie-cutter. Editorially there’s an overemphasis on Westchester and Long Island. I feel like they were stronger when they could lean on the Always-On WCBS 880 / 1010 WINS synergy, but that’s faded. The reporters and anchors are all…fine? But the overall vibe is just generic and not targeted to the market.

  18. The graphics package on the NOW newscasts are not the upcoming CBS O&O graphics. They’re still a work in progress.

  19. Because it’s a left wing network and Sinclair is not . Anyways, They are just trying to get ad revenue that’s all this is . I don’t see why they just don’t make it a regular local newscast live to tape , with maybe one or two of live reports edited in to make it seem live. All the back and fourth take WFOR for example ,Tom Hansen in NY talking national then Elliot Rodriguez doing a cut in from Miami then having WFORs meteorologist then a CBS national meteorologist is just plain stupid . If they want New York to make the newscast they should have them do the whole thing . It won’t take that long (similar to radio because they won’t have to wait for reports to air and commercials, they will be able to tape the whole newscast in 15-20 min .Then have a producer insert the local reports. Then pull a WNYW and just tell a feel good story at the end and say good night . Cheap and simple but of course CBS is always ass backwards.

  20. Here is a real find! WFLA’s coverage of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge Disaster from May 9, 1980 from retired main anchor Bob Hite’s secondary Youtube channel. It is confirmed WFLA used Part of Your Life through 1980.

  21. Or maybe, JUST MAYBE, they're finally adding a 5th meteorologist, even if she doesn't carrying a regular show assignment. Besides, as much as we love speculating, there's no reason to not take the chief at his word, for now.

  23. 6:00 is an understandably preferable slot as it's not too early or late of a shift and it's the lead in to the evening news. I like how strong of a role Bill Ritter still plays (despite some of his on air commentary) given that once anchors reach a particular age their role slows down. I actually had no idea Ritter was was in his 70s until he started graying. To bring it back to WNBC, I hope to see Chuck at 6 for as long as possible!

  24. Bill Ritter does the 5, 6 and 11pm. He actually added the 5pm to his schedule just 3 years ago when Diana Williams retired. He’s done the 11pm since 1999 and the 6pm since 2001. Bill Beutel was a phased retirement plan. Stepped down from 11pm in 1999, stepped down from 6pm in 2001 and then fully retired in 2003. With Chuck, yes, it seems like they’re just letting him hang on to the 6pm until he’s ready to call it quits on his own terms.

  25. Chuck and Sue were WNBC; and NYC Broadcast Legends. Ever since that duo was broken up; WNBC hasn’t been the same. Some say it’s Karma, But they just haven’t found the right anchor teams with that unmatched chemistry that Chuck, Sue, Len, Al Roker later (Janice Huff) had that made them #1.

  26. A lot of different stories and pieces of information out there in this. What we do know is she was initially offered a buyout in 2008 and refused. Sometime after that, she signed a new three year deal set to expire in 2012 and it was made clear then that it would be the last contract WNBC would offer her. She hoped WNBC would change their mind along the way but in the final year if the contract when no renewal talks were offered, she began telling close friends it was her last year at NBC. She was being paid upwards of $2 million a year (some estimates say $5 million) and, in her final year, was anchoring just one 30 minute broadcast. Some reports say she seemed to have lost interest in the job, started phoning it in and NBC execs were not thrilled. Other reports say it’s just a classic case of a woman not being able to age gracefully on television. As we can see, her coanchor of the same age is still with the station in a high profile role.

  27. Sheba and Sibila were pretty decent anchors, and I though Sheba was good with Tom Llamas, but Sue Simmons didnt need to go. Sue should still be with Chuck weeknights at 6 (and maybe even 7) up to this day. Chuck has not had a stable partner to this day. Add to that anchor lineup these days is pretty scattered with Natalie and David individually anchoring 14 different newscasts. Out of curiosity, why was just Sue axed and not Chuck aswell? I remember Sue kept saying in her last broadcast "I hope to find employment elsewhere", which made it clear she did not want to go. Overall that was a major NY broadcasting blunder along with eighty-sixing Jim & Kaity on PIX weeknights.

  30. WTOK (and the Meridian, MS market) is finally getting a midday newscast! Their only competition is WMDN/WGBC which only puts out a 6 and 10pm newscast, as well as a 9pm on WGBC's Fox station. All former Waypoint stations, so these are produced from afar. At least Coastal Television hasn't put their mark on these stations....yet.
