  1. I think this thread is losing focus and becoming a list. In the end, an employee was let go for using a slur about a coworker at work (presumably) to another coworker. We can do better than trying to figure out whether the woman deserved to be slurred by her coworker at work.

  7. I don’t think they will use call sign as branding. It’s a new news operation and they don’t think people will recognize it from call signs.

  8. One of the plus sides of an anchor suddenly leaving a station is you get to see different faces in new places. At WABC, it’s been nice to see Sandra Bookman and David Novarro in the morning on some days.

  9. IMO it's better they don't start the newscast at 4 AM, at least from the talent's point of view. I like that they rerun the 11pm broadcast at that hour. If this pushes Sherri Shepherd down one hour hopefully it knocks Byron Allen's fake Justice with Judge Mablean off the schedule---(even though I love her). It's strange that a market with such leisure and culture as Miami/Ft Lauderdale doesn't have a lightweight morning newscast. Even the 9am hour on WPLG and WFOR are straight news. (Not counting Deco Drive or 6 in the Mix). Looking at the quieter overlapping market West Palm, Fox 29 is straight news from 7-9. WPEC and WPBF are also strictly news at nine. Thats five hard newscasts at 9am in South Florida.

  10. And now they've added a super tacky "News for All America" tagline on the screen not in one place, but in two places! Both taglines alternate with the channel logo and the show logo. The taglines seem to appear once every minute or so.

  11. There could be a thousand reasons why someone would move to a local station from a national one that don’t involve pay. When it comes down to it these are still people and despite the minor fame it works exactly the way it would in literally any other job.

  12. Funny you mentioned that; my first thought was “thank God it’s 10am and not 4am.” I know it’s become conventional for stations to start at 4 or 4:30am, but is there really that much of an audience there? Granted, most people are at work by 10am, but you can at least get stay at home moms/workers and people in waiting rooms to watch you.

  13. That may be it. Of course, I'm in no rush to see that man go. He's part of my childhood and he can still go. Let him break the record and then ride off the sunset after. He's only doing one newscast anyways per weekday...

  14. That has to be a typo or something. Magnes is WSVN’s GM. 12 hours a day is certainly overkill, but if any stations are going to follow the KVVU model of filling up more than half the day’s schedule with news, it’s these two.

  15. People who work nights? I know if I was working nights, I'd prefer early morning news over infomercials any day.

  17. They could've noted that before they made the music final, and get a custom cut then. When you go with random themes based on 'vibes' you lose the trust of those who build the newscast out and the average viewer who is just over every time period having to lead off with doom and gloom because of one guy's decision to be out of compliance.

  18. I don’t know that it’s fair to through WCBS in the same category as KCBS and WBBM. I think they’ve worked hard at recovering from the 1996 massacre and having become a competitor again. The new music may work for some stations, but it’s too light for New York. It’s why WABC has stuck with the 1999 version of the Eyewitness News theme. The version KABC uses is way too light for NYC.

  19. There’s a good reason why WCBS, WBBM, and KCBS are all in last place in their respective markers. All are a complete and utter clown show. On the other hand, we can clearly see why all the former Westinghouse stations like KYW, KPIX, KDKA, WBZ, and WJZ are all the better performing CBS O&Os based on their handing of the new CBS I&O graphics rollouts.

  20. Local news (especially top 5 markets) provide stability and a great income. Not everyone aspires to be on National Tv News, living out of a suitcase and flying from city to city. Some would argue you may even get more name recognition as Top 10 Local Anchor at an O&O than being a field reporter at a National News service.

  21. The other news orgs have merch around their shows too. https://www.nbcstore.com/pages/nbc-news https://www.cbsstore.com/collections/cbs-news https://shopabctv.com/collections/good-morning-america

  22. And the other channels have long operated merch stores. Non-story, even if Scott Jones says so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ https://msnbcstore.com/ https://store.cnn.com/ https://shop.foxnews.com/

  23. WXYZ can get away with that with no station slogan and the alternating designations WXYZ, 7 and Channel 7 used interchangeably in their advertising. They’ve been using those three as their main branding since the 1970’s and maybe longer. CBS has the problem of it being too new and sharing call letters with WWJ 950AM… they already brand themselves starting with WWJ. So this is very unlikely.

  24. Getting off-track a bit, I would not be surprised if more stations diverted 4:00 a.m. resources to middle-of-the-day newscasts instead. Sunbeam has much more flexibility, of course, with one station independent and one station only giving up two hours a day to FOX.

  25. Also, would WWJ dare go to the call letter box, following KDKA, WBZ, etc? I didn’t think so a month ago but now, I don’t know.

  26. The production track is just for some of the opens; Dimensional is still being used when going to commercial breaks. But yeah, I totally agree.

  27. Downloaded a game I thought was kind of interesting from an ad on TikTok (warning the game sucks lol). The game started with a fake newscast. Can you tell where their inspiration came from? FullSizeRender.MOV

  28. CBS 2 CBS News New York recently started using different music for many opens and bumpers. I haven't figured out a pattern but they sometimes use it and sometimes use the regular theme. The music does not have the CBS signature and can only be described as "somber church bell." I don't understand what's happening over there.

  29. Don’t know about you but I think WKBD going independent is going to benefit the station. Not only can CBS News Detroit expand which will only mean more advertising revenue for the station, WKBD can go back to its roots, which is to do OTA live sports again. I for one am excited. Looks like CBS is putting a lot of money into WWJ which only helps its sister station.

  30. I wish some of the canceled soaps could be revived on streaming, with their episode catalogs avalible aswell. Audiences might be more accepting of streaming soaps now as opposed to OLTL and AMC on Hulu back in 2013.

  31. That’s a really good point; CBS does provide the best/easiest way to access their local newscasts digitally, especially compared to the other stations in the market. I wish ratings companies would take digital impressions into account; viewers are viewers at the end of the day, and it shouldn’t matter where they’re watching.

  32. Because why not? First up: Sunbeam-Owned WSVN Miami, WHDH Boston Add Hour of Morning News That's a lot of news. Wait... they have a general manager for each station and one for the company as a whole?

  33. Just stumbled upon some WSOC changes that take effect May 29, according to zap2it. Tamron swaps with Sherri, so Tamron will be airing at 10am and Sherri at 3pm. Also a double run of Family Feud replaces Dr. Phil at 4. I guess the new episodes of Dr. Phil will end the 26th? But still why dump him now if they are not going to start a 4pm news? I didn’t see any changes for WAXN so presumably they keep their 10am Dr. Phil airing which would become same-day I guess. This would make more sense if Dr. Phil was going off the air completely but apparently he’s staying on WAXN? And i don’t get them switching Tamron and Sherri. Oh and Charlotte would join the markets airing Feud 6 times a day, twice on WSOC and four times on WAXN.
