  1. Yea. You can see how it fits well for the digital aspects. People have got to understand that some viewers are not watching newscasts on TV. They are watching on Snapchat, Instagram. The media companies are changing to adopt to it and remain relavent. That's why they had to do what they did, from having the simple two Ns, to having a simple l3rd. They're trying to have a digital focus, while seeing how it looks on the big screen. And they did it good to me. I only have two negatives. They didn't use the simple two Ns more than I thought they would. And, they could've incorporate real time graphics, like a data of locations and time zones of it, local news there, etc. Basically like what ABC O&Os are gonna start doing in a minute. They could've done more. But for the way it is, it's a good product.

  2. It's tacky and gross. Incredible to think how both Nexstar and Scripps both basically executed the same plan launching news networks, but with such starkly different products.

  4. Mark has been in his position less than 6 years and I doubt he is angling for weekend evenings nor do I think WLS wants to add yet another new person to the weekend morning team after adding both Chatman and Martinez. It's possible he's happy where he is. If he gets the evening slot, great... but if not, I seriously doubt he would up and leave his hometown and the top news station in the market.

  5. It is a fair point but personally speaking, if I want to see something larger, I just turn my phone horizontally. Is that from youtube? From what I've seen YouTube doesn't let you do full screen for horizontally recorded videos. Off topic...can the public please record eyewitness video horizonatally (or even personal videos). You can capture more action in frame that way.

  6. Bill Steffen winding down his schedule to emeritus status times out to when they came there and I'm beginning to wonder if there might also a component to that, along with the change to a more generic image/theming away from its longtime 'good friend to the community' framing.

  7. I'm pretty sure that's from the network DC set. And no, I doubt that was live – it was probably taped too.

  8. I really do like that the graphics finally acknowledge that most TV's/smart screens show every bit of data and no longer really need a safe zone designed in the 50s, and actually show most of the entire picture, so it's an out of the way graphics package unlike many noisy sports and news packages which overload you with statistics or information (still waiting on DraftKings to officially sponsor presidential odds and polls ). But yes, 'breaking news' has become just as bad a term as the George Carlin Seven to me. It's overused and 'Developing Story/News' carries the story just as well.

  9. The only thing I dislike is still how the top stories are all "breaking news." A fad ABC started that I won't forgive. If everything is breaking news, nothing is.

  11. Fox 13 in Tampa has demolished their set which was launched in Oct 2015. It was designed by Devlin and has some similarities to WSB’s current set.

  12. If this is “giving the people what they want,” then show me the evidence of high ratings at this farce of a network to prove that this stuff even works. If you think this is the “stuff we need” when the media is facing a record low trust deficit, then with all due respect, you may want to rethink your priorities. Scripps actually did the smart thing and distributed their network on multiple platforms so that, get this, more people could at least watch the damn thing. Scripps is also far more credible, and unlike NewsNation, they aren’t a bunch of cynical attention-seeking desperados that would make Jeff Zucker blush.

  13. I suppose this confirms what a lot of people suspect; Nexstar’s management team is filled to the brim with f***ing idiots. Hey Susan, maybe if you and your company had nipped this problem in the bud months ago and listened to your employees, maybe you wouldn’t have dealt with a leak and a PR nightmare. Susan Tulley needs to go touch grass.

  14. Good point, but the rest of the graphics would not fit a vertical phone orientation, so I think it's more a result of the centered alignment and not a vertical strategy.

  15. I'm definitely surprised that the studio is expected to be ready in just a few weeks (I also haven't seen a source confirm this but I'm guessing Mary mentioned it?). Seems like a minor refresh compared to a complete overhaul (for instance WPIX's new studio took nearly 9 months to complete but that involved major construction). Also agree with some others who don't think that this is really necessary, considering WCBS had one of the nicest studios in the NYC market (I'd personally now give WPIX an edge), although the bar is pretty low with WNBC and WABC. WABC's studio is starting to look very dated, but noticed they used a liveshot behind the anchor during the haze episode, and that actually looked better than their normal background. But back to WCBS, I'm guessing this will look like a compromise between KCAL and KYW. I could see the green screen being retired as well in favor of a video wall for weather.

  16. Actually no, this is some 90s news stuff that we need. News channels need to find ways to bring drama and excitement without being about politics all the time. This is old school. This is on par with a camera following OJ in the Bronco. People secretly hope for death and destruction, that's why they watch. You can say it's immoral, but humanity at it's core is immoral, this is just giving the people what they want.

  17. An update from WOOD-TV: Employees of the station have been complaining to Nexstar higher ups about bullying, harassment, and racism from the station’s news director, Stanton Tang, for months. The anonymous employees also state that many have been overworked, and the constant burnout has led to people taking multiple personal days or leaving the station entirely. WOOD-TV staff informed Nexstar corporate about Tang’s behavior, but their complaints were ignored. https://thedesk.net/2023/06/wood-tv-stanton-tang-harassment-allegations-nexstar/ Furthermore, regarding the pride memo, Tang apparently instructed assistant ND Amy Fox to write the memo on his behalf. It is also allegedly not the first time Tang has used his personal politics to sway WOOD-TV’s news coverage. https://thedesk.net/2023/06/stanton-tang-anti-gay-pride-memo-wood-tv/

  18. The Special Report L3 update was not necessary. It was perfectly fine before. If anything, they should be trying to look less like MSNBC for bias purposes. They need to stick to a left to right orientation rather than trying to place shorter captions in the middle. This whole update reeks of change for change sake, rather than actually needed a refreshed look.

  19. That promo is impressive for a televangelist show. Usually, promos for televangelists are rudimentary with the most basic of promotions. Whoever is working at Daystar’s promo department needs a raise ASAP if they were able to do the CBS look in-house.

  20. I'm glad someone else noticed that ABC is the origin of this madness. The lower thirds are a downgrade from what they had previously, but it's better than the typical flat white rectangle. The new graphics look OK. I could definitely see these on MSNBC. The background behind the coming up graphics would look really good on the local O&Os. Nothing special, but still better than CBS and ABC. NBC can typically be trusted to have the best graphics of the big three. Let's just hope they can make it out of studio 1A eventually.

  21. I know we have talked about this before for previous years, but why hasn’t the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 tired to sell some of their shows to the US syndicate market? I’ll say it, I will watch Countdown, Pointless, and Tipping Point before I watch another newscast.

  22. Not to get too off topic, but is there anything that’s come out to suggest that WPHL will take the 10pm in house when they switch to the CW? From what I remember they were handily beating WTXF at 10pm with WPVI’s newscast, so I’m not sure why they would mess with what’s working. Either way, I doubt that would have too much bearing on when WPVI launches the new graphics.

  23. Well yeah that’s true. WUPA still has its calls from when they were UPN.

  24. Someone posted earlier in the thread that call letters aren’t much of a factor when it comes to affiliation changes. FOX 5 in SD is still operating as KSWB (San Diego’s WB)

  29. This is so frustrating... WOOD-TV has had such a legacy in this market... Makes me wonder if he wanted to screw them over... I am a personal friend of 2 of the meteorologists there and they've been so frustrated by him since day 1...

  31. Should Sinclair drop the CW, they could easily fill the time with TND or one of their diginets. And if Weigel drops WCIU, WGN's the easy choice since primetime doesn't affect their schedule that much.

  32. They have different commercial break structures for one, along with an entirely different structure to their unions and they're royalties overall, so unless it's packed into an ad-friendly format like Benny Hill and Monty Python were, it's usually passed on. There's also 'oh no scary accents!' syndrome that makes them a hard sell (though all those Discovery reality shows with bad mic work needing to be subtitled/lots of mumbling are much worse). But the other thing is a lot of folks have long figured out VPNs to watch direct from overseas without the obnoxious sell-throughs many syndicated shows have now (theme weeks and 'special offers'), and UK-specific streaming services now exist in the US, so that's where their focus went long ago, along with public television. It's also why BBC America is just an American rerun farm now, because AMC's budget cuts have killed their acquisition budget.
