  1. So if a station goes from "CBS 2 News" to "CBS News Chicago" it's "confusing" to the viewers because there's no channel number, but when a station goes from "ABC Action News" to "Tampa Bay 28" it's "confusing" to the viewers because it's too similar to everyone else? Given the situation at WANF and WPLG right now, I don't think it's too hard to see why some of the creativity in channel branding has disappeared. The ol' affiliation as part of the brand can't be relied on anymore. I suspect "Scripps News Tampa Bay" wouldn't have gone over well here, either. "Today's" was getting long in the tooth, and I know station management was pretty attached to that brand, so to see it go meant they must have really felt it wasn't "working" anymore. I would have loved to have seen a return to "News 4 Milwaukee", but "TMJ4 News" takes up less characters on Twitter, so...

  2. What I don't get is why they didn't change the branding when they debuted the new graphics pacakge??

  3. My pleasure! No creativity, you're right. You now got... WTSP: 10 Tampa Bay WTVT: FOX 13 Tampa Bay WFTS: Tampa Bay 28 WTOG: Tampa Bay 44 WVEA: Univision Tampa Bay WXPX: The Spot - Tampa Bay 66 Its not confusing at all. /s

  4. I guess Scripps doesn't want to continue paying royalties to Cox-Apollo for use of the "Action News" trademark.

  5. Comparing WPLG to KTVK c. 1994 is deeply flawed. KTVK at least tried to do unique things besides shovelware news when they lost ABC. They actually tried to do things. WPLG isn't trying by adding unsustainable levels of local news and doing a cheap xerox of WNT, and that's because of lazy programming and being owned (for now) by a faceless holding company. WANF isn't even giving the illusion of trying, they're just dumping hours and hours of low-rated news in hopes that a dozen people watch at 2pm or 3am. It won't work. Again, lazy programming is what is causing this, not because of viewer demand.

  6. No, they are not. The streaming windows are day-after-air. Sony acknowledged they are separate arrangements from the syndication pacts.

  7. Lack of local news aside, the WUPA schedule is pretty decent. Now do they actually need a news department? Would that be profitable for them?

  8. As long as the average viewer knows what is the network and/or channel number, they don't care about what the brand name is. And I put the emphasis on and/or, because on OTT guides...you don’t even get the channel number. It's only network, unless the station has the courtesy to put their logo with the channel number and network on it.

  9. I'm surprised they kept the Action News branding for as long as they did. After KSHB dropped it in 2021 I wondered if WFTS would soon follow.

  10. I really hate how generic Scripps newscasts are known as now; WTMJ had its branding as "Today's TMJ4" built in for so long, so having to hear "TMJ4 News" instead is so grating. I also assume since WXPX is now programmed as "The Spot" they needed to drop the specific ABC branding to avert confusion (and avoid absurd newscast titles like ABC Action News at 9 on The Spot Tampa Bay 66), along with the Cox branding royalties mentioned in that thread. ETA - Thanks for bringing up WTOG (aka "Tampa Bay 44") in that thread @TheRolyPoly; on top of that and "10 Tampa Bay", it's both clear there's a dearth of creativity and confusion among brand managers in that area.

  12. According to Scott Fybush, WFTS is dropping ABC Action News and rebranding to Tampa Bay 28 News effective Monday.

  13. MyNetworkTV basically. A branding package and a programming block that can be aired as is, bounced around, or split in half. WATL tried the primetime news and it failed. How bad were the ratings?

  14. We have another retirement coming up. Wednesday, October 15th, will be the last for WEEK's Chief Meteorologist Chuck Collins after 50 years in broadcasting, 23 of them at WMBD, and the last 16 of them at WEEK. https://www.25newsnow.com/2025/08/13/week-tv-chief-meteorologist-chuck-collins-announces-retirement/

  15. It's so cute that everyone is just casually assuming that Nexstar would be obligated to sell anything when this merger is announced. The cold hard fact is Brendan Carr—a total right-wing hack of the worst sort—along with his lackey Olivia Trusty, will do all they can to get this cleared and approved as quickly as possible and will ignore any protests to the contrary. Why? Because Nexstar is the quintessential Republican company led by a typical Republican (Perry) whose lone purpose is to buy shit up. It's a company Brendan Carr loves and adores. We've seen in full display what he'll do with companies he doesn't like. Who cares if the current legislation doesn't allow it? No one else in this regime gives two shits about laws on the books they don't like, let alone one shit. Congress, who already just destroyed public broadcasting with a glint in their eye, wouldn't care if Carr superceded them (beyond the meaningless whining from the likes of Susan Collins or the tone-deaf tweets of an enriched, oblivious Charles Schumer) and you know it.

  16. KTVQ Billings has announced that Hailey Monaco is their new morning anchor. That line alone is not necessarily newsworthy around here. However, this time is different because Hailey's director inside the control room during the morning newscast is the one who launched the show and knows her personally... 39-year KTVQ veteran and more importantly, her father: Rob Monaco. https://www.ktvq.com/news/local-news/new-anchor-joins-montana-this-morning-and-shes-keeping-it-in-the-family

  19. When you get something like this, you know its official. Dylan Federico has joined my station, WSVN 7, as its newest meteorologist. As far as I'm aware, nobody is leaving the Weather side, meaning that the team, led by Chief Meteorologist Phil Ferro, who celebrates 20 years this year as WSVN's Chief, now has SIX meteorologists on board. For comparison, WFOR has five, WTVJ also has six (I don't count the WSCV mets for this purpose, and yes, John Morales counts even if he's only their hurricane specialist), and the new Indie WPLG has, get this... 8 (that also includes their hurricane specialist, Michael Lowry). It makes sense to have a lot of meteorologists in this hurricane-prone market. https://www.facebook.com/DylanFedericoWx/posts/pfbid02jm7aK5RzfyZkVAqhiVJmnhWo22NJchpWEzJ1HmGcDSvnb3jDyvnfFLyvFKpTgtdzl

  20. I have a couple of fonts created by amateur typographers on DeviantArt based on the Fox logo; they don’t resemble the version introduced during the game, and seem more influenced by Gotham than Franklin Gothic.
