  1. On the topic of Tribune...I've thought this for a long time, now I'll say it: If something comes of these rumors, it's going to be a big step towards the cold reality I think is coming: Canada-level consolidation within the next 5 to 10 years, of the sort that will probably destroy the "local" image of the stations here as much as it has there. Brace yourselves.

  2. You ain't kidding, now I don't have to watch Telemundo in crappy SD on DirecTV.

  3. WGN America is not that big a hammer. It's lots of old reruns and tired movies with one or two original productions here and there. There isn't anything that can't be found on a dozen other rerun channels, and certainly nothing that anybody feels is a cable deal-maker or breaker.

  5. These are among my favorite themes (from the top shelf labelled "epic") - and ones I grew up with from three continents. The third video was recorded by me (although the clip was appropriated by ManciniTV - who didn't acknowledge my video!) ITN Weekend and Overnight News 1989 This was more or less the first theme that I loved as a kid. (and their rather elegant .) TVQ Brisbane used an even more punchy version of the powerful Ten closer used elsewhere. Forgive the insufferable anchors, and TVQ really screwed that open timing; but the close is something! CNN Earlybird News. Apart from my original blurb for my , where I wrote: "A jazzy groove and a Southern feel for your early mornings on CNN in 1990. And that name is just so 'slow hand'! This program aired via Ten Newswatch in Australia"..... I can also add that I always heard a kind of Japanese vibe to this music, which perhaps lent it a kind of 'international', 'news coming in overnight from around the world' vibe..

  6. Looks like Nexstar is cleaning house in Jackson, MS at WJTV.

  7. Let's be real, at this rate, the Queen really won't die until 2126.

  8. Buried under the news of ASN going kaput, but somewhat related to it, is this gem. WRLH somehow did some technical reformatting and now is no longer able to get WJLA-produced DC United games for it's .2.. This when fellow affiliates/sister stations WUTB(.3.), WTVZ(.2) and WSET(.2) did not have a similar issue. What may have happened on a technical end? For a technically minded company wouldn't Sinclair have made sure to prevent this?

  9. Most, if not all Storer Broadcasting CBS affiliates did not think highly of the low rated CBS Late Movies, but they did like the option of showing syndicated fare like "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" or "Fernwood2Night" (and of course, sell the ad time therein). This left CBS to shop the late movie to other stations in such markets so the eye's ad sales team could sell "nationwide" coverage to national advertisers.

  10. The length is definitely surprising (especially with a thinned department at spring training time), but again, a suspension ultimately does make sense. I'm stunned at how many are taking his side in the Feder comments, though, as those "intellectuals" would usually scoff at Mark's typical "buffoonery".

  12. Of Sinclair's 173 stations, 93 will be repacked and 3 of them have been sold in the spectrum auction. Other tidbits from their earnings call: The Comet diginet has been profitable for them since launch, and they expect to roll out ATSC 3.0 in 2018. http://finance.yahoo.com/news/edited-transcript-sbgi-earnings-conference-015439583.html

  13. And even though WSFL airs NewsFix in which I don't watch, WSFL is well run but will be ruined if Sinclair takes over.

  14. Oh god no. If Sinclair buys the major ones, say goodbye to WPIX, KTLA and WGN as we know it. Sinclair ruins everything and these stations will be no different. If Tribune goes away, these stations are ruined.

  15. What companies like Sinclair really want is access to New York (WPIX), Los Angeles (KTLA) and Chicago (WGN)-- mostly WGN. I warned about it when Liguori started complaining about the stock price (i.e., the investors want their money). Tribune sold real estate. They sold Gracenote. They offered buyouts. Liguori is leaving. Station sales are next. If no company can be formed to buy the whole lot, then Tribune will have to smash itself with a hammer.

  16. Conflicts they would have: Meredith - Kansas City, Hartford/New Haven, Portland Sinclair - Des Moines, Grand Rapids/Kalamazoo, St. Louis, Greensboro/Triad, Oklahoma City, Portland, Harrisburg et. al., Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Salt Lake City, Richmond, Seattle, Milwaukee Meredith could actually acquire a lot of the assets straight up (under the cap that exists now), if they want to pass on the big superstations and the duopoly bait. Really, I think the small CW stations outside of the top 3 markets should just be sold now as duopoly bait.

  17. Great, that's all we need, Sinclair in New York City,Los Angeles, and Chicago. Also, I'm too lazy to look the other potential markets they may have to sell, but even with the cap raised, they would have to at least divest stations in St. Louis* and Greensboro. * Although Meredith also would have to divest a station in the market

  18. Honestly, it's not any worse than what he gets away with on the radio, and he claims the bosses are usually listening, so they are likely prepared for these talks. He's made his political leanings no secret there, on the condition that he's sports, so there's a bit of a disconnect (which can certainly be debated). On a scale to 1 to 'Flaming Detroit', this is about a 6.
