1. From 2000, an edition of WBBM's ill-fated "alternative" 10 p.m. news with Carol Marin. (Let's hope that KUSA's 6 p.m. experiment is more successful and that it proves that local news doesn't have to be formulaic to be successful):

 2. I don't post much on here but ever since Charter Communication took over, they've done an incredible job trying to destroy NY1. Them getting rid of The Call, firing all those reporters and now getting rid of the ENTIRE Sports Department? This is disgusting and I wonder how much longer this station will even be around. Just pitiful smh

 4. Loss of (expensive) talent that identify with the viewer can risk being a big turnoff. After all, Sinclair's favorite colors are pink and green. WJW and WGN-TV risk being wounded irreparably by THAT... moreso than by being forced to run Osama bin Epshteyn ordering the arrests of people protesting the Trump Regime... or Sheryl Atkinson's poor impersonation of a non-discredited journalist. (And to clarify, both WJW and WGN-TV will be losing a lot of veteran talent, even in the imperceptible chance the Sinclair deal implodes.)

 5. Eric Wotila, the founder of WMNN-LD in Cadillac/Traverse City, is kickstarting a news network that would be available over the air and online. I got a hold of a press release Wotila sent out:

 6. I'm sorry, but one does not launch a national network by begging for $100,000 in funding. Zero. Chance.

 7. As I'm going through stuff on discs and looking for newscasts I know I have (somewhere on tape...), I wish I could go back in time to my early newscast recording self and give myself a few pieces of advice: 1) ,Record the entire newscast - I spent too much time recording the open and close, ignoring the middle... 2) Label the Video Tape right after it's recorded - with details - not just "Detroit" or "Programs"... 3) Put the full date and time and the station on the tape... 4) Keep detailed records in a simple spreadsheet (and occasionally print it out)... I have details in a database that I can no longer open - and can no longer find... Since the last thing printed was in 2006, no telling which computer it was on... (and I no longer have said computer...). Anyway, more stuff coming with the new week... Jim

 8. Here's the evening news open used by Canal 4 in Montevideo, Uruguay, used between 1998 and 2000. It was a little bit innovative because of the music; back then, electronic tango wasn't very common.

 10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id=JkwzWLUa0_4;m=1;s=40 The next theme was in use by July 1987. There's a comment on one of Jim Heath's KPHO videos: "Some of the various opening themes used during this era were: *1981-82 (approx.)—funky bass open, main melody played by electric-guitar vibrato chords *1982-83—trumpet-based theme, with string bridge [quite clearly this theme] *approx. 1986-92—just a short musical stinger for the open: a bass and electric piano riff, ending with a synth crescendo [NMSA "KPHO 1988]" This would have been bookended by Part of Your Life in the late 70s/early 80s (used by all the Meredith stations) and Signature, which probably debuted in 1992. ——— And a dash of Tampa news promos:

 11. Why is it Tribune that would have to pay that? Isn't it normally the would-be-buyer that would pay? Also, it makes it look like Tribune's the one being punished for the deal collapsing for regulatory reasons, even if those reasons are because of Sinclair's massive size.

 13. WPMI is no longer "Local 15". They are once again "NBC 15"....with a new logo! Not too bad, considering some of the hideous logos that Sinclair has churned out in recent years...

 16. Hubbard was behind the All News Channel and it still couldn’t compete. Maybe it was years ahead of its time and could have had a chance in the diginet era. We’ll never know.

 17. So, three weeks before the show launches and anybody has seen it, you've decided you don't like it and won't watch it. Yeah. That makes sense. Oh, and punctuation is still relevant

 18. I hope LNN gets on the air. Good luck to them, we need a channel like this. By the way, I do know one of the personalities personally.

 19. Sad to see how NY1 canned Sports on 1 I actually liked that show compared to anything on FS1 or ESPN these days.So many good programs have been canned The Call,One On One,NYT Close Up.I dont like the new Mornings on 1 format starting Oct 23 part of the reason why I loved NY1 so much it was Hyper Local and not Personality Driven if I want that I could watch GDNY on WNYW(FOX 5) or Eyewitness News on WABC(ABC 7). At this point I would prefer FIOS 1 or News 12 even though they been going through some issues. 100 Percent agree Charter is basically destroying the heart and soul of that Station its losing its quirkyness

 21. Sports is expensive to cover. Access to game highlights is expensive, access to technical facilities at NY/NJ stadiums and arenas is expensive and the NY teams and leagues have their own channels and networks so they virtually spit on the locals. Add to that, the locals are barred from using any of it online. Local stations everywhere have been cutting back on Sports for years because it's a pain in the ass and a (local) money pit. Viewers who care can get what they want elsewhere. And despite the predictions of doom, no station has fallen off the Nielsen map because they cut back or eliminated Sports. NY1 has made a decision to concentrate on what their core viewers seem to turn to them for the most: Intense transit and commuter coverage; and hyper-local neighborhood and borough news that the broadcast locals can't/don't offer. NY1 has a very loyal and committed New York audience that doesn't place Sports high on their priority list. I don't know what Charter has in mind for its future, but don't assume the end of Sports is a death knell. It could be quite the opposite: A decision to concentrate on why the channel has been successful for so long.

 26. I'm not in support of the merger, but I will say one thing about the commentaries from Sinclair - at least they don't make it look like it's a part of the newscast - different graphics, theme, look, etc. If you like the news on Sinclair's Local 37, but don't like the commentaries - perfect time to visit the crapper, walk the dog, or whatever makes you happy. 28. Basically, with ABC in College Football mode on Saturdays and ABC Sports on Sundays (which could run long), I'm guessing they got tired of the "will it or won't it air", and just is running on the CW, which we all know, is rife with potential program blocking concerns...

 29. NEWS 5! From 1986, but the PATCO striking workers in the open indicate 4-5 years of additional use beforehand! (it cannot be older than 1981) As to the theme? Late last year I did find this 1984 item from The Arizona Republic...

 31. That's the first thing I thought of. "This almost sounds like something 3 would do!" And this is the first time I've heard the "full" Pinnacle newsbreak cut. It's good. Really reinforces the idea suggested by the original name: Round the Clock News. The KPNX newsbreak is also interesting: it features The Coast theme (used with the apparently second generation of TVbD graphics) with the next generation's graphics package. And then there are these sung ID tags for KNXV...

 32. Tribune risks having to pay a hefty "kill fee" if the merger isn't completed by some point next spring, or if it collapses. In reality, both Sinclair and Tribune should have set that kill fee for two years, not one year. But Sinclair also expected Paid Off to ignore the rules and let it go with a rubber stamp as big as the Free Stamp on Cleveland's downtown. That's really the only signal worth keeping an eye on, IMO. If that kill fee deadline is extended, that means something is up.

 33. From what I could find on Newspapers.com, "12 News Now" was very short lived, as by February of 93, Bill Cosby's You Bet Your Life was in it's place, and when that was cancelled, A Current Affair, the show which 12 News Now replaced, took it's time slot.

 34. And the transfer of pharmaceutical licensees and approvals are NOT complicated and full of delays? But I get your point. I think the delays will only help Sinclair...kinda like the way delays worked for the Rocket Boy of the North. Reminder: I'm against the Sinclair deal... not because of politics...but because I believe in LOCAL ownership. I support free speech for all...not just a few.
