  1. Like a major news story, I thought this deserved a SPECIAL GRAPHIC, but in light of recent debuts, this is all we're gonna get...

  3. It required too much effort, on my end, which seemed appropriate.

  4. Made it better. My point: the package is fine. One could argue it's a bit rough around the edges (why the speech bubble?), but otherwise it's fairly inoffensive. If this forum expanded their horizons beyond domestic borders (pop quiz, we don't and here's why), they could've known the core elements of this package are essentially in line with general design trends around the world.

  5. Coincidentally, earlier today, I made a spoof of the new Scripps gfx. I wasn't planning on posting it on TVNT, but now I can't help myself. Enjoy!

  6. Here we go, bringing WPIX into this again. I don't want to write my thoughts about this debate again, so I'll link to what I wrote previously:

  7. I totally agree. The gfx stand no chance against WPLG and WSVN's graphics...even WTVJ's gfx. If their only competitor was WFOR, then maybe, but this is the Miami DMA. Unless they have a higher velocity variant to this gfx pkg we haven't seen yet, then expect the newscast to be dead on arrival. The s-l-o-w pace of these graphics will not work in Miami's very fast-paced market. While graphics aren't the most important element to a newscast, they do help set the pace and tone of a newscast and are extremely important to get right. These graphics are not the right fit for many markets...including Miami.

  8. Only on weeknights, weekends it's still branded "TV 10/55 News at 9".

  9. Not to mention there are still some of the Tribune/Nexstar rejects Scripps acquired that are still on the Tribune-related layouts. It takes longer than what people realized to get the stations assimilated into a new platform and then you have to get new graphics and everything else in order

  10. WBZ did the same thing with their 8pm newscast on WSBK when they launched CBSN Boston.

  11. Scripps has clearly picked up a wide realm of stations from the merger leftovers. Getting them on board may be a difficult and expensive task. Miami seems like the kind of place where a Now/Newsy/EyeOpener newscast would be in play. It would have to stand out because it's a very crowded market where the Spanish language stations push the "Big 4" into duopoly bait ratings-wise. The new look would certainly have to be jazzed up a bit, since the blue is such a drab color for a vibrant place like South Florida. As for WPIX? They may not be putting a lot of effort there, especially if Nexstar finds a way and succeeds in using their option to own them.

  12. New York sister station did this same practice, I believe last year. They got rid of its branded "10/55 News at 9" for a CBSN NY-produced news at that timeslot.

  13. By November 1982, KETV still had the old logo, along with “Newsbeat” and the recycled 1980 graphics: However they do have a slide at the end for their meteorologists (Jim Flowers, Rob Dixon, Don Novak), which were later used for the 1983 graphics with the KSNW theme. Also of note (not news): an ATARI commercial from KMART

  14. I'm not the biggest fan of these graphics by any means. However, I do think that Scripps has a shot in Miami if they play all their cards right and position WSFL as the anti-WSVN. At the very least, it'll give Scripps a chance to experiment with giving viewers an alternative to the gaudiness that's 7 News.

  15. We're just having a healthy discussion/debate on this. I could care less at this point what Scripps does. But since I have some interest in graphics design, I do have my opinions when gfx get rolled out to a station group.

  16. I think the biggest problem Scripps has ran into is that they've brought so many stations in almost a year that they've essentially placed the graphics and everything else on the backburner. Clearly this will cost Scripps in the long haul especially with their development of the news department for WSFL as I don't think the new graphics package will go over too well in South Beach

  20. you'll change your mind once i finish writing my essay about how the stretched helvetica WJZ graphics were the pinnacle of creativity in graphic design for broadcast media and literally everything that came after it is depressing and awful and on par with (gasp!) the WKYC rebrand!!!

  21. Calling news music packages "production music" and saying television design "peaked" because we don't like it is exactly the level headed analysis I would expect from TVNT.

  22. They have been hiring for technical roles in DC, and there's always been a control room there, so it's safe to say at least a good chunk of the production is coming from DC.

  25. They changed over the social handles to the new name so those did go along. The yourphx.com site is probably going to go away once all the important and mandated stuff is on the new one. Worth noting here that as part of ATSC 3.0 work the KASW mux is planned as the high power 3.0 test site complete with three DTS facilities. The KNXV mux would air KASW's main programming and Grit sub and the other subchannels are placed with other stations. (This would also see the ATSC 3.0 mirrors of some of the stations on KFPH-CD be moved over to KASW.) A few other KASW notes... MMJ Adam Waltz, who hosted the 30 Second Download and Phoenix Rising halftime show, is now a reporter for KNXV as well and his bio has been added. (Not a bad way to return to news reporting: his last news gig was at the NPG TV operation in St. Joseph, MO!) He says he'll still be doing the 30-Second Downloads "for the time being". MMJ Chloe Mar also made the move to reporting at ABC15. Their other on-camera personality, Hailey Frances (who also was KASW's "Content Manager"), is not listed and hasn't mentioned anything about ABC15 on her Twitter, so I'm unsure what she's up to. Given the lack of social media postings on a regular basis from the CW61 Arizona accounts... They removed that one post that they had that was a sports show live feed from WOOD, so it had to have been unintentional. The yourphx.com site now shows Anita Helt as the general manager of KASW. She is KNXV's GM and also the only person on that site with an @abc15.com address. Scripps's next priorities, outside of general integration, should be renewing the Phoenix Rising deal and getting local news on 61. Those are big ratings and promotional drivers to the station.
