  1. Denise joined TV8 in late 1983 per this story in the PD. Along with some kind words from Virgil Dominic former ND/GM at TV8. https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2019/12/former-channel-8-anchor-denise-dascenzo-dies-at-61.html This was on Scott Sabol fbook fan page. Posted in 2017.

  2. Also the announcers as well, WFTS could a learn a thing or two what KXXV did by keeping Max McGill as their announcer. Certainly WTXL as well, I wonder why they did away with having the VO?

  3. The lack of any real competition in the market could be one reason.

  4. It appears KXXV is bolding some of the type. Makes a difference.

  6. Coincidentally, earlier today, I made a spoof of the new Scripps gfx. I wasn't planning on posting it on TVNT, but now I can't help myself. Enjoy!

  7. They better get it right when the package is forced on KSBY and WLEX. They have stellar packages and themes right now. If Scripps gets it wrong on those stations, that would be very unfortunate. Scripps is hopefully wising up a little bit from the botched implementation on WTXL and WFTS. As @oknewsguy said, it appears that KXXV is making small, baby steps in the right direction.

  8. The way KXXV implemented this Graphics package is a step in the right direction. However, it is baby steps but it is going in the right direction. The music package on the other hand still needs work but at least from what I could tell KXXV is using the better cuts in the package. Overall I think that if more Scripps stations take this package and improve upon the overall graphics package (i.e. making the fonts more bolder, adding more cuts to the package that should sound newscast appropriate) this won't be as bad as what we initially thought. It's up to the stations at Scripps to decide do they want to implement what KXXV has implemented and even improve on what KXXV did and make it even better or go the WTXL/WFTS route.

  9. Who knows? But the difference is nearly night and day. The music still needs improvement to sound newscast appropriate. But I can at least halfway stomach the graphics on KXXV.

  10. WFTS and WTXL could learn a lesson or two from KXXV. Kind of ridiculous that a station in Tampa Bay didn't implement the graphics as well as a station in Waco. I'll give WTXL a pass because they are in a smaller market. But it's clear that WFTS could've and should've done better with implementation. That's not to say I like these graphics. I think Scripps should ultimately go back to the drawing board--or give control over graphics back to each station.

  11. Here's the KXXV Open with the new graphics. At least KXXV didn't change the VOs the way WTXL (going with no VO) and WFTS did

  12. By the way, another observation I'll make: Why didn't Gray invest in new duratrans for WDAM's set? It doesn't match the new graphics very well.

  13. I'd be very interested to see how Hemmer does in that hour, I do wonder if he'll lead the Special Reports and Breaking News coverage for Fox or will that go to somebody else?

  15. Furthermore, the WFLD package shown in the clip lacked a key component of TVbD/JCBD's graphics of the 1980s and early 1990s. The layer effects of the name banners and title logos in the news open just slide from left to right, not zooming out or coming together at a split point. Basically, every package from those two companies had that element at that time; this package doesn't. Compare the WFLD open to the WGN midday open and to these...

  16. Another senior local news anchor is signing off at CTV. Ken Shaw, the long time anchor of CFTO/CTV Toronto's noon ant 6 PM newscasts, is leaving his post on the anchor desk in January 2020. He will still be part of the CTV News team doing special projects for at least the next year. A Frank magazine article in November had suggested that CTV may have pushed Shaw out as part of a round of layoffs in October. https://toronto.ctvnews.ca/ctv-news-toronto-s-veteran-anchor-ken-shaw-announces-retirement-1.4719052 Shaw is the latest long-serving local news anchors at the CTV network to leave. On November 14, Gord Leclerc, one of CKY/CTV Winnipeg's main anchors for 24 years, was unceremoniously let go after presenting the station's noon newscast. https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/special/instagram/anchor-leclerc-laid-off-by-ctv-564943692.html In September, CFRN/CTV Edmonton's Daryl McIntyre ended his 33-year run as that station's top news presenter; he had stated publicly that he was forced to take a buyout. https://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/liane-faulder-its-a-wrap-as-daryl-mcintyre-leaves-the-nightly-news-desk-at-ctv In April 2018, CTV also let go Tamara Taggart and Mike Killeen, the two principal anchors at CIVT/CTV Vancouver. Tamara had been at CIVT since the launch of that station in 1999. https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/ctv-vancouver-fires-news-anchors-tamara-taggart-mike-killeen Some of the legacy news anchors that remain across the CTV network are Steve Murphy and Bruce Frisko (ATV/CTV Atlantic), Mutsumi Takahashi (CFCF/CTV Montreal), Ian White (CFCN/CTV Calgary), and Jim Chricton (CHWI/CTV Windsor).

  17. An old, ironic promo of Informativos Telecinco in September 2005: Mediaset's Spanish channel was relaunching its news service at the time. Journalist (and news director) Juan Pedro Valentin was in charge of anchoring the main evening program. Valentin's stint was short-lived: he was replaced by Pedro Piqueras in February 2006. I hope you don't get scared of that dastardly robot! Moving on to 2019, Portugal em Direto, a daily RTP1 program which focuses on regional news, was revamped almost a month ago. The music theme is softer than the previous one and the graphics are minimalistic. And here's one from Argentina: Canal 13's weekday 1pm news gets a daily handover from a gossip show that precedes it since November 4, 2019. The opener of the newscast has been removed and the program kicks off with a banter between the anchors as they go straight to the headlines and top stories. This has been made to keep the viewers of the gossip show and to prevent them from changing channels. What do you think?

  18. I took the liberty of rewatching her last newscast on Saturday night after the news broke while NewsOn still had it up. She looked fine at that time which makes this even more shocking especially since if there was a family history she sure, as a health reporter, wasn't vocal about it. 19. I think it was in-house. The graphics look a bit less slick and colorful than what TVBD and JCBD were going for at the time.

  20. Well at least the open has more depth to it than WWSB's open. But I'm not a huge fan of this gfx package. That random spinning sphere seems awkward, in this open.

  21. True, but it always makes sense to consider successes and failures from other countries. Sometimes, transnational comparisons are useful simply because they show us that there's a fresh, different way of doing things.

  22. Do not hold out hope for Move Closer To Your World sticking around. Tegna (then Gannet) shattered my dreams when it ripped the Spirit Of Texas out from under WFAA for no good reason at all. This company’s main goal in life is to take away anything that made a station unique, watchable and likable and replace it with cheaply designed, grossly underpaid, non-focus grouped cow manure. Thus, they will take great pleasure in sending MCTYW down the Lougee Loo and replacing it with their new age scat-snap-and-clap-fest as the viewers of NE PA light their torches and call for some heads—that I can assure you. They will spit in the faces of their valued viewers and laugh as they smash WNEP under their boots. As an aside, can someone please bring back Belo? I will buy you lunch! (For context: I’m not some old fart reminiscing about the good old days. I’m in my early-mid twenties, you know, the demographic Tegna is trying to reach with their crap. Just sayin’.) Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

  23. If they could tweak the blue to match this shade I think the package would be a bit more desirable. I like this graphic’s look.

  24. We're just having a healthy discussion/debate on this. I could care less at this point what Scripps does. But since I have some interest in graphics design, I do have my opinions when gfx get rolled out to a station group.

  25. I totally agree. The gfx stand no chance against WPLG and WSVN's graphics...even WTVJ's gfx. If their only competitor was WFOR, then maybe, but this is the Miami DMA. Unless they have a higher velocity variant to this gfx pkg we haven't seen yet, then expect the newscast to be dead on arrival. The s-l-o-w pace of these graphics will not work in Miami's very fast-paced market. While graphics aren't the most important element to a newscast, they do help set the pace and tone of a newscast and are extremely important to get right. These graphics are not the right fit for many markets...including Miami.

  26. Scripps is a the perfect example of the sea change that has happened in local broadcasting. They used to be one of the better groups right up there with Hearst and Post-Newsweek (Graham) and even Gannett before they got broken up. They began losing their way when they were too cheap for syndicated programming. There were many takers that benefited from them casting off such "expensive" shows as Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! And this was shortly after Oprah ended her run, opening up many 4pm newscasts across the country (or trying to fill the void with other talkers. WEWS alone underwent drastic schedule changes that seem to have never been fixed ratings-wise. The next shift was the rise of the mega-groups. Sinclair awoke and bought some stations (Four Points), then some more (Newport & Cox cast-offs), and then went on a shopping spree with Barrington, Fisher, and later Allbritton. At the same time, Media General merged with Young, Belo merged with Gannett, thus making these groups much larger. Later LIN merged with Media General. I bring up Young/Media General because one of their packages (the WATE/WTEN one specifically) looked a lot like the package Scripps introduced the year before, that's just now being phased out. With the Media General merger, and it's rollout to some of their own legacy stations, you have a now-larger group ripping off a now-smaller one. On the Scripps end, they ended up getting bigger with the Journal merger, the Cordillera purchase, and now the Nexstar-Tribune and Raycom-Gray castoffs. And only now, they are updating the look group-wide. They've fallen far behind the other groups graphics-wise, and seem to not having a good grasp on rolling this out to all of these stations they now own. Meanwhile, the super-groups like Nexstar and Sinclair make it look easy and seamless as each station is assimilated into the "borg". Sinclair has updated some of their newer acquisitions multiple times. Even Gray with their multiple packages makes each market look halfway decent (even if it's not as good as what it replaced.) Scripps? They need a lot of work, and it's not just their current graphics package.

  27. I've said it before in a different thread but I'll say it again: What works in France or Germany may not always work in America (and vice versa)...and that's okay. Every country is different and therefore the trends will reflect that. But make no mistake: these graphics will not work on WPIX--and especially WSFL. A person would have delusions of grandeur if they think that these new gfx could possibly work in a fast-paced and hyper-competitive market as Miami (WSFL). What gets me is how Hearst, Sinclair, and Nexstar all use some form of modern 2D graphics (with at least some 3D elements) that look great and are very functional...yet Scripps had to go completely bland with their gfx. I would prefer Scripps look and sound as best as possible, but it's their company so I just shrug my shoulders and move along.

  28. Made it better. My point: the package is fine. One could argue it's a bit rough around the edges (why the speech bubble?), but otherwise it's fairly inoffensive. If this forum expanded their horizons beyond domestic borders (pop quiz, we don't and here's why), they could've known the core elements of this package are essentially in line with general design trends around the world.

  36. Sad news from the game show + retro community. Poster David Downs who runs the Fun and Games Channel on youtube (Wheel, J!, vintage HBO, etc..) + created sarcastic videos on the day's TPIR on facebook under his aforementioned name, passed away at the age of 35. He leaves behind his fiancee Amanda. An inspiration + driving force for nostalgia geeks in us. Rest well.

  39. Hartford, CT... Southern New England... WFSB-TV... and Channel 3 Eyewitness News will never be the same without Denise D'Ascenzo. Thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to her family and to Denise's extended family at Channel 3 Eyewitness News. Denise contributions and dedication throughout the Hardford and Southern New England area were prospectively and respectfully great. And I know many of her fans and loyal viewers are sad, heartbroken and devastated of her unexpected death... she'll emotionally will be missed. Rest in Peace, Denise... God bless you, and Godspeed.
