Ratings are not as bad as people think. KCTV is competitive in the afternoon and evening. They are way behind in the morning.
Wow. Just ......... wow.

I noticed Gray is starting to hire for its "daily magazine show," which I presume will begin airing in September at the latest. They say it is not a newscast, but it sure looks like a newscast from the description.
The proper term is "infotainment". Think Better TV under Meredith.

Kate Glover has been fired as news director at KCTV. She lasted a year. She's their...9th(?) news director in 13 years.
How bad is it over at KCTV, ratings-wise, for them to cycle through so many NDs in over a decade?

That's the old WFAA set.
Well, the desk came from there at least.

I haven't heard this version of News Series 2000 before.

It just keeps getting better between Nexstar and Xfinity....and even Mission is involved as well.....
And the stations are scheduled to go dark THIS WEEKEND.
I don't normally cheer for a blackout, but Nexstar has had this coming to them for a long time. They invented this game, and if they don't play by the rules they're about to lose big time.
Ads have already started running in affected markets with a Nexstar-owned CBS station:

I've heard that Gray is pretty much rejecting all capital budget requests for next year unless it's absolutely necessary or an emergency. Basically trying to build up a recession defense early.
I would suspect other station groups will do the same, especially now that election season is over and with market uncertainty being the way it is right now. You either cut back on spending enough to weather the storm until things get better, or at worst do rounds of layoffs.

This is what the main desk area looks like. Notice the industrial elements in the backdrop.

Is it very different as KXTV, KSDK, WHAS, WFAA, or WTSP?
The desk design is different, and there's a lot of "industrial" framing in various areas of the new set. Other than that, it's no different from the other TEGNA stations that received the Jack Morton/PDG/blackwalnut/Joe Lamberta design.

Sucks that because of football anyone who lives out of the Memphis area can’t watch the newscast to see the set debut.
You're not missing much. It's your typical TEGNA set, albeit with some modifications.

Meteorologist Andrew Kozak is making his on-air debut in about 20 minutes.
Nice guy, and a very good move up for him too.

Wow. They actually tore down a decent set only to downgrade. This is like the TV version of demolishing a ranch home only to build a gaudy McMansion. I’m sure all the money they blew on that thing will fix all of their ratings problems. /s
Seriously, they thought they needed to junk a 3 year old set? And they replaced it with the same FX corner garbage they use everywhere else? What a waste. No, it’s not bad enough for viewers to notice or care, but that’s not the point. The point is that there was no need to waste loads money on a new set, especially when it adds nothing that the old set didn’t already have.
I remember someone brought up concerns over early HD-era sets being less energy efficient, but as far as I can tell, the now-old set didn’t seem to have that issue. If anything, it wouldn’t surprise me if the new set was less energy efficient than the old one, with all those monitors they’re using. If that’s all Nexstar can come up with in a top-20 market, I don’t have high hopes for what WPIX/KTLA are getting.
I swear KDVR and KWGN cycle through more sets than the average TV station usually does.
As for the question you asked about energy efficiency, the seamless LED video walls that are being utilized throughout KDVR's new set are supposedly low maintenance and more efficient than the alternative, which is plastering the studio with grids of giant TV monitors (which Nexstar does when it comes to their in-house builds).

Per Twitter this morning, former WATN/WLMT reporter & sports director Marcus "Doc" Holliday has been hired by WMC-TV to take over as the station's sports director - succeeding Jarvis Greer, who is retiring at the end of the year.

FX's set design elements are really starting to look cheap and dated. They're especially bad here!
This was all done in-house. Not by FX Group.
If they wanted to go for a coastal look, they did a very sterile and generic job at doing so.

So, looking at WHBQ's schedule as of today, the following changes have been made:
- Sherri Shephard at 10AM
- DISH Nation at 11:30AM
- Family Feud at Noon (replacing The Real) in addition to 4PM
- Divorce Court at 2:00PM (replacing Judge Jerry)
Don't know why they decided to double down (or quadruple down, in this case) on Family Feud, tbh.

My guess is the new setup will be along the lines of what KTHV, WCNC, and (to an extent) KARE all received recently.
-
WATN is making the following changes to their lineup as of September 12:
- 25 Words or Less at 9AM; Pictionary at 9:30AM (replacing Ellen)
- Karamo at 3PM (replacing Nick Cannon)
- The Jennifer Hudson Show at 4PM (replacing Hot Bench)
- iCrime with Elizabeth Vargas at 6:30PM (replacing You Bet Your Life)

Would the Nexstar stations try to move the CW network to one of their subchannels or things just stay the way it is?
If that is the case, I would see WKYT losing CW on 27.2. WDKY getting the CW on 56.2. But WKYT would try to steal MyTV.
I could see a scenario in which WREG takes the CW affiliation from WLMT within the next year and places it on a subchannel (most likely on 3.2 with the NC3A feed being shifted to 3.3 and Antenna TV to 3.4). The same would be the case with WATE taking over from WBXX. The latter stations I mentioned (WLMT & WBXX) are part of existing duopolies and have MNTV to fall back on if need be.
WNAB could be a complicated situation since they're "locally" owned, but managed by Sinclair. Would they be willing to shed their current JSA/SSA to join up with Nexstar/WKRN?

Bumping this thread. Per Trevor Birchett on Twitter, the entire studio is now being gutted.

The St. Louis Business Journal is reporting that Gray has purchased an office building in the suburbs at 77 Progress Parkway, previously the office for a company called Biomedical Systems. They expect to be moved in by late summer or fall 2023.
The brochure for the property can be found here.
Not a bad choice. The design of the building itself just screams TV station.

KAIT in Jonesboro got the new Gray look as well.
Interesting that this happened right before their new set was supposed to debut.

The new couch setup replaced the corner desk area in the main studio (first picture in the slideshow).
https://www.clickspringdesign.com/portfolio/twc-studio/
Before that, the second half of America's Morning Headquarters was done from a small table and two chair setup in front of the 4x4 video wall.

That's what happens when you decide to go the Nexstar route and do all of your set builds in-house instead of outsourcing to a third party like in the past.
Quite a shame.
