    WATN needs it, BAD.

It's half Nexstar with the other half being the Tegna look (with the COVID-19 scheme)

I'm sure it's all because of the pandemic and Tegna had these ready to roll out to their stations.  But it looks really weird and hacked together.  Almost as bad as when Newport was schlepping through its final days as WPTY ABC 24 only for Nexstar to save the day by killing their former sister stations down in Little Rock (KLRT/KSAN and stealing their set, literally!)

I think it's only a matter of time before WATN switches over to the full-blown TEGNA look, but there are already signs the transition could be happening soon. Their 9AM newscast was recently re-branded as Memphis This Morning (which may or may not be temporary).

Camille Connor has joined WMC as a reporter.

Over at WREG, longtime weekend meteorologist Austen Onek departed the station earlier this year.

Wendy Nations has since replaced Austin Onek on weekends, though I'm not sure if her role is temporary or permanent.

Sky 5 was severely damaged when the tornado (then at EF2 intensity) hit Tune Airport. When I first heard that the helicopter was parked there while watching a live stream of their 7:00 a.m. newscast Wednesday morning, thought it seemed odd, considering that many news helicopters are housed on their station’s studio grounds, not at general aviation airports like John C. Tune Airport. Considering the airport suffered $93 million in damage and WTVF’s studios escaped damage, putting the helicopter at the WTVF building would have prevented this.

That may not have been an option for WTVF to consider, especially with their studios being in close proximity to the Tennessee State Capitol and adjacent government buildings. Plus, the station itself is landlocked, and acquiring land to accommodate a helipad would've likely come at a premium for them as opposed to using John C Tune.

Seems basic. Not bad but not amazing.

Maybe the wrong forum for this but million dollar question. Does Tegna drop the "Local" branding from WATN and WOI I know that was a Nexstar thing. Guess we will find out in the coming days and weeks.

That's a most definite as using Local 'Channel Number' as branding isn't so much of a thing anymore except for maybe a handful of TV stations these days. They'll most likely be re-branded as WATN 24 and WOI 5 on the non-news side of things. As for newscasts, a return to the generic "Channel 5 News" or "News 5" branding would probably be the most logical direction WOI to go at this point. WATN may require some "creativity" to say the least as a means of moving ratings in the right direction.

They definitely will. It doesn't comport with their branding policies. ABC24.com redirects to LocalMemphis.com currently. So ABC24.com will become the root domain. WeAreIowa.com may remain the same, but it could redirect to ABC5Iowa.com as well, to align closer to Tegna's branding standards.

On a side note, WOITV.com re-directs to WeAreIowa.com, so that should give you an idea on what direction they might be going.

Why is WATN there? What station represents the First News at 9:00 mic flag? I don't remember that one.

Not sure why, considering they're a TEGNA station now, but Jeez Louise does KTXL need some new mic flags.

I'm just guessing, but I suppose WATE would be the one.  Geographically speaking, it would make more sense if you're comparing Chattanooga to the nearest Nexstar station.  But WKRN could certainly pick up the story as well.

Kind of surprised Nexstar hasn't bought any station in Chattanooga, though.  It would make sense from their point of view.

Realistically speaking, Nexstar would have to purchase the assets of Morris Multimedia (owners of WDEF, a former Park/MG station pre-LIN merger) just to get into that market since Sinclair owns one station (WTVC) and manages two others (WDSI; WFLI), while Sarkes Tarzian (which Gray owns a partial stake in) owns the other (WRCB).

Most of the current gfx packages by Gray are pretty solid, but it amazes me how messed up the implementation can sometimes get.

To each their own. I mean, the white-and-blue look is a very good package when used correctly as intended, but there will always be those who will manage to botch it.

The ex-Tribune stations, debatable. WNEP, sure. KFSM and WQAD, debatable. WPMT and WTIC were already down that path.

The ex-Nexstar stations have nothing to lose and in a way got upgraded. A #3 station in a 2 station market, a #4 station in a 3 station market, and a #4 station in a market that barely supports 4 news departments, nothing setting the world on fire.

Translation, if anyone on here that lives in the markets of Hartford, Fort Smith and the Quad Cities most likely you're welcoming Tegna with open arms (same thing with Des Moines, Memphis and Huntsville) it's Pennsylvania (WPMT/WNEP) that are a bit up in arms about Tegna.

In the case of WATN/WLMT, they were already at rock bottom to begin with ratings-wise, so it's not like TEGNA could've done any worse for them. As much as Nexstar was willing to invest in making the duopoly competitive, it wasn't enough to move the needle in the right direction.

The initial plan from Landmark was to sell WTVF to Bonten. Needless to say, it's good thing they went with Journal instead.

They definitely dodged a bullet when the Bonten deal fell through. That company was Sinclair-lite in every aspect.

  10. I kinda feel like this discussion over the National Anthem should be moved over into its own thread. With that being said, I don't see why restarting that tradition should be treated as such a big deal. I mean TV stations had been doing that stuff for years before daily sign-offs became a thing of the past. At least with what Gray has done is make their version tasteful enough to recognize all of the things that make America a special and diverse place.

I still remember when stations were playing this version by the Air Force back in the day:

Knowing how cheap most of Gray's graphics packages look, this was the only thing that I feared would happen to the ex-Raycom stations when the merger was announced; and it's already happening in a couple of markets (Memphis & East Texas)

In all fairness, typeface aside, WMC executed this particular package much better than its East Texas counterparts.

Somehow I ended up on the WSYX talent page. I count 35 people. I know at least one of them is a Sinclair reporter, but is their news department really this large?

It makes sense when you're operating a virtual duopoly with WTTE via LMA.

Apart from Kristine Frazao and Scott Thurman (who are both from corporate out of the DC bureau and shouldn't be considered as local talent), they have roughly 12 anchors (at least 3 with dual roles as anchors and reporters, and 3 who are also I-Team investigators), 7 general assignment reporters, 5 meteorologists, 1 sports director (Clay Hall), 1 traffic reporter/anchor (Katie McKee), 1 "Mobile Trak" guy (Mike Kilburn), 1 consumer investigator (Jesse Pagan), 3 MMJs, and two feature and entertainment people. And that's between BOTH stations.

I really wish Sinclair's stations had their talent pages better organized.

$535 million? (Per Business First.) For just those two stations? That's an indicator of how dominant those two stations were in their markets.

Think of it this way. Cox had how many stations and they sold for 3 billion? In other words, not too many buyers out there with the Deep Pockets to buy these stations.

Cox had a baker's dozen of stations (13 total), so that's about $230.77 million per station compared to $267.5 million for each of the two stations the Wolfes sold to TEGNA. A difference of roughly $37 million.

I'm not surprised Dispatch cashed out when they did. The signs were there. Just didn't expect Deathstar 2.0(?) to pick them up.
