Fun Fact: Hot Haus' Matt Quinn is based in Cleveland and has done a lot of work with both WOIO and WKYC.

Quinn was behind OIO's famous graphical looks through most of the 2000's.

Not a stretch to think they went local again with a familiar face.

Much like the Nashville stations do with 615 (WCPM)

He's definitely been busy considering some of his recent works and collaborations as of late.

For the past few weeks, WATE-TV in Knoxville has been broadcasting from its newsroom, because WATE will be getting a new set along with new graphics. Although I have not seen any sneak peeks about it on TV, it will be interesting to see what the new set will look like when it is finished.

One of two options: the Dalek Desk or the WISH-TV Special.

WMC weekend morning anchor Jerica Phillips has announced she's leaving the station to become Deputy Chief of Communications with Shelby County Schools. Her last day on-air will be March 7th.

Jerica has been with WMC since 2008, except for a two-year break somewhere in there where she went to work as a Social Marketing Coordinator for Shelby County government. According to her bio, though, she still freelanced for WMC during that time, before returning full time. Former weekday evening anchor Ursula Madden is also a communications officer these days, working with the current Memphis mayoral administration.

This is nothing new. If I remember correctly, Kristen Tallent (former anchor/reporter at WHBQ) also works with SCS as a public information officer these days in addition to her work as a spokesperson for a couple of local businesses in the city.

From a group that no longer cares about news to a group that's has a very heavy-Republican view, welcome to D.C. Cheryl.

And yet, she came from a TEGNA station that was competing against a Sinclair-owned station in Seattle before getting hired by the Smith Empire to compete against her now-former employer in DC. This should be fun.

Renderon has a history of reusing previous packages. The old Journal package was recycled from an older WDIV package. It was just kind of simplified so Journal could rebuild it for VizRT.

And yet, the final version WDIV wound up using was butchered enough to where it no longer looked like the same package Renderon pitched to them.

Even WBRZ's former look was a recycled package that turned out to be an improvement over Scripps' first standardized look back in the mid-2000s.

Considering KIII/Corpus got a used set from WUSA and KCEN/Waco got one from KUSA, I’d be shocked if KWES got something new. Both Waco and Corpus are larger markets than Midland. (Waco is actually more than 50 markets bigger.) WFAA essentially refreshed its old set. KVUE and KENS got the set in a box. Neither KVUE nor KENS had a “fancy” set worth saving like the two recycled ones mentioned above, but who knows. Maybe KWES will get the KHOU temporary set when they move to their new digs. Or not.

Or they could wind up with WVEC's old set if they didn't already throw the whole thing in the trash.

Expect changes coming to NewsWest 9 and Toledo 11 News. In the coming months... Tegna-Set-In-A-Box, new graphics and C Clarity.

In terms of graphics and music, those are definite. In terms of sets, not right away as WTOL's existing one is only a couple of years old, and KWES is more likely to receive a hand-me-down set than a Jack Morton/PDG design.

  8. PBS Evening News is way superior news product and with no commericals they can inform the audience more in 30 minutes then commerical evening news.

When did PBS NewsHour get cut down to a 30-minute program?

Lester is not the problem. To me he is only doing what he is told. An insider told me that after Brian Williams scandal, Andrew Lack is putting a tight leash on the evening news.

The buck definitely stops with Andy Lack and how he has handled the scandals at NBC News. It may be time for him to go before long.

  9. Tennessee in general is exploding. As a newly minted Nashville resident, I can attest to this by the rising prices for cost of living and rent. I believe Knoxville and Nashville are already overtaking Memphis in growth.

I know Nashville has the largest population and TV market (DMA 28) in the state, but Knoxville and Chattanooga are still well behind Memphis in terms of size (although Knoxville is currently 61st DMA-wise compared to Memphis, which is hovering around the 50s at the moment).

  10. A great honor indeed for the recently retired Baird, and the soon-to-be retired Bob Grip, who will be stepping down sometime next year at WALA.

I believe Byron Day is going to be his replacement, as he has assumed anchoring the 5 and 10pm shows so far...

I haven't seen Byron Day in years since his days at WHBQ, so I was surprised to see him pop up over at WALA-TV recently.

  11. I'm going to call it right now, Nexstar will gain a duopoly in Knoxville while also acquiring KTEN in Sherman/Ada

The only question is who gets KAKELand? (since Nexstar already owns KSN) my money for that would be on Standard or Hearst acquiring KAKELand

Just throwing it out there, but what if TEGNA had an interest in getting the KAKEland cluster?

  12. Pointed to Whoopi and suggested she suffered from “Trump Derangment Syndrome” a term the president has apparently started using to describe his affect on those who disagree with him.

It’s really quite sad if we’re honest - about a year ago I decided to just check out from following this administration and his antics coupled with those who blindly defend his blatant lies. I followed closely this week with the Russia investigation and already just wish I hadn’t.

You're not the only one who feels that way. The level of toxicity in our politics today is at a level that has not been seen in a very long time. Fox News, for its part, has been fanning the flames on this even before Trump came into power. It has now become the new normal.

  14. WHBQ has hired Elisabeth D'Amore as their newest meteorologist at the station (replacing Lindsey Monroe, who is now a meteorologist at WTHR in Indianapolis). She previously worked at WTVM/WXTX in Columbus, GA. Her first day on the job was yesterday.
