WEVU/WZVN 40th anniversary clip.
I'm impressed they did that. I've been wanting to get in contact with the author of an Amazon e-book about WEVU's early history to see if he could provide info on their early news themes.

WTSP finally hires a news director...
Kelly Frank comes to WTSP from WBNS in Columbus where she was ND since 2015:

Very interesting considering Tegna's approach to news is so different from WBNS, a station long considered to be the market leader. Meanwhile, WTSP's ratings are usually in last place, except in late news.

Al Schottelkotte was, according to some sources, the highest rated local anchor in America. This is the only video I've been able to locate on YT:
And here is the audio opening for his newscast (1950s?):

It's the KWWL News at 6 from the summer of 1994:
The theme is heard in full at 8:41 and 18:32 — what is it from? Also several KWWL promos voiced by That Guy™.
For the summer of '94, an EMAIL in the close is way cool!
Is that the Wow & Flutter theme? There is an ID toward the end that sounds like "Newschannel" but the rest doesn't sound like it.

Cool WJZ close from 10/31/1980 with a cut from "Oxygene Part II" by Jean Michel Jarre:

I think I found the elusive WXFL/WFLA "Spirit of Tampa Bay" full open. Start at 2:14.
I may ask him to post the open on its own. He was kind enough to post the WTSP promo I wanted to see. Too bad it sounds like the audio is distorted on that WXFL open.

Here's a weird one. I found a newscast opening from Dayton TV station WLWD (Now WDTN) and the opening is the same look that the Capital Cities TV stations used at the time. CapCities never even owned the station.
Sheryl Previll later went by "Sheryl Browne" in Cleveland and Tampa
Looks like a young Don Postles worked at WLWD

Don't think this goodie from WPLG has been posted yet-1986 open with the unknown theme:
This needs to be in a permanent archive! A perfect Ernie Anderson voiceover:
Take a look at this slogan-does the unknown theme having something to do with "We're with You"-an ABC tie-in maybe?

Figured I’d add a screen grab of WLKY circa 1987 in here too.
Graphics Express comes to mind. Popular set designer in the '80s. Don't know much other than that.

WDBO is a station we don't have a lot of footage from considering they were No. 1 in Orlando prior to WFTV's rise in the late 70's. The clips I've seen from WDBO have been kind of lackluster, including this one:

Did that challenge last long?
Not really. They tried an hour long 6 o'clock format from '86-'87 that apparently didn't perform well. Also by '88, WXFL had revamped their news team and in '89, WTSP suffered a computer hacking scandal.
Still, the station had come a long way from it's WLCY days, when it had a terrible news reputation.

WTSP news promo from 1986 when, believe it or not, they challenged ratings king WTVT for the lead:

I just watched the GMA interview the FL couple.
Why on earth did they choose to conduct the interview with the streetside window behind the couple?

KMTV promos for two very well-known station alumni.
Dick Fletcher was an idol of mine growing up. I recently learned that he earned his weather chops working alongside Charlie Umpenhour at KOA-TV (later of WTOL) in Denver. "Fletcher's Fearless Forecast" was the title of Fletch's weather segment at KOA.
KMTV had many great talents pass through in the late 70's: Mary Hart, Chuck Roberts, Dale Hansen, Dick Fletcher
EDIT: Sounds like another custom theme from Omaha!

Interesting glimpse of the Tampa/St. Pete market after the "Big Switch" of Dec. '94. Mostly from WFLA but some WTVT clips at the end.
- WFLA attached the NBC peacock to their logo bug, but did not officially update their "NewsChannel 8" logo until fall '95. At this point, they were still using their 1993 'tabloid' era graphics and set, which would change (thankfully!).
- WTVT showed almost no sign of being a Fox affiliate. Their bug had the '13' logo and 'WTVT' calls
- WTSP (not in this video) debuted a new set in Sept. 1994 and a promo campaign, you can view on YT

And then was replaced by Jesse Johnson.
And speaking of John McKnight, this WSB weekend tease from 1985 shows both the old “2” logo, as well as their current one being phased in:
Did WSB ever use "Turn To News"? It's listed on the NMSA, but by all indications, they were actually using this electronic theme:

He did commercials for Runza in the '80s.
Btw did he ever do any other station besides Runza and the four stations listed?
I'm surprised he wasn't more widely used....while his voice may not have been "Voice of God" like Charlie Van Dyke, this guy's voice is buttery smooth

A KMTV bumper for Divorce Court at the end — who is the VO??? He’s done other stations out in the Midwest, mainly WCMH, WTHR, and even rival KETV. Been trying to find out who he is for years.
He did commercials for Runza in the '80s.
Answer: Jim Morgan (according to a YouTube post of Omaha commercials)

KXTV 1997 (?) bumper. Definitely a Gari signature, but does that mean TIYN began in '97?
Confirmed this is from 1997, so the NMSA must be off or their '96 theme was from Gari
