Comcast wants the FCC to issue a ruling that Nexstar should be attributed ownership of WPIX New York , which would make it in violation of the commission's 39% cap on broadcast national audience reach. The cable operator claims Nexstar’s divestiture of the station to meet FCC requirements in its acquisition of Tribune was a “sham.””

Yes! Please call a spade a spade. This LMA operation sidecar bullsh*t must end.

I wouldn't be surprised if Scripps does this for Michigan since they own 3 TV stations in Michigan and have MI News 24/7 as I see Scripps expanding it across the country where they have a few TV stations in many states.

At this point, they have the resources to go ahead and completely shutter NewsNet with Local24 programing.

I standby what I said earlier, WJZY & WMYT will be sold again is why what is going on with on-air talent departures. Nexstar only wants the stations because FTS was willing to pawn off for Seattle and Milwaukee Fox affiliates. Nexstar is cheap and bad for business in a rapidly growing, major market like Charlotte. It's why Nexstar is dismantling great locally recognized talent by ending or not renewing all of this valuable talent. You also going to continue seeing this newsroom set...

Uh. No... I have inside information indicating that Nexstar is actively investing in WJZY & WMYT. They are planning to keep it.

I'm still not a fan of the anchor reading the open where a professional VO normally would. It lacks authority and sounds too casual.

Contracts for voice actors can cost in excess of $100,000 in a market. TEGNA designed this brand specifically with the intention of eliminating the voice acting budget... Most stations did try without but learned that it didn't work well.

Hopefully any of it left rubs off on the rest of the group.  Still a travesty how WBNS and WTHR were swallowed up by them.

As for WXIA, yes it is a nice improvement.

Yeah, but not the best execution.

News Director Tim Wieland from KCNC has confirmed via Twitter that Michelle Griego is leaving KPIX and will be heading back home to anchor CBS4 Mornings.

Michelle tweeted she will be heading home in August.

Not sure who will replace Michele’s position... The only candidates come to mind are Anne Makovec, Emily Turner, maybe Veronica De La Cruz if she comes back since she’s been on LOA for health and personal reasons.

Good! I was wondering. I'm glad she's coming home.

I wonder if Mekialaya White is going to stick on weekends since Kathy retired.

This strikes me as an unnecessary fix of something that isn't broken:

What is up with this flat trend?? It's like news graphic design is getting cheaper and unimaginative as time goes on. Sports networks like ESPN, TNT, NBA TV, and FS1 are really exceeding news outlets at set and graphical design.

Time to render is cheaper and uses fewer resources.

Discovery is trying to diversify its portfolio. It doesn't have any scripted/entertainment cable networks in the US, which makes its streaming service pretty niche. But buying/merging with Warner,  Discovery can reach a more mainstream audience than it does now and it'll make Discovery+ more appealing to more people.

I think one thing attractive here is the CW. Discovery can add additional 'unscripted' programming to the CW and reduce the production costs while increasing revenue. The CW is still such a minor network that the amount of scripted programming it has is expensive compared to it's ratings. So it has a way thin margins. I think Discovery can boost that. I also wouldn't be surprised if Scripps spins off their networks again and Discovery, along with the vast library of WarnerMedia, buys that up too. Considering how many libraries they have and the studio accessibility, owning those assets as well would make sense.

    With regard to the name:

I know it sucks for viewers who just want to be entertained (nee watch DVDs and BluRays), but time moves forward instead of backwards. Maybe in the next decade we could see a return to form.

Ahahahaha! No. We won't. TV stations are going to become less relevant over time.

So in other words, it doesn't matter if a syndicated rerun (in which you can watch on streaming and physical media (re: DVD/BluRay) would bring higher viewers or say a syndicated talk show, in which the station has to slice it's revenue pie, with local programming (namely news), they get all the revenue and reinvest it in other properties like (newsvans, helicopters, drones), just to name a few.

Sure, if they want to use it as part of the operating expenses or give it to shareholders as dividends.

Not sure if a syndicated AM show is worth having for Nexstar, because WJW's AM newscast is number one.

Back to Scripps, how are The List and RTM doing in the ratings?

One market's ratings does not a large group's profits make. Nexstar may feel that losing 2-3 morning hours of local news programming across 40+ markets is worth it if the margin is made up in spades.

The ratings (and ad-buy revenue) is very strong in proportion to the overall production costs.

I would like to learn more about the decisions in terms of profit margins in buying syndicated programming versus producing an expanded newscast.

I can't speak to the specifics, but from a rudimentary analysis, the collective number of staff hired on a per-station basis to produce an additional newscast is greater than that required to produce syndicated programming, especially with lower production costs like The List and Right This Minute as opposed to the former Arsenio Hall Show or Jeopardy. As a group like Scripps buys more stations, the overall savings further nets out.

This is why I fully expect Nexstar to produce a NewsNation AM newscast for all of their Fox, CW and MyNetTV affils. The investment made in NewsNation is already significant and has no signs of waning (though I would argue about value for the Nexstar, Inc. brand entirely, because it's not their core competency). Therefore a syndicated morning program would A. Reduce staffing needs at many Nexstar stations. B. Drive viewers to the NewsNation cable channel. It's really a no brainer to me. A PM national for those stations a half hour earlier, could drive people to the network as well, if used to tease stories you'll only see on the Network.
