Or KWTX in Waco - I remember during the 80s heading back to College Station from Dallas, there would be folks parked at rest stops along I-35 “tailgating” with a TV to watch the Cowboys on a Sunday afternoon when the Cowboys didn’t sell out....

I believe it was NBC Primary at that time, based on both the news theme (which included the NBC sonic logo in it), as well as NBC programming (Tonight Show) - but I think this timeframe was close to the network switch, as there weren’t any network identifying promotions, but just generic slides for the network programs, and the Open didn’t include the earlier video with the shots including the Proud N logo J

I wouldn’t call these rip-offs. They’re numbers in a specific font - that’s the same as saying WJLA’s circle 7 logo is a rip-off of WABC, KABC, KGO, WLS’s logo, since WJLA isn’t an ABC owned and operated station... A rip-off isn’t using the same package as another unrelated station. A rip-off is trying to create a similar looking package (usually on the cheap), but not pulling it off well. For example, this KALB newscast open (not sure if it was used on air or not): https://youtu.be/dLlFpX68s68 at duplicating the WNBC’s 2010 open: https://youtu.be/5Mk0FFM8nrE IMHO is a distinct ripoff... It appears to be LaCrosse, WI (based on the sticker barely visible). J

My parents (70s) have their routine (Dallas): TV is never on before noon Noon is CNN Off mid-afternoon 4pm - CBS11 5pm - WFAA8 5:30 - ABC World New Tonight 6pm - Jeopardy (TXA21) 6:30 - Wheel of Fortune (CBS11) Prime time varies, but usually the TV is off at 7 - unless Dad goes upstairs for a Ranger’s Game; Mom stays downstairs reading, knitting or possibly watching something previously recorded. 10pm - CBS11 News 10:35 - Colbert They complain about the cost, but when I suggest a cheaper package - that shuts down the conversation... Because they might want to watch HBO or Showtime or VOD or... Whereas I’ve become television’s worst nightmare: someone in their 50s who doesn’t watch TV...

Amarillo is a “fresh out” market - kiddos right out of college. I had a couple of college mates who started there right out of school (and then moved up and out after a year or two) - especially on the weekend, where crews are very thin. i’d just chalk it up to lack of experience. J

But also using the slogan/theme for nearly 30 years! (1978-2006) J

Glenwood Springs (and thus KREG) is in the Denver market - 1.438% on the cap Dkenver provides, but it’s a VHF station (so no discount), and assuming Nexstar is somewhat close, selling off this station could provide cap space for several smaller markets (easily 3 sub-50 markets without any discounts).... KXAN’s C.O.P.S. program preceded the Fox show by several years - airing in the 1am hour, there was no confusion between the two...

Watching WCBS at noon on my flight to Dallas, they mentioned 3 people leaving... J

How? Other than the 12 being inside the circle (negative space), I see little resemblance. if you follow that logic, then KTVU’s logo is a ripoff of any logo inside a circle prior to 1975.... J

As for WSIL, they used a font/logotype that other stations used - KHTV/39 in Houston used a similar (of not the same) 3 in their 39 logo. Back in the day, your options were more limited, mostly, since you didn’t have millions of fonts to chose from - and everything was edited by hand, be it using something like ChartPak rub-on letters or film/pictures from a typesetter to create ads. As for WPSD and WKMG, they both use the “Local #” branding, possibly from the same creative design agency, but the fonts and obliqueness of the graphic are distinctly different. For a better example, compare WCBS, WBBM and KCBS’s logos, or any of the numerous ABC Circle-7 logos...

Sorry this is a bit late, but they’ve been doing this on and off in recent times (IIRC, they did it about a year ago, the stopped). The also rebroadcast KGWN.2’s Northern Colorado News 5 (from the folks in Little Rock) years ago. J

IIRC, KDFI early on in the 84-85 timeframe also used Texas 27. I’ll see if I can find videotape thereof... Jim

KBTX had the same promo: Buy the Brazos Valley First - same graphics (save the logo/tagline), and music. It looks like it was a package created and marketed to regional stations to encourage people to shop locally, vs. driving to Houston (or other large city) to do their shopping. All I know is that the quality of shopping available in Bryan/College Station improved significantly in the late 80s while I was at Texas A&M

Yup! Tried to compete with WLIO, until Block purchased the stations after successfully wrestling away the Fox affiliation onto a digital subchannel of WLIO. Jim

As we close out the year (and close in on the 20th anniversary of the "end" of KNWS/51 in Houston - the final full newscast was January 2, 1998), I'm throwing out a few "newscasts from the beyond grave" - newscasts from stations no longer airing in-house newscasts. Enjoy! Well, if you had the equivalent of NBC or CBS running the station as an O&O with standard graphics across all of the stations, it can be done... And in typical fashion, news has been cut from 30 minutes to 15 minutes - granted, SP&M have access to more of the RFO is run by France Télévisions (France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5, France Ô) - they're (IMHO) the 800-lb. Gorilla in French TV... J
