Wow, this is a very interesting development. John is the life of WCBS morning news (and of course Elise was great, but the energy with John was always superior in my opinion). I agree that the whole "team weather" thing was unnecessary, but it was different. Also with Tony, John, Lonnie, Vanessa and Craig Allen, there are more meteorologists hired at WCBS than shifts as defined in the past. So it is possible that he is being let go, as horrible as that would be. I do like the theory of John handling noon and 5pm perhaps when Lonnie expands duties for the CBS Evening News. Hopefully he's not being pushed out completely. That would be so unfair for all that he has done for that station, but it happened to Andrea Grymes and Dana Tyler.

Agreed, this is a huge improvement over the previous backdrop.

I must say I agree with this assessment, I do not see Mike as Bill's successor but that is only my opinion. I would much prefer David Novarro; Mike seems a good fit for the mornings now with Shirleen and I don't think they'd want to mess that up. But reality does seem to suggest that they are grooming Mike for that position (by frequently having him appear on the Friday 11pm in addition to his morning shift.) Another wildcard would be to bring out Phil Lipof back to WABC in a more prestigious role although I don't see them doing that.

Now that you mention it, Star would have been the perfect next traffic anchor if they wanted to go that route (especially since she already did traffic a fair amount). So now they are short a traffic and weather anchor. I wonder if they'll move Chris Cimino back to mornings or weekends, or maybe put Stacy Ann back on weekends. I noticed Greg Mocker also filled in on traffic this week. Makes sense since he is their transportation reporter.
-
Although it could be just tonight's circumstance, Maurice did appear with Kristine tonight at 11pm. The most logical sense would be Kristine/Dick at 5pm and Maurice/Kristine 11pm, but who knows with their apparent solo anchor push. I also don't recall any mention on WCBS about the promotions of Maurice and Lonnie. I also noticed Lonnie using the "virtual weather studio" a lot more the last few weeks.

Again tonight, the 6:00 news is airing on My9 due to football. These must be the initiatives of the new news director as of this Summer.

It should be interesting to see what they end up doing if Devlin is promoted to main anchor, fill-in anchor, or perhaps even weekend anchor (if they wanted to pair someone with Jessica Moore). I think viewers would react much better to a Kristine and Cindy or Kristine and Dick pairing, compared to a random new guy, but we'll see what WCBS has up their sleeves. Also, long day for Mary Calvi yesterday. She anchored morning, noon with Cindy (until 12:30 when Doug Williams was brought in), and 5pm with Dick Brennan.
-
For what its worth, the 11pm is almost always anchored solo if Maurice or Kristine are not there together. As far as WCBS is concerned, I'd personally love to see Cindy, Dick, or Alice get promotions in the evenings but I don't see them going that route.
-
I think they signed off the best they could with an ode to all the jingles once played on 880, Wayne Cabot naming so many of the iconic voices we've heard over the years, and ending with an excerpt of John Lennon's "Imagine". He ended with "for the final time, this is WCBS, New York". After a minute of dead air, an ESPN program came on. For those wondering, they continued to do traffic and weather together until 11:38pm. Yes, 1010 will be there, but New York has lost a friendly, unbiased, and trustworthy source of news on the airwaves.
-
Exactly- I would think Maurice would at least give up the 5pm to prepare for the evening news. That would be the perfect place for Cindy if they went that route, or Dick Brennan if they wanted to (re) promote him.

Sad to hear Cindy's 9am show will not air on TV anymore (according to guides it doesn't look like it is moving to WLNY). So maybe it will be streaming only? Either way I hope that they will make Cindy permanent anchor of the noon show, or give her a prominent role.
-
I think for CBS2 CBS News New York, the focus is on digital streaming, so they want to capitalize on having newscasts for the digital audience, regardless of airing on WLNY. I think the same goes for the expanded morning news hours. I think adding them to the WLNY schedule is just an after-thought, not like it was from 2012-2019. I'd also be interested to see CBS News New York's streaming ratings. WNYW doesn't have the streaming network of WCBS, so I'm a bit surprised they didn't put some effort into a new live WWOR newscast. It is good to see they put some more effort into "Good Night New York", though!

I noticed that Alex Lee was dropped from a recent morning show promo, and her bio was scrapped off the website and any promotions. Quite strange, something must have happened. Dan did NY Living today with Marysol, Kendis did it the other day. I think Julie Millet has been covering traffic and wrote she will be filling in the next few weeks. I think Alex's last day on air was August 2nd.

Yeah it turns out these moves were nothing to get excited about. Although I did not know that the 6pm news is now an hour on FOX5 (likely to compete with the PIX11 Evening News).
-
Whoa, 8pm news on My9 to compete with CBS News New York on WLNY. And 11pm news to compete with ABC, CBS and NBC? Interesting moves! Also surprising they're doing this yet don't have a weekend morning newscast. Edit: the 11pm is called "Good Day New York at Night" and seems to be a re-airing or a "best of GDNY" show, so it will not be hard news or continuation of the 10pm.
-
Very strange..It seems it was just for today and it will air as normal going forward. Don't know whose decision that was. I'd hate to see the weekend AM news canceled since Kirstin and John are great together.
-
Anchoring tonight at 5pm is Doug Williams and Jessica Moore. Although he's not my favorite and I'd much prefer Dick, I could easily see Doug being part of a promotion.

So glad to hear Maurice will be a large part of the new CBS Evening news, he deserves it! Kristine I think is also worthy of a national position if they were to offer it to her. I think now it's more likely that Maurice will at least have a reduced schedule at WCBS in a few months but we'll see. Also Lonnie will now be "chief weathercaster". It is mentioned in the press release that Maurice will still have a "regular presence at WCBS". https://www.paramountpressexpress.com/cbs-news-and-stations/shows/cbs-evening-news-with-norah-odonnell/releases/?view=110106-cbs-news-announces-new-ensemble-team-and-editorial-leadership-for-the-cbs-evening-news

I agree on that front with Tony Dokoupil. I actually think Maurice DuBois might be one of the better options, but viewers outside of New York would likely find him an unfamiliar face. Dick Brennan could seamlessly replace him at 5,6 and 11pm on WCBS since he fills in quite often and already has established chemistry with Kristine. Another out-of-the-box option could be Bill Whitaker. Yes, he is older, but he would bring a well-known, calming presence to the evening news. Also from 60 minutes they could bring out Sharyn Alfonsi or even Cecilia Vega (if they want someone younger).
-
I think* this marks the first time WPIX ever simulcasted News Nation, but I think it was definitely the right move (why scramble for local coverage when the national team is doing it fine?). They also did well at 10pm by having Dan not as co-anchor but as contributor to handle live interviews.
-
There can be an argument made for both cases. The argument in favor of bringing in the A team is that more people will be tuning into the news than usual on a Sunday, so the station wishes to highlight the main team (in this case Kristine/Maurice and Bill/Sade) as opposed to its weekend team. On the other hand, it can be a bit dramatic and unnecessary for stations to go out of their way to bring in a main anchor (like having Mike Marza come in when Joe and Tonya could've handled it just fine, same with bringing in Kristine and Maurice as opposed to Jessica Moore). I think WPIX handled it well at 10pm, Kaity anchored solo as usual but Dan was brought in not as coanchor, but as contributor to handle live interviews.
-
David Novarro and Sandra Bookman anchored the 11pm tonight. Bill Ritter was brought in for the 11pm last night, and Shirleen joined Pedro this morning.
-
Kristine Johnson joined Jessica Moore for the 11pm tonight

When networks or sister stations help out
NYNewsCoverage replied to Chicago2008's topic in General TV
With WCBS, it has becoming increasingly frequent for an O&O meteorologist to step in during summer vacation time. Also for WCBS, the fact that this even happened was pretty remarkable but so was all of March 2020. If not for KCBS or another O&O helping out, there likely would've been no WCBS news in an urgent time. I remember they even had to use the Yes network studios in Stamford,CT as a homebase for a bit.
