I wish that political ads didn't exist. But seriously, WTVD shouldn't be forced to air anything they don't want to. I'm a Trump supporter, and if I owned WTVD, I wouldn't air any political ads from either side. They cause too much drama and conflict. Inform yourself. Don't let politicians do it for you.

You would also be out of business.

As a Gen Z’er, here’s my take. I think the graphics are fine. Yeah they’re basic and bland, but when I watch the news, I don’t want the graphics to distract from the content. Having a fast paced 3D design is good for sports to hype up the viewers, so why do we need that for news? I don’t want to be amped up when I watch stuff about the latest robbery/murder/bakery that sells cupcakes for dogs.

Plus, young people are obsessed with aesthetic. Just look at Instagram. A flashy 3D graphics package doesn’t fit with that. So, if you want to appeal to millennials, a flat package won’t guarantee it, but it’s less likely to turn them off.

Sure the package isn’t perfect. I would want to bold some of the text to make it stand out, and some of the animations could be smoother, but again, it’s fine.

*cough* The demos they are looking for and will need to survive past about 2035. *cough*

Yeah, no. This is design basics 101. Vertical shape transitions are so basic:

Clearly my comment went right over your head but thanks for showing how “Easy” it is... I don’t do art, never could, so this means nothing to me. I just know what it looks like and how it behaves.

As someone who feels lukewarm, at best, on this new package, this is honestly why it doesn't click for me. You just outlined several little adjustments that would elevate it, while adhering to modern design. Attention to detail like that wouldn't abandon simplicity, which is a perfectly fine direction, but simple and boring two different things, and this leans decidedly more towards the latter.

As for the WLS comparison, this is, to me, where the similarities begin and end.

No way like WLS, there more graphical and fast.

While that’s largely true the same basic design principles apply. Boring flat bars and large full size rectangular graphics. Tabs galore. Ghosted logos in full screen graphics. There’s a lot of we do that too just not as well in there. It isn’t as flashy, there’s are also older.

Looks like WEWS is finally showing symptoms of the Scripps-itis..

    Here's a screencap from Mike DeWine's presser....

Not bad... the 5 looks halfway decent like that.

From across the group? 30 people all in some form of production and management.

From the viewer end I’m hearing a lot of positive things.. if you’re Management who’s opinion matters more? The employees or the viewers?

Plus like the previous package these will be modified over time as stations adapt them to suit their needs.

Yes, and how do you think the station staff feel about this package?

I think it depends on the station and the person. Some like it and some hate it. Same as everything else on earth. And there’s a lot of stations and people to ask too so opinions will vary.

I showed you Hothaus stuff too and the LEX 18 package is from one of two former owner of GO (as is the current WLS from the other owner, Ruth Dial). Do you want me to demo every original package out there from a design agency?

Nah... but from what I’ve heard from others people are warming up to these... If done right they look darn good,  it’s really time for you to embrace the dark side my friend...

You clearly aren't a graphic design. Spinney 3D stuff. HAHAHA!

Giant Octopus at work. Beats the pants off what you’ve been trying to get me to buy... actually the graphics I showed don’t look bad at age 11... They aged well on my TV too when I screen mirrored them. I’m not a graphic designer I’m a News consumer... There’s a reason they don’t just let the graphic designers work and see what happens...

I'm not being literal. And Scripps version looks nothing like WLS's package.... I mean if we're going to ask for a standardized look, How about the KPTV package?

If I wanted it to do all that I would have stuck to the V2 graphics... they already did all that spinny 3D stuff. A different live bug, some highlighting flashes on the L3’s and a background behind the bug and maybe some darkening of the gradient in the background logo on full screen graphics and it would be an excellent look. It doesn’t need many tweaks to look really good. You’re showing me a lot of small market looking stuff that was cool in major markets a long time ago... any comment on my original suggestion? Flashy but not overly so with 3D elements and flatness...

    Something like this:

And I thought swooshes in mine were pushing it... no thanks. There is too much going on in those graphics and it’s distracting... Plus it would never fit some of their stations styles... like glove on a foot type of bad fit. It’s  nice for Lexington I guess.

Scripps has essentially created someone’s watered down steam rollerized dream version of what WLS has... it could use some small things but it looks pretty good on TV when implemented correctly...

I want a number more layers, light flares, 3D animations with models of multiple objects and several Mograph effect, custom transition mattes, a variety of textures, etc.

How 2007-ish... this sort of thing isn’t really in for news.

Would something like this make you feel better?

Ugh. Just so blah. Barley serviceable. Such an uninspired package.

    Case in point:

That video actually proves the opposite. You can do a lot with it if you throw a little effort into it. You’ve never really been very clear exactly what you want it to do...

  15. Well... the open is generic in a “taking action for you, you’re watching 7 Action News” way. No times or anything in the open which sucks. The graphics seem to move a little faster than others we have seen. There are 3 transition graphics: ghosted Circle 7 in the background without logo, silver circle 7 Logo With ghosted 7 in the background and ghosted circle 7 logo with ghosted 7 in the background. Weather graphics have had a minor refresh on the maps to add the cartoonish suns and all the other graphics look as advertised there. Several of the L3’s had no text message tab on them. It’s a much better look and I hope they lean on that heavily. Music was the midday theme. I took pictures of most of this if somebody wants to see them I’ll post whatever you’re interested in.

If anything Scripps could potentially be looking at more stations however, I just can't imagine them with Meredith's stations because in spite of the overlaps it's just simply not a good fit for them and I think Scripps has bigger fish to go after than Meredith

Why is it not a good fit?

Per @froyo49 the theme is now on News Music Now at http://www.newsmusicnow.com/news-music/#scripps . More extensive cuts than available on NMSA or Stephen Arnold’s YouTube.

My takeaway: They should make a slightly more serious version of the sports theme and use that as the main news theme.

I’m thinking the political or midday themes as the main theme... it’ll be interesting to evaluate whether every station used the themes as described by track name at some point. I have the feeling some of them will change up which theme is which.

    Let's think about this:

Since the sale of the RSNs by Disney to Sinclair (and even during the approval process of the sale) they've lost contracts with Dish, and several streamming providers (partially with YouTube TV) to carry the RSNs. That coupled with the lack of sports is really exposing and truly showing how much "value" the RSNs are actually worth (and its not much)

Sinclair better hope the contact sports can get back to action by June/July

Well... they kinda depend on the games for their lifeblood... but that’s kind of a given.

I'll save it for speculation as I don't want to go too far into speculating in things but we'll know a lot more about the impact of the RSNs by the end of the year and clearly states like Oregon want to bankrupt the RSNs by not allowing sporting events to take place with fans in the stands

Ah so that’s what it’s all about... bankrupting the RSN’s...

If the only place to catch a game is on TV then that’s the RSN’s dream come true. They’ll make more in ad revenue due to higher viewership.
