I'll miss the old package, especially with what is replacing it.  I hoped they would build on ]what worked in the old package, but they have chosen to go a completely different route.

You can only have a package that looks like the old one for so long... 7 years later those design elements just aren’t fully workable anymore. You could always have the burned orange V1 Graphics if you really want... this new package certainly moves things forward rather than back to the dark days of late 2009.

This was posted earlier in the thread, and was hidden by myself, as there was no confirmation, at that point.

Here's the direct link to that post.

A lot of that has elements some of these stations would have used individually without group graphics... like the station logo ghosted in the background on the full screen shots. These are a huge upgrade. I think some of you guys are having trouble with how simple they are but mobile app style graphics are where the world is headed... the old package had no individuality at all. Somebody at Scripps realized that it can’t be completely one blanket design with no individual elements.

  3. Some of the elements vaguely remind me of the graphics WLS has for some reason... it’s a very nice look. The larger stations will implement it better than this undoubtedly. This is a small market station and the implementation is done accordingly.

My goodness! This must be the chief meteorologist hire of the millenium that WPMI is hyping up.

He's all over the Chicago Proud and Building a Better Chicago series stories. He hasn't filled in on the anchor desk, but he hadn't done this for several months, even as the WCIU newscast was still on the air.

Meanwhile, the new consumer reporter hasn't debuted on-air (that'll be Monday), but in a little intro video, Samantha Chatman is being listed as a member of the I-Team, with the hashtag #SamOnYourSide.

Ahhh... Project Veritas... they of editing videos together out of context and calling it legitimate journalism? James O'Keefe is a con artist political activist with an axe to grind... If you are gonna quote things... use some actual sources and not some guy with a website and a desire to see an agenda fulfilled... thanks.

I have a feeling they will continue to use this music until they switch to the new building. The music is good, just wish they could use more of their package.

I’ve always preferred the “ABC 7” branding better than the “Channel 7” but I doubt that ever change lol. I think they should rebrand themselves as ABC 7 for consistency especially since their website is called “ABC 7 NY”. I feel like saying “Channel Seven” in 2020 is like so dated. They switched back to the “Channel 7” branding in 2004. I remember we had a big discussion on that back then on this site haha.

I remembered one of the arguments was that the word “Chan-nel” was easier to say than “A-B-C”. Flows better, less syllables.

Another argument was the audience, older folks especially the baby boomers and native New Yorkers whom watch the broadcast call it “Channel 7”.

     Where in conversation they would say;

“Yo, did you see that story on Channel Seven? That was Crazy!” Lol. With that New Yawk accent haha.

Out of curiosity, I’ve always wondered, does anyone know if they include Sam Champion for the Friday talent Morning and Noon opens since Sam does not work on Fridays?

Some markets are like that... they will use Channel x or just the number when referring to a station. The ABC7 thing shouldn’t be a one size fits all if it really doesn’t fit with the market or the audiences attitudes towards the station very well.

Channel 7 emphasizes the local aspect... ABC7 emphasizes that they are abc and the 7 is secondary to that so it’s really all about who the audience is and how you want to present the station’s identity to that audience.

There's going to be a new addition to the Channel 7 morning team.

Feder stated that she'll be starting on September 30. She comes from KXAS in Fort Worth, TX.

You say you want weather and traffic in the morning... what you really mean is consumer issues you are too tired to think about or comprehend... what a goofy strategy..

That's often an invitation to an age discrimination lawsuit. Early retirement is seen as a cheaper way of easing out older talent.

I’m not a lawyer but that argument doesn’t sound like it would be easy to prove... at the same time I know of at least one guy that offered to work for $1 and was rebuffed... at a certain point you almost have to take that kind of offer... at least until you can properly ease them out.

So how about not renewing at the end of a contract?

In addition to saving on veteran talent salary and benefits, younger talent is seen as more complaint about doing the crap that owners like Tegna foists on viewers like their obsession with social media.

Has anybody simply tried offering the veteran talent less money to stay? Sure you can purge them but if you can make them cheaper instead of canning them I’d try that...

Knock it off. Those graphics are certainly a lot flatter than the shiny glass panels that all other Scripps graphics have.

That said, hasn't WXYZ had one-off topical graphics for a while now? I feel like we've been here before, wondering if some different topical graphics were a sign of things to come.

They last got some in 2014 so I think wondering a full 5 years later is fair game and they were preview graphics and not topicals used regularly in newscast when going to break. That said it’s fun to have something different to look at regardless of whether it tells the future...

That whole mess all up the left side is not flat. Neither is the ugly ticker across the bottom. And the fake light shining on the bottom left corner... that’s about as non-flat as you can get.

Perhaps you have a new definition of flat you would like to share with the rest of us? It’s a damn sight flatter than:

These have 3D elements galore... where do you see a similar element in the new version? I don’t even see a single rounded edge or deep curve or anything...

  13. Screen shots are always better:

Somebody should tell them to update the computer that runs their livestream... wouldn’t want it unsupported or anything... that message disappeared when the newscast actually came on so it was only on this placeholder screen during breaks. The new graphic is also used as a headline card on monitor shots and it can turn red for breaking news.

2011 called. It wants its graphics back. No way this is going to be the ‘new’ package.

Note that I said “direction”.. 2012 is when the current Scripps graphics were introduced and this paper flat look wasn’t even in then anyways... but it’s way in now...

When you think of Texas you only think of a few major cities that are close to the Mexican border (i.e. El Paso, San Antonio, etc.) as having the higher latino population whereas places like Dallas it wasn't really until a few years ago if not, a little bit futher back than that, we noticed an uptick in terms of population. Also this is a market where for DECADES it was dominated by WFAA and KDFW, the Spanish language stations in the area didn't really become a factor until DFW experienced the increase in Latinos moving to the area

Ok I’ll bite... what about in Oklahoma? Does the demographic shift peter out as you move north in  Texas to the point that it’s not much of a factor once you cross state lines?

  16. Here’s WXYZ’s new 11pm teaser graphics... the cities scroll at the bottom. There’s a cityscape “next on 7 action news at 11” graphic that comes before this, I’ll try to grab a shot of it. Maybe this is the direction Scripps will go later this year?

  17. The KABC ones have better animations and transitions... I think much of that is due to the small time nature of the company that made them. It's like using a small budget effects company instead of Industrial Light and Magic.. You're gonna get lesser results. I think the WABC package could be better if somebody like Renderon or one of the other major graphics companies had made it... Linear Drifts other big brag is the CBS O&O look but they just don't have much else major... WOIO maybe?

  18. 35 minutes ago, oknewsguy said:

That answers my question, I knew that the other major markets that you mentioned the latino population is growing but DFW? I might call this a HUGE win for Telemundo and it probably wouldn't surprise me if Telemundo wins more markets as the latino population groiws and major Spanish language networks like Telemundo and Univision are going to benefit from this increase

It’s Texas... why wouldn’t the Latino population be growing? I don’t quite get why DFW would be a surprise?

It's very different when it's a sporting event versus a newscast. A sporting event can still be somewhat understandable in another language. A newscast, not so much.

But putting down Spanish-language television stations who are doing just as much work for their communities in news and public service is being discriminatory to what they do simply because it's not in a language you understand.

Who said anybody didn’t do good for the community? I’m simply saying the comparison is a little shady and ham-fisted and is bent to make their results look better. You think the folks in a PR department have Walter Kronkite level honesty or something? All It demonstrates is that the demos are shifting... that’s not an accomplishment by anybody... it’s a byproduct of a change in viewer composition... then it gets played off as if they 100% worked for it against all of the other stations and that nothing changed external to their efforts...

As for being in a language I don’t understand and being discriminatory or whatever you are trying to accuse me of that has nothing to do with it. Don’t bring that kind of crap into the discussion. I’m not here for that kind of “you’re a racist” garbage. You don’t like my criticism that’s fine and we can talk about it. Don’t you dare try to win an argument by putting words in my mouth.

Yes you do because in Soccer if you watch the match in Spanish, you need context and understanding of how they use terms in Spanish and be able to translate it into English, it's just like watching TV News in Spanish so therefore it does make sense

Or none of the explanations or comparisons bandied about here has any basis in reality. You guys are treating apples and avocados as a fair comparison thus letting some idiot in Spanish language marketing pull a fast one on you... this topic repeatedly gets serious attention around here as if it’s really an oh wow truth for god knows what reason...

One audience (English only) doesn’t have a choice and another does (bi-lingual) and still another can only speak Spanish... regardless of language is a terrible statistic to bandy about and it makes the Spanish language stations look better than they are. The English language stations are at a significant disadvantage in this game. Many of the bi-lingual have English as a second language... if I started off with Spanish and learned broken English and had a choice I would go with what I knew the best and could completely comprehend... so many of these folks are joining the bandwagon out of necessity.

What good does this stat do for someone who only speaks English? I could watch Telemundo I guess... a majority are evidently... but I’d be watching people appear to me to be uncontrollably babbling... what good is a measurement of success that has a limited reach?

It’s similar to what WABC does with “most watched in America”... by households sure but in the market with the most households... not a hard feat for whoever is number one. However by share it could be a station in Fargo that could claim it or in Fairbanks... one could make a compelling argument that share is a more important number...

    Three kinds of lies...
