At least that logo bug is actually somewhat legible (compared to the WFTS one).

It really does seem to matter what’s behind that bug... this is the poster child for why clear bug graphics in a newscast were abandoned around 1995...

I'd welcome it, though I'd prefer the 'This Morning' branding, most of all.

Meanwhile, Liz Nagy filled in for both Ravi and Karen last Saturday night. There's no set regular fill-in when they're both off, as it's so infrequent, so that's no big deal, but I was surprised to see Liz anchoring with Ravi tonight. The NFL game was not in primetime on ABC, but apparently they were ready to go on at 6:30 (which got scrubbed), so maybe that was the reason. I can't think of the last time, if ever, he got a co-anchor on a weekend, in Karen's absence. Karen had a few, during her 2 pregnancies, of course.

I’ll second the “This Morning” branding rather than “In The Morning” which sounds like its going to happen tomorrow rather than now...

My, Ravi is rather outnumbered on the set tonight isn’t he?

Hold up. The Now is still a thing? I thought it was killed.

On several stations it was renamed, for example we now have 7 Action News at 4... the lame nationalized cut-Ins are exactly the same, they just don’t use the graphics from The NOW and don’t call it that... In fact they don’t use graphics during the National segments or name the show at all but they use the V2 graphics for the local parts. It’s all a nice slight of hand but the ratings are no better with the name change.

An actual full local normal newscast is apparently too much to ask for I guess...

  4. WXYZ now has the new Scripps music signature for the slate. I don’t think there is any requirement to use the slate or the signature though. It seems to vary by show and producer...

It was during the Scripps slate. Has anyone in Indy heard the same signature in the Scripps slate?

WXYZ just started using the regular upbeat Inergy theme over the slate instead of the normal slate chime or just a regular L3 with copyright information instead of the slate. They are not using the Inergy signature for it, just the midsection of the theme. No sign of anything new in Detroit yet but the slate is worlds better with Inergy as the theme playing during it for what it’s worth. What’s got us thinking Indy may be next?

So, this is new. The recent morning promo look (the shades of blue and yellow, minus any GMA rings) has made it into a new rejoin, debuting on December 23rd. I believe this only airs during the 4:30 half hour (I know not at 6, but unsure about at 5), which is odd, as Samantha Chatman doesn't appear that early. Either way, this replaces the talentless rejoins that launched after Tanja was promoted in 2016. It feels like a very soft launch, so I'm not even going to post it to YouTube until it shows up later in the show.

It looks like something you’d use for a bumper promo in the middle of a set of commercials more than a rejoin... quicker and easier than a full blown rejoin I guess.

Seems like we haven’t had a station roll out the new graphics in a while. Anyone know when/who might be next? Is there a timeline for when all of the stations will have the package?

I would imagine we’ll get another in 1-2 weeks. The holidays put a kibosh on rollouts so next week work will begin again in earnest.

Working from 4:30-1 is 8 and a half hours in the building. (not to mention getting there, among other things) No one else in the Eyewitness News anchor department hosts in a stretch more than 6 1/2. The fact that Shirleen is working 4:30-1 means at some point she'll probably go from 4:30-7 unless it's stipulated in her contract.

    Bill only works 6 1/2 (5-11:32)

    David works 4 (12 to 4:58)

    Sade works 6 1/2 (5-11:32)

    Liz works 2 1/2 (4 to 6:30)

    Sandra works 7 (5 to 12)

    Joe works 7 (5 to 12)

I don't see it being fair to force people to work for 8 and a half hours.

They are usually there 1-2 hours before air in addition to what you have there... so their days are rather long as is... some of them may enjoy their jobs so much that they don’t mind working a lot. The old saying about finding a job you love and it not really feeling like work....

No idea, but it can't just be a coincidence.

No it can’t, if they are all doing it that suggests it’s hubbed. Now that I think about it I seem to recall their Fresno station having some hub operations though I can’t remember what for...

I love Kristin's style of reporting. She's super engaging and very compelling the way she tells her stories. So glad she's back!

Here's a demo reel from the mid 2010s in honor of her.

    Not bad...

ABC must be having some kind of master control issue, because this has been happening sometimes on WLS, lately. That's the logo that flashes during the final few seconds of network promos, but it appears that someone or something is failing to turn it off, so it just keeps blinking.

Are the master controls hubbed these days?

From the looks of it it just seems to be a chroma key. I imagine she’s standing in the newsroom weather center. If they wanted to make it slightly more realistic they could back up a bit and put some green on the floor.

It’s a pretty good effect, as for the Amtrak thing I had a similar thought about the logo on a subway car.. neat Easter egg though would they have to pay a royalty to use the logo?

Bingo.  I haven't yet seen the WXYZ weather promo being discussed, but that whole gfx package is a mess.

This is the shortened version... a couple bubbles appear and you get the idea... my normal equipment is out of service at the moment so this will have to do.

Not a fan of the bubble. Seriously, in addition to these blue-white minimalist tones, it seems like they are mocking up a "Facebook" graphics theme. All they need are the hearts, thumbs ups and emojis to pop up on the screen.

Saw a new weather promo on WXYZ last night... the quotes about “what will the roads be like in the morning?” Etc are using these new bubbles... it looks ridiculous... still no new graphics but that certainly goes with the new theme...

It appears that the temporary video wall has been reinstalled on the main ABC News set, positioned closer to the desk, in front of the usual installation. Last time, it was to switch out the monitor array with a seamless curved display. No idea what's up this time, though they've been making some updates to lighting and walls over the last several weeks.

There’s something to be said for a newsroom right behind the anchor instead... I missed a call from the 90’s and they may be trying to get me back though...

There's no reason to keep the same graphics. WABC used it for years until 2016. I'm not suggesting we should keep the same package going for 20 years, but a refresh is always good. Just for perspective:

    1968-1975

    1975-1978

    1979-1983

    1983-1986

    1987-1994

1995-1998 [in my opinion, the worst]

    1999-2003

    2004-2008

    2009-2015

    2016-present

These are the ages of the graphic packages. Right now we're probably on pace to replace them in 2020-2021, but I'd not expect much until the move I'm guessing.

The problem is the minimalist nature of the KABC graphics also lead to limitations like this.

WABC's is 2 lines and while it may be bulkier, it guarantees lines like this fit.

That KABC lower third doesn’t need the arrest and victims condition to both be on it. That’s a station issue not really a graphic issue. Somebody doesn’t know how to work within space limitations.

  16. From the nice touch department... WXYZ has started using the traditional “Good evening I’m”... across all of its newscasts when there isn’t breaking news leading off... its been almost 10 years since they used this style of open consistently. They’ve started doubling down on hard news so this may be connected to that.

Yeah KXXV's bolder font choice (along with the faded logo in the background) does make a significant difference.  I still think this graphics pkg is awful, but at least it's an improvement...I'll give it that.

Kudos to KXXV for making better choices with the font and background.  Probably did the best they could.

As for the fading in the background... they’ve all had that effect for this package... it’s definitely a YMMV situation... the 25 logo looks better than the lousy WFTS logo faded in the background. A circle 5 or 7 will look pretty good faded in the background.

I would add that some logo redesigns or new versions are forthcoming for everybody given the new bugs at the very least. For example I already know WXYZ is ditching the fat silver circle 7 logo they’ve been using since they got the Renderon package during the newscasts if not entirely in favor of a more traditional thin logo. I wouldn’t necessarily think anybody will debut some other new logo that isn’t just a reimagining of what they have already.

Any way a station can cut a $50K - $85K in contract fees, they will. This is what has happened a several stations. They are dropping our VOs. TEGNA has pushed it and so has Scripps, here, it seems. For example, KUSA no longer has an imaging voice.

So what are they doing for promos and station imaging?

I notice a small difference between the cuts used on WFTS and WTXL.  Although, that four-note signature seems to be uniform across the cuts I've heard (with the exception of the breaking news cut).  But the thing that is starting to drive me crazy with WFTS' music cuts is that "clamoring" percussion that is heard as the opening starts, before the 4-note signature--as can be heard in this open:

I’m gonna take the opposite side of that... the part before the signature sounds like news music... the signature sounds like it belongs on a lifestyle magazine show... I actually am appreciating the fast paced cut of Inergy more and more... I’m very underwhelmed with the music... that particular cut will absolutely not work in Detroit... it’s like a square peg in a round hole for the style of newscast they do here...
