  1. WXYZ’s weekend co-anchor Breanne Palmerini is leaving to take a main anchor role in a smaller market. Sports reporter Kacie Hollins is looking elsewhere. This will leave WXYZ with only 4 real anchors for the whole station.

But hey... Scripps isn’t in serious trouble... no sir...

  2. The reception on my digital tuner has been flawless since the change, when it could be a little touchy before, so the new antenna is doing its job.

By the way, would April 28th be the first Saturday of sweeps? I only ask, because things are up, and gotta be coming soon. Most pieces only feature the updated logo, and paired with the same Helvetica set, I have a feeling the new look will be a significant, though not necessarily completely new package, In addition to the new weather promos, these all have rolled out in the last few week, with this first one debuting just yesterday (note, the angled lines in the background match the current full screens, just flatter)...

Maybe those long awaited talent opens will appear?

  3. WEWS is now down to just one person in the sports department as Marisa Silvas announced on her Twitter she was leaving the station for a new opportunity yet to be announced. Lauren Brill is the only person at the station still on sports.

    Scripps quality lives on...

  4. The weather team has debuted a podcast. The first episode went up more than a week ago, and they're not yet promoting it, so I'd say it's still in soft-launch mode. The thumbnail/icon likely gives another tease at the new graphics I've been speculating about for more than a year. I listened to the first episode, and while it's not the most technical discussion (which is probably a good thing), the meteorologists are able to dive into stuff that doesn't fit into the 1-3 minute windows they have on the newscasts.

"Our expert ABC7 meteorologists walk you through weather phenomena, the ins and outs of the weather industry, and give you a detailed look at how weather affects the world around us."

If they stick with those then I can live with them... they aren’t bad at all...

  5. Well congrats to them. El Paso is one of those "nothing happening" kind of media markets, considering that they are DMA #93.

I think KTSM should be second now since KDBC/KFOX are probably in the dust.

So DMA rank determines whether anything is happening? One could argue that smaller markets with less revenue are more unstable... there is far more happening than you think. Don’t place much stock in DMA ranks... it’s not ranked by anything but population...

  6. Scripps and by extension management at WXYZ is a slimy group of people... they kept this guy on their air despite knowing about his sexually harassing coworkers in grotesque ways... their HR even reportedly asked “how do you know it’s his?” in response to his sexting female colleagues pictures of his genitals... eeek this is a pretty good article about how not to handle sexual harassment allegations these days...

  7. So you're probably hearing this a lot... "I'm (blank), filling in for (blank)."

For the first time in 10+ years we are getting the story intro then “Good evening I’m blank in for blank and I’m blank...” refreshingly old school and beats the hell out of “first at 11” as an opening line...

  8. WXYZ is having quite a rough anchor situation:

Morning Anchor Malcom Maddox has been fired for sexual harassment. No replacement named. Morning Meteorologist Keenan Smith has been filling in.

Lead anchor Stephen Clark retired to go to Nashville to do country music and suddenly is going to 104.3 WOMC the number one radio station in Detroit to host their morning show. No replacement named.

Noon and 4pm anchor JoAnne Purtan was laid off in the Scripps cuts after 20 years there.

And 6/7/11pm anchor Carolyn Clifford is out for surgery.

So no morning co-anchor, no noon anchor and no regular 6/7/11pm anchors at the circle 7 right now...

  9. Let's go back on topic, please? Thank you!

WAVY anchor/reporter Brandi Cummings is leaving the station. Her last day is Tuesday.

Meanwhile, WNCN meteorologist Kristin Ketchell ends her fill-in time at WAVY. Ashley Baylor was on maternity leave and she'll return this week.

How does a random catch all thread have a topic?

  10. The same fools who are trying to restructure iHeart and Cumulus... John Malone, for one.

Neither of those groups has much hope... both are big but both have previous financial difficulties... now you are in Greyhound territory... how many bankruptcies can we squeeze out of this thing?

  11. If anything, Scripps will go towards a restructuring bankruptcy, not a liquidation bankruptcy.

Seriously, the company is not going to be peeled apart. WXYZ or other stations will not be sold off separately. Far more likely the company will wind up like Granite... holding on just for the sake of holding on.

Umm... Granite was eventually peeled apart wasn’t it?

As far gone as these stations are and the amount it would take to make them hum again why would you restructure rather than getting the cash and walking away?

I don’t see the incentive there... it’s not unlike Sears-Kmart... what fool would try to restructure them and what would they get out of it?

  12. it went nation wide today... the article says the changes take place “starting Today”...

not sure what YOU have been watching... but they’re much bigger... and uglier... than before... not to mention more red...

Here in Detroit they used the red breaking news ones a lot... those were well... red with a little white on the edges and stuff... it’s not like the trapezoids became rhombuses or something...

  13. Who knows at this point. Something's been amiss with Scripps in general ever since the legacy company spun off the cable network division.

I’ve always thought that the cable networks allowed the TV operation to be well oiled and expensive but when they were removed Scripps had no idea how to cut and it’s simply become a mess and a downward spiral... this is what it looks like when a firm goes under though... that slow burn into oblivion....

  14. WTMJ and WGBA got it (Well, the weird 30 minute version at least). I heard KTNV was supposed to get it eventually but it doesn't look like they have (yet).

The WTMJ version at least has adopted the new graphics and virtual set

Those are hardly different than the old ones... they added some edging and that’s about it... the transition is slower but I’m not seeing much different there...
