  1. KTVT has been unable to show newscasts since a little bit after 4:30 this afternoon due to a lightning strike. They showed CBSN during the 4:30 and 5pm half-hours and reran the CBS Evening News at 6pm. Their three subchannels are down as well. KTXA is still functioning normally. As of this writing, the problem has still not been fixed.

UPDATE: As KTVT/KTXA also houses CBS News’ innovation lab, CBS News NOW couldn’t be produced tonight.

UPDATE 2: KTVT’s newscasts have returned to air starting with the 10pm tonight.

It's strange that a market with such leisure and culture as Miami/Ft Lauderdale doesn't have a lightweight morning newscast. Even the 9am hour on WPLG and WFOR are straight news. (Not counting Deco Drive or 6 in the Mix).

Looking at the quieter overlapping market West Palm, Fox 29 is straight news from 7-9. WPEC and WPBF are also strictly news at nine. Thats five hard newscasts at 9am in South Florida.

I think it may be due to the successful culture WSVN has built through the decades in Miami/Fort Lauderdale. Many of their English-language rivals in the market have taken key elements from them or in the case of WPLG, flat out copied them completely.

When I first read this, I thought, "they should really be expanding their morning newscasts into the 4:00 a.m. hour, not the 10:00 a.m. hour." It doesn't make sense for a top-50-market station to not have their morning news start before 5:00 a.m. these days. (I still think it's weird KOKH is the only English-language news operation in OKC that starts its morning news at 5:00, while the Big Three affiliates start theirs at 4:00 or 4:30 a.m.)

KTVT, KPIX and KPRC all cut their 4:30am newscasts during the pandemic.

  4. Here’s what Wendy McMahon had to say about programming these new (and possibly existing) independents in the Deadline piece:

    Quote

“We look forward to reimagining these stations as independents while leveraging the considerable value of their prime-time real estate in each of the markets,” said Wendy McMahon, President and Co-Head, CBS News and Stations. “It’s an exciting time to look at new opportunities to add local programming, including live sports, and shows from across the Paramount Global brands. We are also grateful to have been part of The CW for 17 memorable years and wish our partners at Nexstar continued success.”

Sounds like there’s a new game plan in the works for the CBS independent stations that isn’t just tired court shows.

Okay this is just me thinking out loud here...

    • KBCW > KRON
    • KMAX > NO OPTIONS
    • KSTW> KONG
    • WKBD>WADL Sub Channel
    • WPCW>WTAE OR/WPGH Sub Channels
    • WTOG>NO OPTIONS
    • WPSG>NO OPTIONS
    • WUPA>WPCH OR/WANF Sub Channels

So I only see the CW missing in 3 markets here after CBS drops them.  My Network TV is without stations in 24 Markets, they will do just fine!!!

The KMAX and WPSG situations are easy. KQCA and WPHL. Mind you, the latter is a MyNetwork affiliate owned by Nexstar.
