  1. I had no idea that WBNX had a different owner when it was launched.  I thought Winston Broadcasting owned it from day one.

I do remember reading an old article that WBNX was going to face some "must-carry" difficulty like what WOIO faced when it was launched more than six months before the double nickel went on-the-air.

Speaking of WOIO, a lot of people think that station and WBNX were what helped WCLQ ceased being an independent station (with four indies in Akron, three of those Cleveland-based, it was too much to support all of them in the market in 1985-86) and flipped to the Home Shopping Club/Network.

Uh, good suggestions, but what if angley did a "pat robertson" and in his will it states that the station stays in the hands of his church in perpetuity ( in Pat Robertson's case its that no matter who owns "THE CBN FAMILY CHANNEL"  they have to air "the 700 club" in perpetuity)

There was the time when what is now Freeform could not go for a name that didn't have "Family Channel" included, like when ABC Family tried to become "XYZ," but was blocked from doing so.

For WBNX, they now have an entire subchannel devoted to the "Ninety and Nine Club."  That means they don't have to worry about squeezing that show on the main lineup.

I can't speak to the specifics, but from a rudimentary analysis, the collective number of staff hired on a per-station basis to produce an additional newscast is greater than that required to produce syndicated programming, especially with lower production costs like The List and Right This Minute as opposed to the former Arsenio Hall Show or Jeopardy. As a group like Scripps buys more stations, the overall savings further nets out.

This is why I fully expect Nexstar to produce a NewsNation AM newscast for all of their Fox, CW and MyNetTV affils. The investment made in NewsNation is already significant and has no signs of waning (though I would argue about value for the Nexstar, Inc. brand entirely, because it's not their core competency). Therefore a syndicated morning program would A. Reduce staffing needs at many Nexstar stations. B. Drive viewers to the NewsNation cable channel. It's really a no brainer to me. A PM national for those stations a half hour earlier, could drive people to the network as well, if used to tease stories you'll only see on the Network.

Not sure if a syndicated AM show is worth having for Nexstar, because WJW's AM newscast is number one.

Back to Scripps, how are The List and RTM doing in the ratings?

  4. Rob Finnerty is now over at Newsmax, where he is also doing the morning news.

Ironically, Rob was briefly paired with Jackie Fernandez on the morning show at WTSP after she left WEWS (she wasn't at the Cleveland station long and her departure got a lot of press).

  5. Frank Wiley has left WEWS from his role as reporter and 5pm co-anchor this past Friday.  He announced he's moving to Tampa for a role on a morning newscast, though he did not say which station he's going to.

He's not the only person to leave the station as weekend morning meteorologist Bryan Shaw left several weeks ago.  He plans to stay in Cleveland.

WOIO has preempted CBS This Morning this morning and there really is no need to. Cleveland did not get the snow as expected. Once again, WOIO

is a joke. Last week they did a complete story with anchor Tiffany Tucker, her narration showed an empty studio chair for 45 seconds. This place is a

dismal television station in a market that likes CBS. Losers every time they are the air. We are going to start doing shots when they screw up. Big fun awaits.

The engineers don't care. Life in a basement.

WOIO seems to be in the ratings basement.  Outside of CBS lead-ins, they are dead last.  Overall, they are doing horribly.  WJW is tops and WEWS is doing well and much better than before.  WKYC keeps dropping as a lot of people are not responding to its current approach.

  7. My question is how will this impact WDLI and WVPX in the Cleveland/Akron/Canton market?  WDLI carried the soon-to-be shut down ION Plus, while WVPX will likely still air ION TV.

If ION reduces its hours and with ION Plus going away, what could happen to those two stations?  I know they will get separate owners since Scripps is not keeping either of the two.  Could WEWS still operate and program them through a JSA (like the situation between WOIO and WUAB from 1994 until 2000)?

I can also picture TEGNA or Nexstar making a play for WDLI or WVPX to team up with either WKYC or WJW and form a duoply.

Plus, there's Bounce on WUAB 43.2 and Court TV Mystery on WQHS 61.4.  Are those channels still under contract with those two stations?  I have a feeling they might up on WVPX, WEWS, and/or WDLI somehow.

  8. CBS could buy any of the other stations in Cleveland.  Nexstar wouldn't give up WJW and neither would Scripps with WEWS.  Maybe Tegna might surrender WKYC.  Then there's WBNX.  Not to mention WVPX and WDLI.

The last thing WOIO needs though is another affiliate switch.  It was a rough go the first time in 1994.  Not sure they would want to repeat it again.

Re: WGCL... I am curious from insiders, has the new news director made anything better? Have folks warmed to him? Any other big talent or mgt changes in the works? Whos the new assistant ND?

Seems to me all he has done since he has been there, is pushed out a ton of people (including a few really good ones).. and renamed the morning show, which looks the same and still sucks.

Is his plan to simply make the station WCNC south? Cause that station sucks too.

Unfortunately, WGCL has kept that one female meteorologist who has made the news for all the wrong reasons, including posting a video agreeing with terminations and saying that the revamped morning show was centered around her.

The three main anchors are second tier. The male is a lightweight, and the main female cant speak without marbles in her mouth.

They need two top notch major market elegant leads, and some veteran investigative reporters.

The look is solid now. Now they need to people.

WOIO/WUAB tried adding at least one veteran investigative reporter after Carl Monday left, but it didn't work out too well.  First came Alan Cohn from Sarasota, then he quit to try running for office in Florida, yet didn't make a good impression in the newsroom.  Then Ronnie Dahl from Detroit was brought in, but was shown the door after only two months.  The two stations have not brought in anyone on the same level as those two as of right now.

  11. At least things are looking up for WUAB.  You have to give the station effort putting more into its programming from the CW affiliation to the new monster movie show.  Even the syndicated daytime lineup today is better than several years ago on 43.  I will add that Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune has added some stability for WOIO after the 7-8pm slot saw a revolving door of shows come and go for ten years between 2002 and '12.

What both stations need are stronger anchor teams for its newscasts with a stronger set of reporters to boot, and not the ones that will leave in dramatic fashion that will end up in both Newsblues and FTVLive.  The Action era set the bar very high, it will be hard to match that, but I think with a better ND, it could happen.

Back to WOIO’s woes. From relegating Jeff Tanchak to mornings, to firing or forcing out almost every anchor and reporter worth a damn, WOIO is definitely a shell of its former self, all because Raycom wanted to “borg” WOIO into one of its stations, which itself isn’t bad. The problem is that the product was so dumbed down that WOIO now feels bush-league compared to the others. The set is nice and the graphics are nice, but WOIO doesn’t have the “faces” to be competitive, with Chris Tanaka needing a Red Bull and Tiffani Tucker STILL trying to be “Great Value Romona Robinson”.

Tanchak was originally supposed to be axed from WOIO/WUAB when Dominic Mancuso and Fred D'Ambrosi were running the stations and starting the "Cleveland 19" franchise.  Then it was decided for Tanchak to stay, but to no longer be the Chief Meteorologist.  The stations hired Jason Nicholas from WEWS with Tanchak tag-teaming him.  Then, it was when the switch with Samantha Roberts came.

A lot of the anchors and reporters started leaving even before "19 Action News" became "Cleveland 19 News" when Ed Gallek went to WJW and Dawn Kendrick went to WKYC.

Romona Robinson was the first step in removing any “Action” from “19 Action News.”  They dropped Reed, Lynna Lai, Danielle Serino and many others once Romona arrived.  Imagine that team with the current look and energy - IMO it would rival Fox 8 for the best newscast in town, especially since WKYC is a mess and WEWS is a shell of its former self.  (And yes, it’s ironic many of those folks ended up at Channel 3, but neither Lai or Serino are being utilized to their potential.  Choosing Betsy Kling to anchor over Lynna Lai wasn’t a great idea. But I digress...)

Lynna and Danielle both deserve better over and WKYC.  A lot of good reporters who got passed over while a lot of hires were made for anchor positions that were created made absolutely no sense.

  12. WOIO/WUAB has been a mess for quite some time now.  The revolving door is the worst, especially with on-air talent.  Any of the attempts to replace some of the longtime personnel has not worked out too well, and some new hires have come and gone.  One reporter from Detroit was let go after only two months.  Another from Florida left after nine months.  The weather and sports teams have been a lot more stable than the news anchor and reporting teams.

What is funny is that the management behind the "Cleveland 19" fiasco wanted Jeff Tanchak gone, but gave up on that idea when got out on that plan and his fans got upset.  Yet, that didn't stop others like David Wittman, Denise Dufala, Catherine Bosley, Beth McLeod and many more from leaving after that (botched) makeover was launched, which ended up not working (along with the Romona Robinson-Mark Nolan reunion).  Plus, some of the hires during that period didn't pan out and that management ended up getting the boot.

Now, the stations are trying to go back to the "Action News" glory days with actually using that name, but only portions of it and some of the talent from that period.

  13. Has WOIO hired a new investigative reporter?  I know their last two attempts after Carl Monday's departure (the guy from Florida, the woman from Michigan) didn't pan out too well.

Speaking of 19, they brought back Ronnie Duncan, who used to do sports from 1995 to 2001, but as a news reporter.

And now, Andrew Kinsey is leaving to replace Jerry Revish at WBNS.

Lots of volatility at the WTOL anchor desk this year.  To be expected since WTOL is firmly in second place and Toledo is shrinking from a DMA perspective.  Maybe they’ll pick up Jeff Smith from WTVG?  Doubtful...since he would likely cost $$.

I thought WBNS would go after Mark Taylor after he left WCMH to replace Revish.  Wouldn't a more familiar face be a better option to join the evening desk as opposed to someone from another market?
