In the Central and Mountain time zones, the 10 PM newscast is traditionally the flagship newscast.  As quite a few Fox affiliates (including my own, and I'm in the Eastern time zone) have found out, people like to catch the 10 PM news before turning in; in cities like Chicago and Dallas, quite a few people are still at work or trying to get home.  So for KTVT and WDJT to replace news with Jeopardy! at 6 doesn't represent that great a loss in either Dallas or Milwaukee.  And WVUE and WALA are Fox affiliates; for them the flagship newscast is at 9 PM so it's no great loss to have one less newscast in New Orleans and Mobile at 6.

Plus KDVR (which last I checked beat KCNC and KMGH) opts to air Jeopardy! and Wheel at 6pm Mountain rather than air a newscast.

    It is.

    Yep, it’s starting September 6th.

Funny how WUSA had the 4pm news in DC for a few years in the 90s and now they’ve playing catch-up with the other major stations.

  3. Big Bang Theory reruns are moving from WDCA to WDCW starting September 4th.

WDCA will fill the missing hour with Extra and the Simpsons (currently Extra airs at 9:30 AM and noon) while WDCW will air only one rerun of black-ish and The Neighborhood daily instead of two.

I would agree in most areas of the country a 4am or 4:30a newscast isn’t worth the resources used to produce the content.

In top 5 Markets; NYC, LA, Chicago, Philly it’s ok as many people start work at 5am or 6am.

A market like Washington DC definitely has an audience for a 4am newscast as it’s one of those places with commuters traveling long long distances to get into the city. As a result people wake up extremely early.

    Same with the SF/Bay Area.

For DC, yeah, Northern Virginia is very sprawling and people will travel that far for work (even if remote work is very prominent in the area). NBC and Fox both start at 4AM.

And it's for reasons like this why all 5 LA newsrooms start at 4AM.
