PIX Morning News vs. Good Day New York

We know that PIX 11 was never very professional in the morning but FOX5 is possibly becoming worse... Believe it or Not! Here's why: Last week when Rosanna Scotto was out they had Lisa Oz fill in one day and then the next day one of the Jersey House wives... Today Greg Kelly was filling a water ballon at the desk and water went every where including all over Rosanna Scotto.. I'm not saying that the news needs to be serious all the time and I like when they talk and make light of the news sometimes.. But is there a line of what's professional and what isn't? Any Opinions?

I feel that there needs to be stuff like this on TV because people are starting to get tired of the seriousness all the time, plus if they want seriousness they can always tune to 2, 4, and 7. Those broadcasts are more serious than the ones on 5 and 11. Overall these two broadcasts give viewers options and appeal to a more younger demographic, rather than the ones seen on 2, 4, and 7. Sure there is a line between what is professional and what isn't, I'd say that the line is there, timing is the fine line, because during times of breaking news and serious stuff happens, then thats where the line is made evident however on slow news days, like the ones we've been having as of late the line isn't as visible..

Overall, I think the mission of 5 and 11 is to make the newscasts fun and entertaining by adding these elements to the show, thus giving viewers another option.

There's room for both serious news and fun in the AM. The biggest issue/problem is finding the right group of people that can pull both of these things off. I caught the water balloon incident on 'The Soup' and thought it came across as embarrassing. If Kelly and Scotto had some level of chemistry, they may have been able to laugh the whole thing off. That didn't happen. Neither seems to enjoy what they do and/or each other's company.

Young people are not as easily-amused as TV news people seem to think. We won't watch anything and everything nor do we need things to be 'dumb downed' in order to appeal to us. We, like many other age groups, often relate more to those who are similar in age to us and/or those that share the same likes/dislikes, etc... as we do.

Honestly, you can have a successful show if you're able to strike a balance between the serious and light-hearted stuff. It just seems that this is easier said than done these days.

The best balance of fun and seriousness that I know of has to be "Chicago's Very Own" WGN Morning News. For nearly 15 years, they've been irrevent, inappropriate, and a strong #1 competitor. They pride themselves on their ability to provide a professional news report, all while being entertaining.

There are, in my opinion, 3 reasons why they are such a good example to follow:

  •
  • Consistency: like all stations, they try new things, but never stray away from the segments/bits that keep viewers coming back.
  • Familiarity: anchors Larry Potash, Robin Baumgarten, and weatherman Paul Konrad have been with the program since the late 90s, and almost the rest of the line-up have at least 5 years on the show. A lack of anchor changes keeps the viewers comfortable with who their watching.
  • Straight-Forward: unlike most stations, they tell you how the show is going to be, instead of constantly teasing stories. For the last few years, they have aired a promo warning viewers that from 4:30-7, they'll get straight-up, no frills reporting. However, from 7-9, the emphasis goes to fun, with less of a focus on news.

Frankly, I don't know how they do it...but they pull the broadcast off without a hitch. I recommend watching a little of the show sometime, they air it online everyday (wgntv.com). They also have a strong presence on youtube. Many stations should really pay attention, especially WPIX-since they are a fellow Tribune station.

Just the other day, they tore it up with Tom Hanks, one of the funniest interviews I've seen on the show. http://www.wgntv.com/news/morningnews/wgntv-tom-hanks-on-wgn-morning-news,0,117808.story

Greg had different co-hosts for the 9am hour of GDNY because they rarely report news during the hour, Tai Hernandez filled in during 7-9 edition.
