Jess 1115 Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 So about a year after he went on sabbatical, I'm starting to hear some Scott Chapin stuff on WTXF. Not just special promos, but the typical stuff you'd expect a station voiceover to do. Like the "Tomorrow at 11, watch Fox 29" endpages and some really nice IDs for Fox network programming. I'm hearing he's being phased back in and is probably replacing Greg O'Neill, though a lot of Greg's voiceovers are still all over the station. I'm wondering what made him get out of his (semi?) retirement but I think the reduced workload at WTXF suits him. They don't run opens anymore (actually, they stopped using music during bumpers). For the record, I think he sounds great. Maybe it's because it's been a while since he's been in the market but I wasn't expecting the warmth he's bringing to what I've seen so far. If he's back, then welcome back.
stevieboy247 43 Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 I'm a little surprised because I thought he was done for good.
ABC 7 Denver 1741 Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 Not a big fan myself. He was VO for KDVR (now Beau Weaver) and his voices strikes me as very nasally.
AdamTheJ 90 Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 Thank Goodness. He should replace the guy who recently recplaced John Young on WFLX in West Palm Beach. Whoever that is, sounds horrible. JMO.
WFTV Channel 9 80 Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 He's also doing voiceover for WTSP. I saw a promo last night during the 11pm news and he was doing the voiceover.
jdcnow 14 Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 It's about time. I missed Scott's voice on KDFW. And, I'm willing to bet WSVN hasn't been the same without him.
bhratbrat 437 Posted June 12, 2012 Posted June 12, 2012 It hasn't even though Paul Turner is a great replacement.
AaronQ 288 Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Scott Chapin is still the VO for WSOC-TV in Charlotte for the openings
Samantha 2906 Posted June 15, 2012 Posted June 15, 2012 John Young used to be decent. Now his voice is quite degraded. Scott's had that happen just a bit.
Jess 1115 Posted June 15, 2012 Author Posted June 15, 2012 John Young used to be decent. Now his voice is quite degraded. Scott's had that happen just a bit. I think, if anything, Scott is sounding better in the work I've seen him do here. Maybe it's just coming from Greg O'Neill who has no range at all, but I don't think he sounded THIS good when he left Fox 29 in 07ish. Chapin's one of the few voiceover guys that has shown real evolution over time. Compare his work from 1993 just to his stuff from 2000 and there's significant differences (or more accurately improvements - he sounded like Announcertron Prime early on). As for John Young, yeah, his best days have passed but I'd chalk that up to age rather than voice degradation. Voice degradation is what I'd use to describe the sad decline of Jeff Kaye's voice. (I still can't believe they tried to give him one more shot)

(I still can't believe they tried to give him one more shot) Sad decline? I don't think so. I live in the West Palm Beach DMA, and I think Kaye's voice sounds wonderful on WPTV News Channel 5. In fact, Kaye's would make a great replacement for Ed O'Brien on KTRK in Houston.

AdamTheJ 90 Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 Um, Hulkie was talking about Jeff Kaye, the former voice of WPVI's Action News. You're talking about David Kaye. Thank you, that's what I meant, but getting back to the main topic, Scott Chapin, WFLX in West Palm Beach could sure use him to replace the inferior voice it has right now.
ABC 7 Denver 1741 Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 ...WFLX in West Palm Beach could sure use him to replace the inferior voice it has right now. Do you mean John Young? He isn't bad. I do think Chapin is worse.
Samantha 2906 Posted June 21, 2012 Posted June 21, 2012 John Young used to be decent. Compare the WFLX Image News samples to, say, any of the 90s KAKE themes.
qunewsguy 380 Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 John Young's voice changed a couple years back. Not quite sure what happened to him, but it's not quite the same. Chapin's still as sharp as he ever was.
AdamTheJ 90 Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Actually, John Young isn't WFLX's voice over. He got replaced by someone else in the Fall of 2011. Young's current replacement, IMO, is bad. That's why Chpain needs to be WFLX's vo asap.

AdamTheJ 90 Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 Well, I think this clip makes it official that Scott Chapin IS the new voice of WTSP: Thus making WTSP the New WSVN of Tampa Bay. Hmmm, I wonder how often 10 News will be interrupting Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! Speaking of Scott's return, I'm somewhat requesting WBZ pick up his voice, but I have a feeling that WHDH will like use him again once the contract for Paul Turner expires.

Has WTSP taken a more hard news approach as of late? I still remember them being the fluff news station of Tampa Bay in the earlier part of last decade. And I like the voiceover for WBZ. I can't recall his name but he's also the same one that's been doing the voiceovers for KMOV and he's been doing a great job since they dropped Richard Malmos.

jestbiteme 13 Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Has WTSP taken a more hard news approach as of late? I still remember them being the fluff news station of Tampa Bay in the earlier part of last decade. They pretty much dropped the fluffy stuff when they switched to the G3 graphics, branded as 10Connects, and dropped some of their best talent. (Anna Allen, Randy Rauch, Marty Matthews.) I think they relied on Dick Fletcher's history to carry them and when he passed, they didn't know what to do. They tried to out-innovate the competition with "10Connects," failed (AIM is SO 1998!) and when Pete Roghaar took over for Darren Richards, they went hard news.

It always irritates me that Gannett only bothered to have their centralized graphics hub produce fairly cool intros for WTSP and KUSA (WTSP's morning show intro is excellent IMO), while all the other stations simply had their basic station logo slapped onto an unimaginative open. The open they made for WKYC was so bad and bland-o, it eventually was scrapped for a dry open after Russ Mitchell joined. That being said, Scott has made a triumphant return. Only thing that weighs it down is the God-awful Rampage theme.
