Sinclair...Again

hmmmmmm...to the first question they are really really weak stations and as far as I remember right, WSYT-TV used to run newscasts until it was cancelled in april of 2006 and second of all I'll speculate that Raycom Media steps in, but otherwise I have to agree with you about another loophole: cancel the licences of both WSYT and WNYS-TV and move both the FOX and MYNET affiliations to .2 subchannel. WIBW-TV does this with their 13.2 subchannel, however that is an different story and situation.

would that be Richard Malmos or an different announcer? I have heard of Richard Malmos through the NMSA.

Definitely not Richard Malmos....It sounds like Beau Weaver...but a little softer of a read.

Richard is on WEAR in Pensacola.

ah, does make sense, I realize before WEAR had Richard, They had Drew Dimmel and he is from Kansas City.

Drew Dimmel used to do the voice over for WEAR, KOKH, WCHS, and WGME and also does annoucements for Kansas City International Airport.

Dimmel has Parkinson's and retired from VO work (he's become very active in Parkinson's advocacy). He's one of several major undercredited voiceovers in the NMSA; he did tons of work for KMBC (and even worked for them as the weekend weatherman), plus KVII in the 90s and some others. But his biggest body of TV work was with Sinclair stations.

Dimmel is one of two voiceover talents to call Overland Park, KS home; the other is Ron Moore, who did WDAF in the late 80s and early 90s.

That explains why Sinclair phased out his voice as they upgraded graphics (and went to HD)...this was probably his wish to phase himself out as Sinclair upgraded their stations. Richard Malmos was the replacement VO artist and already had several Sinclair stations under his belt (he did WSYX/WTTE's voice dating back to their launch as News Center back in 1999-2000.)

These days, with all of the new stations, they seem to be going for different talent....even Richard Malmos now voices WKYC, a Gannett station!

I'm noticing some minor tweaks on WPMI as of late....

They have started to use a new voiceover on promos and their news opens.

The news opens & talent intro are slightly different with different cuts of the NBC collection that have been used in the past (under their old SD look).

I also noticed that they are no longer referring to themselves as "The Weather Authority" and took out the "WeatherRate Most Accurate Forecast" reference during the newscast. (But they are still running promos with both)

They still have their current graphics package and theme, so it looks like that's not going away any time soon....the old promos are probably in the process of either being updated or weeded out for newer stuff....

Probably just some cosmetic tweaks now that Sinclair is calling the shots...the only noticeable change in news coverage is a lot of "Reality Check" stuff (otherwise known as "Waste Watch" in other Sinclair markets)

I was just watching their live stream at 10. They still used "The Weather Authority" branding. But I tuned in with about ten minutes left so I didn't get to hear their new VO. I'll have to tune in again Sunday and find out...

WOAI still uses the "WeatherRate Most Accurate Forecast" reference but changed their weather branding from "StormTracker 4" to "4 Zone Weather" about a month after Sinclair took over. If you're not aware what the 4-Zone concept is, watch a forecast on their site. It's a really stupid concept, where they basically break up the viewing area into four sections called "zones", and have a custom forecast based on each "zone". This was the brainchild of Chief Met John Gerard and well predates Sinclair ownership (they've done it since about 2010).

Additionally, the branding changed from "News 4 WOAI" to "News 4 San Antonio" as WOAI phases out their call letters for whatever reason.

Chris Corley continues to do the voiceovers for now but I imagine they will switch to someone cheaper in the near future. Sinclair tends to have three stock vo's they use: Richard Malmos, Craig Roberts, and an unknown male VO (if you go to NMSA and listen to WYZZ Daily News Sample 2, that is who I'm talking about). Here, KABB/KMYS use all three. KABB uses Malmos strictly for news-related items, the unknown male VO for their non news items (who tries to mimic an AWFUL Texas accent), and Roberts for KMYS. I know Eric Gordon is another one they seem to be phasing in too (KEYE dropped Corley in early 2012, used Gordon until about May 2013, then switched to Malmos). Corley has occasionally done a couple KABB promos since the buyout so that's been kind of weird but for the most part he sticks to WOAI. It's probably anyone's guess who's doing WPMI (and whether WJTC or WFGX switched VO's, I don't even know who they're using...).

Also, I have noticed a significant increase in "Waste Watch" reports (known as "You Paid for It" on WOAI). Generally the topics are different than KABB's but the same concept. I imagine WEAR/WPMI is the same with their "Waste Watch/Reality Check" series...

I miss Ron Moore's voice. He did VOs for

in the late 80s, early 90s. Since WLS's dropping of Ron Rolland in 2009, Richard Malmos is now the longest used syndicated voice-over talent in Chicago, being on
since the 12/31/94 launch of general market independent, after losing Univision to WGBO (almost two decades under his belt), and a sub-announcer of Me-TV.

My apologizes for going way off topic but I did wanted to throw that Chicago connection there. Y'all can continue with the topic at hand.

wow! that long! I actually have a tape lingering around my house of Drew Dimmel doing a voiceover for KMBC 9 News (KMBC-TV) from 1988.

Craig Roberts is heard mostly on WKRG here (since he's under contract there) as a secondary voice along with Carol Baxter...they mainly voice commercials but do some promo-related voiceovers. Media General uses them in some of their markets as well...

Outside of Mobile-Pensacola, and other markets where Sinclair has Craig (and possibly Carol as well) under contract, I've heard Craig mainly do non-news voiceovers like entertainment promos and serve as the voice of some of their CW & MyNetwork Stations (including WLFL). Another thing I've noticed since Leif Anders (the voice of WPMI being gradually phased out...per the SouthernMedia News Music Archive) is that the voice that does most of UTV44's stuff is now doing the entertainment promos at WPMI...mainly the Judge Judy & ET Topicals. Sinclair must require its stations to have a separate news voice along with dedicated promo voices.

I've never heard of Carol Baxter before. KABB doesn't use anybody female but I found out that the name of the "unknown male voiceover" referenced earlier: Gary Price (who is actually contracted to do the VO's for 17 of Sinclair's Fox affiliates. He's pretty bad if you ask me...

Craig occasionally does some KABB stuff but they tend to stick to Gary Price for non-news stuff and Richard Malmos for news, with any promos coming from WOAI that air on KABB using Chris Corley. So, in a way, KABB uses four vo's. All of KMYS' stuff is done by Craig Roberts. You might be right about Sinclair requiring their stations to have two separate voiceovers (which is kind of ridiculous but OK I guess...). But WOAI, for now, uses Corley for everything. They do have a second female VO they occasionally use, Lisa Malay, who does most of the Gannett stations and a couple of the Hearst stations. Maybe they'll use her for their non-news stuff?

Also, a little off topic, but I was wondering, does WKRG still run these promos? I know they have some more polished ones here, but I guess it's worth finding out if they air the other ones. I also heard Carol Baxter and some other man VO in there but from what I've

, Mel Showers the main anchor, does their news open VO which sounds weird...

Thankfully, WKRG retired the promos that looked like they were fresh out of iMovie (the ones from the AwesomePromotion Youtube Channel). The newer ones are worlds better. They must have had some major blowup in their promotions department because they used to really put out some nice promos until the aforementioned ones hit the air about 2 years ago.

Mel Showers did the news opens and announcing work in the interim period after Chris Clausen passed away, and until Jay Gardner (who also voices WRBL & WNCT) took over duties. When WKRG went HD, they retired the Mel Showers news opens and finally put Jay Gardner in them. They even used Jay in a few commercials (which is a definite NO NO at most stations these days).

After perusing the wonderful, informative, overly-specific and somewhat preachy "TV in Mobile" blog on Examiner...I saw that Queen Latifah's new show will be airing on WFGX my35 this fall.

I had WPMI on and noticed that they are ALSO airing Queen Latifah's new show as well.

In the past, WPMI and WJTC have had common programming, especially with WJTC airing encores of Dr. Oz and Judge Judy during the daytime. WEAR and WFGX have done the same with their syndicated shows as well.

With the fall season coming up, and this being the first one with 4 stations under common ownership, I wonder what other changes could happen. WFGX has only been full-market for a little over three years, and has pretty much replaced their daytime coverage on ThisTV with other syndicated shows. (I'm hoping someone puts it on a subchannel, either WFGX or WJTC). Maybe Ring of Honor will finally make an appearance on WPMI or WJTC?

It was mentioned in the WJZY/WCCB thread about Simpsons rights being stuck with the station that had them until the network version goes off the air....WJTC has been airing them until about a year ago. Could WFGX or another Sinclair station in-market pick up the show (since they're technically under common ownership now?)

WBTV is picking up Queen Latifah to replace Rachael Ray which is going to WJZY. Unless WBTV were to move Let's Make a Deal or America Now to 10, Queen will be at 10.

I realize that has nothing to do with Sinclair but just thought I'd mention it since Queen was brought up.

Leif doesn't do anything on PMI that I've heard lately... It's a younger (sounding) guy. NMSA is wrong, all but the first open he has posted is from Leif. The rest are from the other guy.

I'm sorry, but I need to vent for a second. That blog is, just, wow, that has got to be some of the worst writing I have ever read. And I thought that the staff reporters who write for the Express News were bad. I hate to say this, but I have read better writing in a high school newspaper (no joke) than what this guy is posting on the, wait for it, World Wide Web. I mean just look at this:

WPMI-TV broadcasts report from another TV station without proper citation

During the sports segment of the local newscast WPMI-TV produced at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 14th, the sports reporter Clement Townsend did not refer to WVTM-TV in Birmingham, Alabama by their call letters while presenting a report about hand gestures used by Nick Saban, the head coach for the football team at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He referred to the station as "the NBC affiliate in Birmingham" instead (both WPMI-TV and WVTM-TV are network TV affiliates for the National Broadcasting Company, or NBC for short).

Inaccurate and outdated data about local broadcasters in new telephone book

The 2013-2014 edition of the Real Yellow Pages for Mobile County has inaccurate and outdated information about local radio stations and local television stations such as former call letters (WABB-AM, WABB-FM, WUNI-AM, WBPG-TV, WKSJ-AM, WYOK-FM), a former frequency (98.3 for WDLT-FM), former brand names ("Oldies 106", which was used by WAVH-FM, "NBC 15", which was used by WPMI-TV, and "Star 104", which was used by WYOK-FM), former addresses (4000 Dauphin Street in Mobile for WHIL-FM, 1 Office Park for WBLX-FM, WDLT-FM, and WGOK-AM, and 200 Addsco Road for WMOB-AM), and a telephone number no longer in service (for WPAS-FM).

WPMI-TV broadcasts live report by employee of WEAR-TV

On Thursday, June 6th, Amber Southard of WEAR-TV did a live report for WPMI-TV from the beach of the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Florida, as part of their local 6:00 p.m. newscast. Even though WPMI-TV and WEAR-TV had separate news departments with employees who usually reported for their respective stations, Amber Southard was allowed to broadcast for WPMI-TV on this occasion since both stations were members of the same company: Sinclair Broadcast Group. Even though the stations were members of the same company, there was no mention of WEAR-TV during Amber Southard's report or her introduction by one of the news presenters for the newscast (Kym Thurman of WPMI-TV introduced her as if she belonged to the station by saying, "Local 15's Amber Southard"). The only indication of Amber Southard's connection to WEAR-TV during the newscast was the logo for the station on her shirt.

Guest of WKRG-TV makes reference to station's competitors during local newscast

During the "Mark Your Calendar" segment of the local newscast WKRG-TV produced on Thursday, May 30th, between 8:25 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. (during a break for "CBS This Morning", a national news program), one of the guests for the segment (Alvin Jones) referred to WALA-TV by their brand name "FOX 10" while speaking to Jonathan Owens, the host for the segment, about one of the station's news presenters (Lenise Ligon) expected to judge a local cooking competition scheduled for Saturday, June 1st, called the Real Men Cook Off. Jonathan Owens did not comment on the reference during the segment.

Former news reporter and news presenter for WKRG-TV appears in infomercial

On Monday, June 3rd, WKRG-TV broadcast a local advertising segment (or infomercial) called "Marketplace 5" immediately after the end of their local 12:00 p.m. newscast from 12:25 p.m. until 12:28 p.m. (WKRG-TV had occasionally broadcast similar segments immediately after other 12:00 p.m. newscasts). The segment featured Jessica Taloney, a former news reporter and news presenter for station, talking about Handyman House Tech in Mobile with its founder and owner Vernon Wilson while appearing on the same set the station normally used for producing shorter advertisements for their own programming and for the programming of other local TV stations.

:ack: That writing was beyond terrible. And almost none of that has any basis whatsoever, especially that first one. Williams (I will call him that even though he doesn't want me to) would be shocked to know that this happens everyday at many news affiliates. Besides, his credentials are laughable:

Alvin Williams follows television and radio in Mobile, Alabama for Examiner. Before he joined Examiner, he wrote articles about TV and radio for the Mobile Press-Register and often had them published for their "Letters to the Editor" sections. Later he started a weblog titled Southwest Alabama Television, where he used to post news and observations about local TV stations on a frequent basis and post local TV listings from the past occasionally. In his spare time he loves to draw, read, play golf, and play electronic games.

Yeah, that says a lot right there...

To bring this back on Sinclair more specifically though, check out what WPMI's Christian Jennings tweeted:

2fb4.png

Looks like Sinclair is switching the former Newport stations who were on ENPS to iNews. WOAI, for instance, uses ENPS, while KABB has used iNews for a LONG time. This makes it even easier for them to share stories (I've seen both KABB's and WOAI's setups, they could literally edit each other's rundowns if they wanted to...). Nexstar is another company that standardizes on iNews and both the ex-Newport stations and the soon-to-be-ex Comcorp stations use ENPS as well. I believe Nexstar is also looking into switching the stations using ENPS over. I believe this is necessitated by the fact that both Sinclair and Nexstar cancelled their new acquisitions subscriptions to the AP as a cost-cutting measure (but both subscribe to CNN Newsource if that tells you where their priorities are; KABB's newsroom would literally have a meltdown if they no longer subscribed to CNN since that's where the vast majority of their newscast outside of the first two blocks comes from, and because it's Sinclair, they do it on the cheap, which means no custom liveshots or anything of that nature (costs extra). This is contrast to KSAT who also heavily uses CNN Newsource but does a lot of the custom live hits, etc.).

Anyways, I was told WOAI was switching to iNews this summer so I imagine, based on Jennings' tweet, they will be switching soon or have already switched.

I have no idea what Cox uses (I think they use ENPS) so KOKI/WTEV may not have to worry about switching to something else. It must suck for the staff at the Sinclair/Nexstar stations that currently use ENPS and now they're going to have to learn iNews since iNews seems harder to use than ENPS. I feel for them...

Also, I finally managed to hear WPMI's new VO. The old guy (solidscooter's right, it isn't Leif Anders; they stopped using him aorund 2007) was a lot better than this new guy. He sounds like a computerized narrator more than anything... He's probably one of the guys from promoguys.tv, Sinclair and apparently Media General love them (Greg O'Neill used to be a partner before Fox News came calling...).

One last thing:

They even used Jay in a few commercials (which is a definite NO NO at most stations these days).

Why? Maybe you don't like the fact Jay used to do the "Worldwide Pants" on "The Late Show"...

Yeah, that Examiner blog was a topic of conversation around here a year or two ago. Just going through that thing is painful, I'm sorry that you, yet another human being had to see it.

My apologies for bringing it up too, but every now and then, the blog does have a piece or two of useful information....after wading through all of the commentary and useless stuff. Other than the semi-weekly Lagniappe Newspaper, it's the only media-based website covering Mobile (and Pensacola) since the Press-Register doesn't cover local television anymore.

I happened to find Leif Anders' website....take a listen to his demo reel here...I'm wondering now if the pre-2007 reads are actually him. If so, he has a hell of a range and/or permanently altered his style post-2007.

As for Jay Gardner doing commercials....it can be a problem if you have a promo for the station voiced for him.....followed by a used car commercial voiced by him. Sure, the average viewer isn't going to care about this, but it could risk the station's credibility by having the main "news" voice shilling commercials for random clients. Then again, voice people are voice people. I've heard Richard Malmos do promos for MeTV as well as voicing some infomercials a few years back. Greg O'Neill does the local voiceovers for WALA as well as FOX News...I've heard that some viewers actually confuse one for the other because of this....

...which is why it's smart to have one person ONLY doing news promo voiceovers, and anyone else to do spots or promos...exactly what WPMI and other Sinclair stations have been doing...

...and hot off the presses, Sinclair has just bought Allbritton...and is SELLING stations!

http://www.tvnewscheck.com/article/69268/sinclair-buying-allbritton-stations-for-985m

To quote R.E.M. here ... "It's the end of the world, and I feel fine" ... and WHP is back on the chopping block!!!! Wow.

-- Matt

NO!!!!! DAMNIT!!!!!! NO!!! :bang:

I had that feeling all weekend that today would be the day to hear something about who will get the Allbritton stations. Those devils of Maryland has struck again. Sad Sad Sad!!!! See many have said that they would be aggressive after losing the Local TV to the Trib, and they've seemed to have done that.

But on the article states, that it will provide non-programming services, could this mean that Stealfield, Cunningrab, or that Uncle Tom could get involved with WTTO/WABM, WHP & WMMP? So unless an outsider of Sinclair's proxy network comes forward, we could see a triopoly in Charleston and the I dunno what it's called in Birmingham. WSET will probably connect with WFXR, once they ink a deal to get the Milton Grant stations.

Robert, you should be ashamed for selling the house that your father ol' Joe built to these sorry-ass devils from fifty miles away. I hope that dirty money from those bastards do you well for POLITICO and stuff surrounding that. Do we know if ABC or Disney ever made an offer just to get WJLA? They should've taken a tax liability anyway to let ABC get WJLA. And if ABC never bid, to me Hearst had to been the second contender in the stations, similar to LIN being the second for the Fisher stations.

I hate to say that Sinclair will not only have a station in the nation's capitol, but will be their largest station by market size. Completely Crazy!!! I hope the employees of all those stations get y'all resumes ready.

First KOMO 4 & KATU and now WJLA. A completely dark day in DC. Joe should be rolling in his grave now.

This is some devastating shit. Sad, Sad, Sad!!!

[sinclair] added, however that it expects to provide sales and other non-programming support services to each of those stations [WTTO-WABM, WHP, WMMP] pursuant to customary shared services and joint sales agreements.

So it's Sinclair trying to sell these stations to shell companies. Paging Stephen Mumblow!

It's not WHP back on the chopping block, it's probably WHP going to Deerfield Media and getting consolidated with WHTM.

Edit:

From the press release, we also get an idea of Sinclair's ownership reach. In a world without the UHF discount, this would be pretty much it:

...Sinclair's television group will reach approximately 38.2% (21.9% for purposes of the 39% FCC ownership cap) of U.S. television households...

It appears that Fisher's investors have filed a lawsuit against Fisher, in hopes to block them from selling its kingdom to Sinclair.

Couldn't we get more bad news today?

It appears that Fisher has settled with its shareholders, and next week the Fisher board will vote on the Sinclair acquisition deal.

Two Kingdoms. Swallowed. Thanks to the masterminds of "Massa Devil" David Smith and his devilish clan in Maryland. A Dark Day in DC.

Now that Sinclair has WJLA....what will the new call letters be? WJSS? WDDS? WSIN? WTPA? WGOP? :rofl!:

I highly doubt that the call letters would change to WTPA since those calls are currently being used by a radio station in Central PA. It wouldn't make sense either.

Truly a sad day for the broadcast industry, just hearing about the news makes me wanna vomit.
