Sinclair...Again

Yesterday, I saw the application listing on the FCC site, sometimes when a major deal is approve, there would be a couple of app that don't say GRANTED on all of them on the same day, it would say that on the next day. One of them was WACH, which was posted (11/18/2013). And the other is WWMB (from SagamoreHill to Howard Stirk's) which happened to be granted the greenlight today (11/19/2013). So all the Barrington Apps are now approved, and all they need to do now is to finish it up once and for all.

Also, it looks like Sinclair can relieve themselves from Idaho Falls because the FCC has also greenlighted the KIDK app to VistaWest Media. A separate app with KXPI-LD's have yet to see the greenlight, but I assume that would be forthcoming. So when its all said and done, it will all be NPG Territory.

I know it's not really connected but I've been keeping count of what Sinclair owns in Ohio. I believe they own a station every market in with the exception of Cleveland

With WNWO which I'll openly Sinclair will be a HUGE improvement for them as it is a train wreck as it now.

Columbus: WSYX (ABC) / WTTE (FOX) / WWHO (CW)

Dayton: WKEF (ABC) / WRGT (FOX)

Cincinnati: WKRC (CBS) / WSTR (MNTV)

Steubenville, OH: WTOV (NBC)

Toledo: WNWO (NBC)

I would be crazy enough to say They are building an Ohio News Network

They don't own Youngstown either. And I don't think anyone wants to count little Lima either. And lets not forget the Charleston/Huntington market is in the extreme southeast part of Ohio.

If they would've won the Local TV, LLC deal, they would've made history of being the first and only media group to own stations in all of the 3 Cs of Ohio (Cleveland, Columbus & Cincinnati).

In the case of WNWO, it literally has been the also-ran in Toledo since Don Overmeyer signed it on in 1968. They had some upward momentum in the mid-1990s after taking the NBC affiliation, but that's about it...

I've never been to Toledo (or Ohio in general), but I do go to the Vintage Toldeo TV/Radio page every now and then, which has tons of stations ads from Toledo and Detroit, and judging from old WDHO/WNWO ads, they were a little preemption-happy with the ABC schedule back when they had the affiliation, especially in the 80s. Maybe because you had very strong ABC affiliates in Detroit to the north, Cleveland to the east, and Fort Wayne to the west (although I don't know strong WPTA has been in the ratings historically), they could probably get away with the preemptions. WTOL has already been the 800-pound gorilla in that market, with WTVG always second. It wouldn't surprise me if WNWO gets beat in the ratings against WGTE (PBS) and WUPW (Fox) also.

Speaking of Sinclair and their political agenda, I can see them buying this show next year and placing it up against "Saturday Night Live" in their non-NBC markets.

It'll be closed-captioned AND in HD? Wow, there's some money being spent on this!

if they pick that up here, it will probably air on KMYS during the graveyard slot so not too many will be subjected to it, much the same with ROH and Armstrong Williams' show...

NEW Sinclair M&A Tonight!!!!

Remember when Sinclair announced a couple of weeks ago that they had bought the non-license assets of WPFO in Maine? Look like Sinclair wants to make sure they have it in their fold permanently.

Because Tonight, new paperwork has been posted, and it appears that Anderson wants to secure WPFO's license. Yes, Sinclair is using the Cunningham card. Purchase Price for the license assets, $3.4. This doesn't count the $16.3M of non-license assets it already spent. So Sinclair have spent $19.7M, a few chump change shy of $20M for all assets of WPFO.

Okay I notice something. Why didn't Mumblow wanted this station. After all, it's basically close to his territory. Let's not forget, we learned that "Deerfield" & "Manhan" are names of the rivers which connect to the big Connecticut River, and let's not forget those both rivers are which he owns his farms where he grows his "Tis' The Season" Christmas Trees. But I think that its just a tad bit west of Portland, ME. Ah oh well.

But I do notice somewhat of a trend here. Since Sinclair's 26-month M&A craze, I notice that except for Beaumont, Reno & Rochester (and a proposal in Tallahassee), most of the Deerfield properties will be/already are concentrated within the mid-size markets (Cincinnati, Columbus (Manhan), San Antonio, and the proposed Birmingham & Harrisburg). And notice that some of new proposed Cunningham assign properties (Portland, Traverse City, Johnstown, Tallahassee, Gainesville) are concentrated in the markets #100 and down. I wouldn't too much count the NEPA or the Flint properties because those are like within the sub #75. Which I'm still wonder which stations will be assigned to this new Chesapeake Television subsidiary? Where would the end line would be? Would it be after Dayton or Charleston, WV, or after El Paso or Charleston, SC. It would be interesting to see if they decide on which ones would be in that subsidiary. And which ones who are in dire need of new equipment. Especially for the Barrington stations.

It still doesn't escape the fact that they are still Stealfielding and Cunningrabbing left and right, but I do find it somewhat interesting.

Here's CNYRadio's article on the approval of the Barrington deal. The article also includes a transitional arrangement with Brady & Sinclair.

In a simultaneous deal, Sinclair is selling WSYT to Bristlecone Broadcasting. An asset purchase agreement filed with the FCC says Bristlecone is paying $20 million to pick up the Fox affiliate, along with Sinclair’s long-running shared services agreement with RKM Media for My43 (WNYS). The deal also includes a purchase option on WNYS.

However, a look through the FCC paperwork on the latter sale shows Sinclair will remain in control of the day-to-day operations at WSYT and WNYS for at least six more months. Through a “transition services agreement” filed on the FCC website, Bristlecone will pay Sinclair to handle engineering, programming, traffic, accounting and website/digital services “through and until the 180th day after the Closing Date.”

Further review of the documents on the FCC website seems to indicate that Sinclair is only selling the “assets” of WSYT to Bristlecone. Sinclair will continue to own the 1000 James Street building which houses WSYT and WNYS, as well as the Otisco transmitter site from which WSYT’s signal originates. Sinclair will lease both the studio/office space and the transmitter site space to Bristlecone. Both agreements call for an initial term of 10 years, with an option to renew for two additional five year terms thereafter.

At the end of the day, Sinclair will satisfy FCC requirements by removing its name from the WSYT broadcast license, but it appears the company is keeping itself in a position to continue generating revenue from WSYT and WNYS by providing services for and acting as a landlord to Bristlecone Broadcasting. (And we can’t help but wonder if this could eventually lead to a repeat of what happened in 2009, when WTVH moved its assets into the WSTM building.)

Geez, I think some of the crappy local paid advertisements that KDNL airs on the weekend have better production values than this.

I thought that "The Right Side With Armstrong Williams" had cable access quality production values. That's why so many of Sinclair's stations put it on Sunday mornings at 2:30 AM, despite it being a mandated show. "The Flipside" is a little better than "The Right Side," and fits SBG's political bent, so it may just be put at a better time on their stations.

Pilots are always pretty low-cost. They may put some money into the actual show if it has some demand. Besides, many Sinclair stations air those awful Byron Allen pseudo-court shows which have bad acting, graphics, etc. and put them right next to shows that are produced more professionally (like "The People's Court").

TVNewsCheck has introduced a Station Group of the Year award for 2014, and surprise, surprise, their very first one is going to SBG!

Executive editor Harry Jessell couldn't have said it better: "Over the past year, no group has had a greater impact on the business than Sinclair."

TVNewsCheck announced today that they named Sinclair "Station Group of the Year." They claim that SBG has "deep faith in broadcasting" and also praises their involvement in developing a new over-the-air broadcast standard.

You beat me to it, Raymie!

haha, KCWX airs those here. They get a .5-ish rating here. Nobody watches them. They're not even real court shows, they're scripted and that Kevin Ross guy was removed from the bench meaning he can no longer be a judge in California. pathetic...

Okay, does anyone think it's possible that Sinclair's philosophy has something to do with this?

You can't help but think that being owned by Sinclair has a part in that. A lot of these station groups are pushing people to use Twitter and Facebook to interact with their viewers and I wouldn't be shocked if Sinclair is prodding these stations to ask political questions like that.

And as someone pointed out on the comments there, if it was asked in a more neutral fashion, then we probably wouldn't even be talking about it.

Update on the Sinclair-KRNV (Reno) situation

When do you guys think KRXI will drop the KTVU simulcast and go to a KRNV-produced newscast. That just seems inevitable now.

Looks like that's not the only example from KATU after seeing this Facebook post on their page:

"Was watching news when your asked if Obama snubbed Lincoln because he couldn't get to Gettysburg today. What a stupid thing to say! He didn't 'snub Lincoln'. What's happened to KATU? That remark led me to switch channels."

You'd think Sinclair would want to tone down the Republican political baiting like this in a market as liberal as Portland.

They'll be a distant third place (or fourth place) station if they keep that up. I am sure those at KGW and KOIN are watching closely and probably happy about it...

Maybe KATU's new strategy is to focus on the "redder" portions of the market (read: outside Portland City Limits).
