ToriElectra 292
Man, this is one of the weirdest things I've ever seen happen. That intern must've been either bitter or prank-happy. (Or drunk.) skbl17 188
That was probably the most professional apology I've ever seen on a newscast. KTVU took full responsibility and maintained that it was their fault, while the NTSB statement was read on air saying that it was an intern who "confirmed" the names to the station. Kudos to KTVU! That being said, someone is definitely getting fired. tw-804 192
Someone put this on KTVU's Wikipedia page... UPDATE (3:21p/ET): It's now removed. They are known to be the most racial profiling station of the San Francisco Bay Area. One such example that happened on July 12, 2012 was a full mockery of the accident of Asian Airlines crashed plane. They unprofessionally and immaturely stated that the names of the pilots consist of "Sum Ting Wong" and "Ho Lee Fuk", to mention a few. KTVU has issued an apology blaming one single female intern for the wrong names that were stated to have been confirmed before release. However the clearly racist commentary are leading to heavy questions on the legitimacy of this station. That being said, someone is definitely getting fired. The part that really struck me is that they read that entire NTSB statement, where NTSB takes blame... and then they went on to say "yeah, the NTSB was at fault, but at the end of the day, this is on us, and we screwed up." That is how you handle it. You don't pass the buck, you take the blame and move on. KTVU managed to turn a huge embarrassment into a moment of grace for them. Mrtraveler01 738
Asiana Airlines is now officially suing KTVU. "This legal action is being taken because of the KTVU report that not only disparaged Asians in general through the use of racially charged epithets, but also severely damaged the reputation of Asiana Airlines," the company said in a statement. I figured the plane crash committed by a rookie pilot under your own airline would've damaged the reputation of Asiana Airlines more than some goof made by KTVU. Talk about a sad attempt to cover your own ass. Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/12768-ktvu-epic-graphics-fail/page/2/#findComment-85577 Share on other sites

My thoughts exactly - your reputation dropped precipitously when your plane had the accident - be it a rookie pilot or an experienced one. Does anybody remember "ValuJet"? The name didn't last past the ValuJet 592 crash, but the airline lives on as AirTran - but is merging with good ol' Southwest.... J The irony of it is that Airtran itself frowns upon any mention of ValuJet, as they've chosen to distance themselves from that dark chapter in their history, which is now flying itself into the sunset. In terms of Asiana, rather than just filing a frivolous lawsuit over an error KTVU admitted to making in that story and apologized for, they should take a look at their own piloting practices and policies first (like why they even allowed a pilot with only two weeks experience with that particular aircraft to fly it in the first place). skbl17 188
Plus, if they're suing KTVU, why can't they also include the NTSB as a defendant in the lawsuit? It was one of their interns who "confirmed" the names to KTVU after all... This entire lawsuit is just BS. If anything, KTVU has actually improved in regards to this goof: they made a mistake that wasn't necessarily their fault in the first place, made numerous apologies (including the professionally-handled one on air by Frank Somerville,) and even had the letter from the NTSB that basically says, "okay, a summer intern of ours screwed up, and it was wrong...". They (KTVU) took full responsibility for something that wasn't actually their fault and then apologized for it! What happens? Asiana sues KTVU, despite the fact that they did not earn a lawsuit, especially from Asiana! Reputation? Ha! Whatever reputation they had in the U.S. plummeted after the crash which started this whole NTSB/KTVU/Asiana clusterf**k to begin with! When I book a flight on an airline, the safety record of the airline is important, not some news station who accidentally aired offensive "names". KTVU, or any other station for that matter, has little to do with the reputation of the airline. Boy, if Asiana wants to have a good reputation, more rigorous quality checks of any potential pilots are needed, not a lawsuit against a local television station! mike91 67
It looks as if Asiana has come to their senses and decided not to sue KTVU http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/17/travel/asiana-offensive-names/index.html Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/12768-ktvu-epic-graphics-fail/page/2/#findComment-85668 Share on other sites
sanewsguy 511
The South Korean air carrier said that KTVU-TV has already apologized for using fake names for four pilots on a plane that crashed in San Francisco on July 6. It will no longer sue, as it had said it would do. No sh*t. Asiana didn't know that when they announced they would sue. This was nothing more than an attention-grabber for Asiana...
