They could open things back up again (which wouldn’t be a bad idea), so I wouldn’t bet against that being a possibility. Just have to look for tell-tale signs in the newsroom (new paint, etc..) to see ‘if’ that’s the plan. Jase 1047
Guessing game is over... They’re back in place. No major work done other than replacing the previous video wall/panels with a larger, seamless video screen. Nothing more. Still using old desk and live video camera feed (which has always looked bad). NBC must of bought in bulk. Stations are getting these midlife refreshes. Some vary from small walls like at WRC and in the Wx center at WTVJ to huge installations at KXAS where they got a large wall behind the desk and a larger one on one wall (that didn’t have any displays). Some stations use a reporter hired by the helicopter company and some outsource morning traffic helicopter reports to a third party who may have their own bird. Was Mike Lorber on all day or just one daypart? The helicopter inn their promos N5QY is registered to Hellinc - Helicopters Inc of Linden, NJ. Edit: Looks like Lorber flew in the Sky 5 seen in promos. 24994J 5577
A few months after the fact, but I know this is the first time I've seen the full expanse (and bottom) of the new video wall. I'm no expert, but it seems unnecessarily huge. Considering how they use it, does it have to be so tall and wide, or does it just come that way? The black on top and bottom makes it look almost temporary, disjointed from the rest of the set. lexisutter_58594286_408679286347627_6082097823950674866_n.mp4 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/13034-random-wmaq-thread/page/26/#findComment-225203 Share on other sites
Jase 1047
I don't think whatever type of video screen/wall that is that its the correct (or ideal) type they should be using in that space/for that purpose. Yes, it's way too big and they shouldn't have any lights shining directly on it. They would have been better off gutting the space and building a new set period. rkolsen 1684
I’m guessing they probably wanted to keep a 16:9 aspect ratio and a smaller version would not fill the area the previous monitors filled. Weeters 1916
A smaller wall with carpentry around it to make it blend into the set the way the old "window wall" did probably would have cost just as much as this massive wall. LED tiles are only getting cheaper, and labor to design and build set pieces (especially in Chicago) is not. 1 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/13034-random-wmaq-thread/page/26/#findComment-225302 Share on other sites

Weeters 1916
It's not exactly a law, but if you have a contract with labor unions and you try to go outside of the proper union to get work done, you're might end up with most (if not all) of your union employees not at their desks, picketing outside. NABET has a national contract with NBCU that covers a lot of engineering/production/technical jobs. However you also have IATSE's various chapters doing various things across the country. You might have a NABET camera operator and a IATSE lighting technician and a carpenter from a completely different IATSE chapter that's focused on scenic. Chicago has at least 8 separate IATSE chapters (Locals 2, 110, 476, 750, 762, 769, 780, and B46.) 2 Link to comment https://localnewstalk.net/topic/13034-random-wmaq-thread/page/26/#findComment-225344 Share on other sites

DGA (Director's Guild of America) is another one that represents control room directors at top market stations and at the network level too. And while it's not broadcast specific, a handful of stations' employees are represented by IBEW, too.
