wabceyewitness 822
Following the lead of parent networks ABC and Univision, San Francisco's ABC-owned station KGO-TV and Univision-owned station KDTV have announced a partnership to collaborate on news reporting, share content and promote each other's newscasts. http://www.mediabistro.com/tvspy/kgo-announces-partnership-with-univision-station_b126116 I hope this is successful and expands to other markets like New York City where ABC and Univision both have very successful stations that can help each other grow and serve their audiences. 24994J 5585
I never saw an announcement, but WLS and WGBO have been running promos crosspromoting each other for a few months now, though for nothing more than debates have their resources pooled together. It's increasingly apparent how Univision and ABC are getting closer as companies. Prior to San Francisco a similar agreement was made in Philadelphia between WPVI and WUVP. On top of these local agreements there's also the Fusion cable channel which the two jointly operate. SFTV 527
Maybe the ABC O&O's will have a sharing agreement? Who knows, ABC and Univision will merge in the future? NBC and Telemundo seem to do well. Thundershock MN 169
When the partnership in Philadelphia was announced the Univision press release stated "The partnership is an expansion of Univision’s ongoing efforts with ABC to share news content, already underway in two of the largest Hispanic markets such as New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. In some markets both stations work on investigative stories while in others they work on a daily basis on news stories and on gubernatorial debates." So, it's not shocking that the partnership has advanced to San Francisco. So, I think it goes without saying that KTRK and KXLN...You're next. A couple random thoughts: 1. I think this is another sign of the belt tightening at the ABC O&O's. I'm not sure how deep the partnership goes in each market. But, they are entering into "news/content sharing agreements" and "helicopter shares" with Univision stations in some of these markets. So, they can now share the routine footage and chopper video. Not sure if this is all cleaning up the books for sale prep or, just ABC getting with the times and getting "lean and mean." Regardless of the intentions this has to kind of be a dramatic shift for those at the ABC O&O's. A lot of the things they have resisted over the years that other station groups gradually adopted (ie:hubs, content sharing, automation, etc.) are now hitting them all at once. 2. How do you cross-promote local Univision and ABC newscasts? I understand how NBC and Telemundo can do it as they are co-owned so, it's all "in-house". But, how could you do it in the case of Univision and ABC? It's increasingly apparent how Univision and ABC are getting closer as companies. Prior to San Francisco a similar agreement was made in Philadelphia between WPVI and WUVP. On top of these local agreements there's also the Fusion cable channel which the two jointly operate. Maybe the ABC O&O's will have a sharing agreement? Who knows, ABC and Univision will merge in the future? NBC and Telemundo seem to do well. I stand behind the theory I posted a couple months ago on what I think might happen given ABC & Univision's cozy relationship. Rusty Muck 4378
Maybe the ABC O&O's will have a sharing agreement? Who knows, ABC and Univision will merge in the future? NBC and Telemundo seem to do well. Which would mean that KRON is merely acting as a benchwarmer by renting space at the KGO building while their new facilities are built. A few weeks ago, there was talk of CBS and TimeWarner buying Univision. And that's all it was... talk. The overlap by CBS and Univision's radio divisions alone would make that impossible to commence. All ABC/Disney has in their radio portfolio (since the 2006 divesture of ESPN Radio) are the O&Os for ESPN Radio and Radio Disney, so it would be close to a clean, if not an outright clean, merger. NEOMatrix 1299
I think that Disney is having ABC team up with Univision because maybe they're planning a sale of ABC to Univision. Granted, Univision has Univision/UniMas duopolies and some of the ABC/Univision duopolies might not be allowed (*cough Raleigh cough*) but I think Disney might be testing the water with all these sharing agreements for a sale. A3N 1002
Univision is under a big load of debt ($20 billion if im not mistaken). I doubt that they will be able to afford to buy ABC. The partnership between both companies like Thundershock MN points out, is nothing more than a cost-cutting move- by both companies.
